UC Davis c/o 2016 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I find it oddly calming to know a decision has been made. I'd like to know what it is, but I feel like I have waited months so a few more days isn't anything. Goodluck everyone...Hopefully they let us know closer to the 21st than the 26th :xf:

I think we will all find out different days between those two dates.

Does anyone have any experience with obtaining California residency for tuition purposes for the after the first year if you are coming from out of state? I've done some reading about it, but I've found some caveats to the rules that worry me. I just want to know if it is possible to establish intent and everything needed in the first year while attending vet school. I would definitely change all my licenses and registrations immediately to show intent, but if I am only in California for vet school is that a problem? Thanks.

Is it okay if I just cry forever if I don't get in? Or even if I do get in really... SO MANY EMOTIONS.

I don't know too much since I'm a CA resident, but I think I heard from someone that it's not too hard to get residency. I think someone said you can do it after the 1st year? Hopefully a current student can weigh in, if no one does feel free to PM me and I'll look into it since I'm still up in Davis right now 🙂

I'm originally from Washington and originally it only took one year but four years ago they moved it to three years of working and filing as independent etc. etc. before I was granted residency. So it took me three years to get California residency and it was a super frustrating process. I don't know if its different per school though? Maybe Davis is more forthcoming with instate tuition? I dunno

Erf, I'm pretty sure that it is not 3 years anywhere in the UC system. Sounds hella frustrating though...

Yeah I was working through cal poly so hopefully it isnt like that elsewhere!

I believe it is quite difficult to prove that your intent is not to be in CA just for school. They want proof that you stayed in CA during the breaks, have employment in CA, and that you didn't just move here for school. I have a friend at a different UC school that transferred from a CA community college, but was not granted residency until her second year. She had lived here for more than a year, but was still considered a dependent by UC standards. That was undergrad, I assume it's close to the same for professional schools. Here is the website for residency requirements at Davis.

as far as i know, they say it's worth 20%, but honestly, it doesn't really seem to be a strict ranking scheme. the admissions committee members meet and discuss the interviewed applicants, and recommend a class for admission. i'm not really sure it's by numerical ranking or anything at that point.

Do you think that all interviewees are on the equal footing when they walk into the interview room? Or will perceptions of the interview just be amalgamated with a pre-existing application value derived from GPA's, letters of rec, tests, personal statements, experience, etc.?

Just getting a little anxious here... :scared:

Have wondered this for every school... "crapshoot" always comes into play with these answers it seems. Sad truth is probably a little bit that we aren't all even. Great interviewees get rejected every year!

I think the latter is the case, but since it's an open file interview the interview should really integrate with the rest of the application in some sense anyway. My advisor (who was on the adcom previously) said that there tend to be a handful of people who will probably get in as long as they don't absolutely tank the interview, and a handful of people who will need to plead their case a little more on interview than others, but that generally for the vast majority of interviewees the interview (with all its contexts) will basically be the major thing evaluated.

Sounds about right. Especially considering how large of a cut getting to the interview itself involves. The 220 or so that they invite out of over 1100 should not possess too much disparity in statistics, I would imagine. Minus, of course, the 18-yr old child prodigy with the 4.0 and 1600 GRE as well as those like mooshagen who got invited up out of sheer curiosity and pity.

Thanks for the info about residency issues, everyone. I know I won't have a dependency problem because I'll be 24 years old, but establishing intent may cause a problem which has been pointed out. I guess I have keep looking for more specific information.

Have you tried calling the school?

WHAT! Kind of how I feel about it sometimes... hahaha

Sorry. I had to make an example of someone. Your fake email post put you in my crosshairs. 😉

Just 1 or 2 or 5 or 7 or 10 more days guys!!! 😱

Have you tried calling the school?

I think I am going to do that once they send out the financial aid information and finish sending out admission decisions if I can't find a good answer before then.

I've refrained from posting this until now because I figured it would only fuel everyone's anxiety, but yesterday, I got a call from Dean Lairmore who told me I had gotten in. I don't know anything about the timeline, and I have not received any email/written notice from the school. I'm OOS, so I'm trying to figure out the tuition thing so I can make a decision. Davis is awesome, though!

Y'all freakin me out.

:meanie:

agreed, I think it's time I swear off this thread until I get an e-mail. I don't want to freak out when the first person (actually 😡) gets an e-mail and I'm stuck here twiddling my thumbs :scared:

Congrats Scotch!!! I was not an OOS student, but FWIW it seems like all of my classmates who were OOS were able to secure in state tuition after the first year without any difficulty. I know you will be limited in the amount of time you can spend away from CA your first year, but other than that I don't think there is much to it. But like I said, I didn't go through the process myself. If you would like, PM me your email address and I can ask a former OOS student in my class to email you about the process 🙂

It was explained that Davis was planning to look at OOS applicants more competitively, but personal phonecalls from the dean??!! 😱 Can anyone comment on whether this is normal, exceptional or new?

Oh, and yes, congrats on the acceptance. 🙂

Well, we have a new Dean, so the practice seems to be newly instated with him. I know other vet schools call accepted students, but I think this is a first from UC Davis.

Thanks! It is refreshing to hear that your classmates didn't have too much trouble because the more I looked into it the more doubtful I became. It would be awesome to talk to someone who went through the process too! I'll PM you.

Where's heylodeb on this?? She's the liason!!! Isn't she supposed to be on top of this kinda stuff? Great... now I'll have to anxiously anticipate all phone calls in addition to e-mails. 😀

Honestly, while it is now obviously not outside the realm of possibility, I would expect in-state students to just get the regular old email. The Dean is probably trying to "woo" OOS students into coming - and a phone call certainly does make an acceptance all the more special. Sorry, but my guess is no special treatment for you

 I don't care if one of the custodians posts my acceptance to my facebook page. Just get 'er done!!

Sorry guys, I don't know anything about phone calls.....

Scotch- unless if is different for OOS'ers, you will not receive a financial aid package from Davis before April 15th....(at least my class didn't)

Bah!!! I'm now in the middle of Georgia, freaking out. I have a 9 hr layover in Orlando (don't ask). Im hoping for the ol' email bc I'm gonna sound like a zombie tomorrow.

Hah! So I did ask "Finish?!" for good reason!

And I'm with August. Have some faculty's KID call me and tell me I'm in. I don't care! Haha.

I managed residency in a year as an undergrad at UC... Hit up the admin people, they can help you through a lot of red tape. I got a job a cal license and a permanent address prior to the school year beginning and filed CA taxes for 2005 as a result. By fall '06 I was in-state.

Wow, congratulations!!!

I am literally sitting at my computer eating cake batter right now. THAT'S how stressed I am.

What other school(s) are you considering??

Oh, and good job throwing dozens of Davis applicants into throes of anticipation. 😉
