UC Davis c/o 2024 (hopefully)

We'll try to stay calm. Approximately 67% of people who interview get invites to attend. The interviews sole purpose is to see how you fair under pressure. Just be able to have a conversation, that's not that difficult right? So take some deep breaths and remember, you've already qualified academically. This is just telling them you can communicate and are a generally good person. You got this

One of my friends went yesterday and she said she was extremely nervous and totally, and I quote, “blew it” because she was “a mess” in her interviews, is that the kind of thing they are looking to weed out? And if so how can we avoid that for those of us who haven’t gone?

A low of people feel that way after they exit the interviews, tell your friend not to worry. All you can do is take a few deep breaths and remember even if you "blow it" for one section, there are plenty more and you can more than make up for one bad score so push it out of your mind. They're not trying to weed anyone out at this point. You've all proven you are academically competent! Remember 67% on average are offered admission. They want people who can communicate under pressure because being a vet can be very stressful and communication is key. Everyone just does their best and sometimes you feel like you could've done better but maybe you really did extremely well. There's no way to tell. Maybe you rocked it but are not offered admissions because the people that are also interviewing also rocked it. It's extremely variable and highly dependent on the others interviewing.

tl;dr Be yourself, try not to stress, and remember to breath

Thank you! She said she blew it on pretty much most of it so I am just trying to figure out how I can fix my mindset and relax myself beforehand so I don't spaz out...

Just wanted to post that today we were told that we will hear about admissions decisions in late January, which is a wee bit later than last year. This wait is going to kill me!

My understanding was just that we would have a decision by late January. Which I believe has generally been their timeline, with the admission offers sent out first in early-mid January and rejections posted after?

The official line is that you'll have offers by the end of January. Our hope is they come sooner. That's all we're allowed to say 😉

I was just feeling hopeful since last year they found out Jan. 9th!

I interviewed with the school yesterday, and @Coopah's advice really helped me - take deep breaths and just show them who you are! I thought some of the rounds were actually interesting and fun (and so did the other interviewees in my group 😉). I'm sure MOST of the people there will be as nervous as you are. I definitely was, and the thought of talking to 10 different people for 7 minutes was scary at first, but I ended up liking the idea. I've interviewed with three schools so far, and UC Davis was the most enjoyable tbh. Sleep well and be confident!

Does anyone know approximately how many applicants were interviewed so far?

How many hours do people typically prepare for MMI interviews? and what is the best strategy to prepare?

Personally, I can’t study. It heightens my anxiety and makes me focus on things I’ve memorized or reviewed (if a Q comes up similar). I just do better being myself and slowing down!
But like coopah said, to each their own! Whatever works best for you. 🙂

Okay I haven't actually gone yet so excuse me if this is answered when we are at the interviews, but after talking to some people I was wondering if anyone knows why it takes until the end of January to release their decisions? From my understanding we are ranked based on our interview score, which would be done much sooner! Any insight would be great, thank you!

Well there's the holidays, and it does take some time. Then they have to decide how many they're inviting. I know you want to know ASAP but try to be patient 🙂

Okay that makes sense! Thank you.

Do you know if Davis accepts more than 150 students in anticipation of some people declining their offer, or do they only accept exactly the desired class size and then pull people from the waitlist one by one as offers are declined?

Still driving... interview tomorrow morning. ETA 1 hour. (Phew!)

They typically over accept some, but usually a decent amount comes off the wait list as well. One of my best friends here was accepted off the wait list (she's also one of the best performers in the class). No one will know unless you tell them.

Does anyone know if Apple Watches are allowed to wear during the interview (on theater mode)? It’s easier for me to track the time on there vs. my analog watch, but I also wouldn’t want to get in trouble for the messaging features!

Smart watches are allowed, but they ask you to silence them so your watch doesn't create noises that can be distracting to other applicants.
I wore my Apple watch and put it in night mode (the purple moon button). Also, your phone will be put away in a room that's faaaaaar from the interview rooms, so your watch will probably be disconnected from the outside world 😵 , meaning no weird notifications coming through!

Hey everyone, I'm interviewing during tomorrow's 8:15 time slot (round 2 interview after being denied last year), I'm excited to meet everyone! I definitely remember being nervous last year up until I read the first prompt, after that you just get in the zone! Everybody is nervous, and my interview group last year was super positive and supportive. We're all in the same boat, and it's better to think of other interviewees as future classmates, not competitors 🙂

See y'all tomorrow 😎

Ahhh well I’ve finished my MMI - I feel pretty awful about 6 of the 10 stations 🙁 I feel like I nervously rambled in-cohesively on too many stations lol .. well.. all there is to do now is wait.

Don't worry! A lot of people feel that way. Most of those people still got in! I'll be routing for you.

Just a random thought that I had. Maybe a reason why they let us know by the end of January and not sooner is that the MMI scoring isn't as black and white as we thought. Is the candidate who scored the highest score of 140 more qualified and likely to be a better veterinarian than someone who scored a 130? Maybe the scoring system for a particular station is actually scored higher than another station (kinda like a blind system)? Idk. Point is is that we all tried to do our best and all we can do now is move forward. I really hope we get in, but we should still be proud of this milestone, like how the administrators said during their presentation 🙂

The reason why it takes so long is because they have a statistician take a look at all the raw scores and ensure it was fair. Were there any slight differences in each persons experience? Did the order you go in affect anything? They take *everything* into account and the math for that takes at least a month sometimes more. Everyone gets adjusted scores by the end of it, and that makes this process much more fair. No one gets an advantage based on which circuit they do that way.

There’s a secret to the madness Trust the process. We’re just waiting because Davis is ensuring everyone received an equal evaluation!

Oh thank goodness, I was pretty worried about that! There are certainly stations I would have rather have started at and was hoping that they would recognize that kind of thing, thank you for sharing!!!

While this sounds promising, they are going to have to adjust me quite a lot of points to put me in the running, I think lol!

That sounds nice! Where did you hear it from?

does anyone know about how many people are offered admission and how many are put on the waitlist?

I think historically about 67% were offered admissions. That includes people on the wait list.

I thought I saw a couple recent years where the percentage of interviewed people offered admission was a lot higher like 0.75 and even almost 0.8? For the class of 2022 183 people were offered admission out of 239, and for the class of 2023 191 were offered admission (out of I'm assuming ~240). I'm not sure if the classes of 2022 and 2023 are outliers though. I did see that the classes of 2020 and 2019 offered admission to 161, out of I'm assuming ~240 people, which would be about 67%.

ahahaha I've been obsessing about this and trying to find ways to make the long wait not so stressful! xP I've not been able to find other years.

On average about 67% there have definitely been years that are more or less. Depends on the year.

same! lol

Does anyone know if we are required to submit Fall grades?

They probably won't require your fall grades, at least they didn't for my class (2023). They will require your final transcript though along with proof of your degree.

Good luck everyone! Most likely decisions will be released in the coming week or two (historically speaking).
