she is really reluctant at first to give it over the phone, but I pleaded with her because I do have a lot of decisions to make within these few days, such as paying fees for some community classes and replying to some other medical schools. So that's why she let it through and tell me the truth. Man...I so wish it's not real....= (

Infiniti- Just curious how you were able to check up on yours...Do you have to call the office, or is it through URSA or something like that? So I take it the tough decision is really coming down to finaid packages for you...that's pretty intense man. Best of luck with choosing...I hope LA gives you a good package to make the choice easier!

I don't blame you for being skeptical, but why would anyone make up news about getting rejected from their top choice school. As for your question, I have a special talent for getting people to talk, I think it will be one of my better assets as a physician. I have been trying to teach my girlfriend how to do the same, all you have to do is realize that the people in admissions office are people, and anytime you deal with people, regardless of who they are, any rule can be bent or broken and nothing is final. I knew the rules of non-disclosure when I called, and I explained that to her, but I also told her that it was my top choice school and that I just couldn't wait anymore to hear the answer. Sorry for the rant, but you were the skeptical one.

I got a financial aid estimate last week (it was only a need-based estimate, and it was pretty good). They are definitely only giving these estimates, and I think the maximum for need-based is half-off tuition. The merit awards are very limited, and do not go out until May.

i know there was discussion on this earlier, but can someone clear up the difference between the two waitlists, if in fact there is one?

is it better to be on one than the other? which waitlist would they use first to pull applicants from?

Yeah man! I called the office and spoke to a counselor. I think her name is Gloria. She does need analysis for incoming students.

I spoke to admissions a couple of weeks ago and she said that it just depends on how things move after May 15th. She told me that there have been years where they went "deep into the HOLD list." However, there are those years where they don't get nearly that far.

There are two lists and both are unranked. One is the more desirable "waitlist" and the other is the dreaded "HOLD" list. It seems logical that to get to the hold list they would have to go through the entire waitlist but I am not sure. All I know is that I am on the HOLD list and I sure as hell would prefer to be on the waitlist.

The class size is 169, including 24 in Drew and 24 in the UCR program. So, 121 are in the "regular" UCLA program. The 2005 US news book says that 238 were accepted to fill the class.

On the other extreme, they could have accepted the full 239 up front, in which case it dropped down to 169 as some people declined their acceptances...leaving zero spots for people off the waitlist. If they pull someone off the waitlist, this goes into the accepted count (An acceptance offer whether the applicant declines or accepts counts as an acceptance). Ucla accepts perhaps a little over the minimun for the ucla program. The waitlist/hold list runs between 100-200 students. Between 50-75 students can decline the initial acceptance which would leave like 60 students officially in the class then they would draw like 50 or so students from the waitlist to fill the class.

To add to the confusion: UCLA has 169 MS1 students but they can be divided into groups in terms of acceptances:
----24 UCR students who spend first two years at UCR and clinical years at UCLA and are in an entirely different applicant pool.
----24 Drew medical students who are with Geffen students during first two years but not during clinical and are selected by the Drew staff with the approval of UCLA SOM.
-----12 MD/PhD students at Geffen
---- 109 MS1 Geffen UCLA MS1 students who are what this thread is all about.

I think it makes it impossible to guess how many this or that since the numbers in the US News book do not differentiate between these groups of accepted students. For example, I don't know if any UCR kids come off the waitlist or how they are dealt with in the statistics. The same with the Charles Drew students; and the MD PhD have their own application process as well. The only way to really know the stats, is to ask someone in the admissions office. And I think that they should give out the information, it helps everyone figure out what to do with one's life. Medical school starts in less than 4 months!!! and some students have to move whole families!!!!

It's all a mute point unless you actually find out how many they accepted up front. Anything else is pure speculation. All you can say for sure is that somewhere between 0 and 69 people came off the waitlist, with the actual # probably not being either of those two extremes.

Oh and I forgot to point out earlier...DrBoris calculated awhile ago that the class of straight Geffen MDs is 109 if you exclude the 12 MSTP spots.

Why would it add to the accepted count if, in Bluntman's dark world, no one got off the waitlist? They could accept 239 right off the bat and that would be their total accepted count. How do you come up with the minimum 60 off the waitlist?

Most schools (even top tier ones like UCLA 😀) have to accept around 2x as many people as there are spots simply because the people that get accepted there likely have several other great offers.

So if you do a little math and happen to have the US News and MSAR you can multiply the acceptance rate in US NEWS 4.5% times the total # of applicants in the MSAR (7018) and get a total of around 316 acceptances given. 316 is a much more reasonable number and i'm sure that includes waitlist acceptanes, and is for all the different programs. If UCLA knows what they are doing they will probably initially accept around 250, then start taking people from various waitlists. Hope that helps, and Good Luck you Waitlisters 👍

My 2006 subscription has expired, but I think you have to click on an individual school and then click on the Admissions tab in order to see the applicants/interviews/accepted/enrolled breakdown. It's in there somewhere tho.

The number is from the 2005 US News book --- 238 accepted to fill 121 spots. It's not such an absurd number. According to the same book, UCSF takes 226 to fill 141 spots and UCSD takes 274 to fill 121 spots.

MDhopeful, the 238 does include people who have been waitlisted.
