UGA c/o 2017 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've heard that it was 2, but since they are increasing enrollment to 150, it may start to be more.

They aren't increasing it until the new hospital is built. I'd say that would be in about 2 years?

Ahh maybe I misread it. I thought I had read that they were going to increase it the same year they broke ground on it. Maybe not though!

The problem is that there's not enough room for more people. Especially that many more. The hospital isn't very big and there's no room for expansion. That's why they get the new hospital.

So I emailed admissions about a time line and they said they would inform people early march

Has anyone had their residency status updated? Mine is still blank and its worrying me!

Mine is still blank although I've been accepted, so don't worry about it. Good luck, hope everyone will hear good news soon!

Huh, UGA called me today.

Got left a message saying they had an update about my application status when I was in class. Called back and was told they would form the class by the 22nd and inform applicants shortly after via snail mail.

Went into this not expecting much as an at large applicant but maybe there is a chance since they took the time to call me; I know at least one of my LORs got called as well.

Go figure. Well there you have it, pretty much what we already knew. Good luck peeps.

So UGA called you and told you that you would get a letter in the mail after the 22nd and that's it?? Did you give them any reason to call you or anything?

Yeah you pretty much described it.. And then he asked me if I was still in Texas...and that was pretty much it.

Weird, eh? And no, it was completely unprompted. I didn't do anything unusual, just submitted my application like everyone else.

I didn't want to be rude so I refrained from questioning, but I really wasn't sure what the point of it was.

Just a heads up:

Called UGA yesterday and they informed me that they still have one more meeting on the 21st to finalize decisions, and letters will follow on the 22nd and after.

Also, does anyone know if they always call an eLOR?

No they do not always call your references. I met with a vet on the selection committee last year to get advice and he said if you are a repeat applicant and they want you or if they really like you they might not call. They call to confirm things/hours/experience/attitude and to help them decide between applicants. But if your eLORs don't get called you can still get in! Don't worry!

Did they specify if they were sending out just letters or will emails be sent out also?
Thanks!

I'm sorry, he didn't say anything about emails. He just mentioned letters. 🙁

I'm an OOS applicant, so I'm not expecting much (but hoping everyone else felt that way and just didn't apply 😛!) but it is frustrating having not heard one peep from the school.

One of my references got a call today! She said she was asked more questions, more in-depth, more details than last year. Hopefully this is a good thing?

sounds like a good thing ouijetaime. hoping you get in!!! :luck::luck:

Ehrmehgerd they have now called two of my references that I know of. Is that good or bad?!?!

Me too. I think it's only good in the sense that it's not bad. They haven't thrown our applications away yet but it doesn't mean we'll get in. People have gotten in without reference calls and vice versa. Can't wait til March...come on!

Does anyone know how many IS students applied this year?

I heard there was close to 1200 applicants this year from a Vet whom spoke to us at our school last weekend, Im sure a majority of those are IS students!

I know at other schools, for example Auburn, the vast majority of applicants are out of state. Why do you think for UGA the majority are IS?

UGA takes a minuscule number of OOS students, so I suppose many don't consider it worth the money and time?

Just my guess. I'm IS.

I'm in state as well, I've just noticed that the other schools only average around 100 in state applicants. So I was just curious why so many Georgia residents apply.

What stats have you been looking at? I'd be very surprised if only 100 people applied to vet school. Even IS. 😕

Here is the information Auburn puts on their website: http://www.vetmed.auburn.edu/home/eaducation/admissions/summary-and-stats

And while I was at Mississippi State, they were interview around 320 OOS applicants, and only had around 75 IS applicants.

I'm pretty sure that MSU said that they interview around 300 applicants total.

Also, my rejection from Auburn went something like this:

"we accept only forty students in each class who are not residents of Alabama or contract states. This year we had 902 applicants for those 40 positions."

Hm. UGA has stats on their website for the class of 2015 and 2014 application data. Each of those years they had around 550 applicants total (and more at large than IS, and that doesn't include contract states). I know numbers of applicants have been going up across the board, but such a large difference occurring in only a couple of years seems unlikely to me.

Isn't UGA one of those schools that used to require the biology GRE subject test, but doesn't anymore? Could explain part of a larger than normal increase in applications (though not necessarily all of it?).

It is.

I was just about to respond with this same thing!!

I agree, but this was from the mouth of a large animal vet who does a lot of close work with the university vets at UGA. He came to speak with out Veterinary club at our school and said he got those numbers directly from his friend whom sits on the admissions committee. I highly doubt either him nor his contact would have exaggerated that extremely...

But I also don't think that the state of Georgia fosters nearly 8 times as many hopeful veterinarians than other states. I don't know. I guess I'm just hoping there aren't that many IS applicants to better my chances!

Yes, I agree, Which school have such low applicant numbers?! Id love to apply there if I don't in get this cycle!! haha

Yes, I agree, Im hoping the numbers are slightly exaggerated for all of our sake! But at the same time I know of at least 10 people who have applied that are in state this year just from my university. About half of these are doing vet school as a 'back up' plan if they dont get into med school....I know of a few people like this who were accepted last year to UGA, but not to the med schools they applied and went ahead and entered the DVM program solely so they could be in professional school. Based on the current job market and the influx of people wanting to stay in school or continue on to grad school/professional school simply to stay in school rather than enter the real world jobless after graduation, I wouldn't be surprised if there were a lot of applicants this year doing the same thing. It sucks to have to compete against applicants who apply as a 'back up plan' but unfortunately I feel like it is going to be an increasing battle until the job market starts excelling again! =)

Also the '1200' was the estimated TOTAL applicants, not just IS applicants, sorry I didn't clarify that. It is still a large over all number, and I would assume the majority are IS lol

I've looked at the statistics for several other Vet schools - Auburn, TAMU, & NC State. The percentage of OOS applicants is 70-80%. Based upon that information, I seriously doubt that the majority of applicants to UGA are IS.

UGA only admits like 2 OOS students, so it's very reasonable that the majority is IS because many people don't think it's worth applying to UGA as OOS. IS would also include the contract states.

Go take a look at the posted statistics on the UGA Vet Med website. For the posted 2 years the majority of applicants are OOS. Your rationale does not appear to be sound.

In other news:

I had a reference contacted ! Not sure if that's good or bad news this late in the game, but at least it's news! 🙄
