UGA c/o 2023

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just to add on to the previous answer as far as supplies, they will be giving you specific requirements for laptops, so don't buy a laptop until they give you that info! Things you will need for sure, and can go ahead and buy if you'd like: a stethoscope (95% of us have some type of Littmann), gloves (for anatomy lab), and several sets of scrubs (for anatomy lab, so you probably don't want to buy the super nice expensive ones at this point). That's really all the supplies you need to get you through first year!
Sorry but I have an additional question haha. Is there any sort of buddy system/mentor ship program with older students?

Yes! You will get a vet school “big” at the beginning of the year, who will be in the class above you. They’re kinda just there to be a person you can always rely on, ask questions to, get advice from, etc. A lot of times, they will also give/ loan you their anatomy books (which is the only book you need first year)!

Beyond this “formal” mentorship, you can honestly approach just about anyone at the school and they’ll be happy to help you with anything. It really is like family here and everyone takes care of each other 🙂

What kind / number of pets does local housing offer? Looking to move with a rabbit and 2 cats and trying to see how possible this is

Lots of different housing options (apartments, houses etc). Lots of students have pets. Shouldn’t be a problem to accommodate a rabbit and 2 cats.

I have 2 large breed dogs through undergrad at UGA. Athens is a VERY pet friendly town! If you know you’re coming here though, you should hop on housing fairly fast. People generally start signing leases for the school year in November-December around here!

For those of you doing file reviews: is anyone else a little frustrated about having to wait until April 22nd to contact admissions to do so? I understand that they’re incredibly busy and there’s nothing to do to change it.

I guess I’m just having a minor freak out at this point. My concern is that if it’s an experience issue that I will have to find a new job and possibly move and that doesn’t leave much time for that depending on how long the response takes.

For anyone that has had to do a file review previously, do you remember how long the response took? Thank you!

This happened to me last years cycle. I tried to call and email Parker MULTIPLE times. I left emails and voicemails and got no response. I did wait until after the date they said and I still could not get anyone to call me back. They had a workshop scheduled for the people who got denied so they wouldn’t have to spend time with each one individually but then they cancelled it last minute. I would not rely on this because chances are if it’s anything like last year for me, you will never hear back from them. Luckily, I had a folder review with another school and I just went off of their advice but if I had to wait on UGA to call or email me back I would have been SOL.

I contacted Parker on the first day we were allowed to last year and had my meeting within the next week! It’s definitely hard to wait until April but I got mine set up shortly after and talked to Parker on the phone for about 30 minutes or so. I thought it was very helpful and positive at the time and I took the advice he gave and did more just to be safe and still didn’t get in this year.. I know he’s not the only one that makes the decision but take his opinion with a grain of salt because although he may be able to guide you in the right direction, doing what he recommends will not guarantee you a spot the following year! Good luck with everything!!

Oh goodness. Well I’m sorry that happened, hopefully they have things straightened out this year. I hope that you’ve gotten accepted!

The wait is awful! I know it’s not all on him, my biggest issue is that I’m non-trad, already have two degrees and I’m lot quite sure what else I need to do to give me a better chance. My gpa is around the same as everyone else and I have a ton of experience. Could stand to do better on my essays and the GRE, but I need some direction! If it’s not large animal with a dr experience (I have large animal exp) then I’m very much so considering a position at the teaching hospital since I’m an RVT. Thank you for the advice, I hope you were accepted into another uni!

I got accepted at another school. UGA is difficult to get accepted into. But I can’t speak for anyone else’s experiences with the folder review but my own and it wasn’t good on my end....
But it all worked out for the better. I just wasn’t meant to go there.

Removed myself from the OOS alternate pool for anyone who's looking to get off the waitlist. Good luck guys!

Another few questions. Have you heard that living on your own first year is isolating in terms of social life? Do you recommend getting a puppy right now before going?

I don’t think living on your own is isolating at all! I know of several classmates that live by themselves and they really love it. You’re with your classmates 6-8 hours per day, so you’re bound to make a great friend group no matter what. Beyond that the school, clubs, and fraternities are constantly putting on social events. I live with two non-vet grad students, and I never feel like I’m missing out on anything by not living with vet students (I actually really enjoy not living with vet students).

As far as getting a puppy, that’s totally up to you! The vast majority of my classmates either came into school with a pet, or have gotten one within our first year. I don’t have any pets myself, but they say no one leaves vet school without one! I think it might be a good idea to get a puppy now as opposed to when you are first starting classes, as it could be overwhelming to deal with a new puppy and beginning vet school at the same time. So no, I don’t think it’s a bad idea at all, it’s just totally up to what you think you can handle!

I'm from OOS and still haven't heard back from UGA. Has anyone else not heard back yet?

Do we get any discounts for pet food or monthly preventative as vet students?

Yes! You’ll get a lot more information on this once y’all start, but we get some major discounts on several dog/ cat food brands like Hills, Purina, and Royal Canin. We’re really lucky that we have these relationships with these companies (they all have student reps in the vet school)... a lot of vet schools don’t allow any corporate interaction. I know there’s also a bird food company that we get a discount from if anyone has pet birds. To my knowledge, there aren’t any equine or exotics food companies that we get discounts from. There are also companies that sponsor dinners at the vet school, and as long as you attend the dinners you get free preventative products from them (I don’t have any pets so not sure of the details on that stuff).

Have very many people been pulled from the OOS alternate list yet? I was told earlier this month I am #17, so I was hopeful about getting a call but now I’m not feeling so good about it.

I haven't heard anything, but I also didn't realize we could ask for our ranks!

I just found out that I got in! Is anyone looking for a roommate? Also, is someone able to give me information on joining the C/O of 2023 Facebook page?
