UHS Class of 2007

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey Everyone,

Has anybody heard back from financial aid yet? I was kind of hoping to find out how little money I was going to have to live on, before I get to KC. Thanks

Vanessa

Hey kappapiomega, I crunched all this stuff out about a month ago and while I may be wrong, I'm planning on the following:

If you have NO dependants, child support, or alimoney to pay;

you can figure around ~1,390/month (This is regardless of how many loans you take) The financial aid office has set this as the need for first year students. So even if you could get more, they will only allow you to borrow up to the 1,390/month. (after tuition of course 🙂) Second year goes up a bit, but not buy much. I'm not sure on the exact amount.

If you take the military scholorship, you can take their 1,150 dollar stipend, and then add a subsidized stafford on top, which would put you near 1,700/month.

Of course you can get extra money for your health insurance and a laptop, but you must prove that you are using the money for those things, thus . . . not living money.

By the way, other schools have different ceilings, the financial aid office told me that the administrators at UHS are the ones who determine our need. If you have a special situation you may talk to them directly.

Perhaps a 2006'er might have better input. Hope that helps, John

Hey guys. For those of you who won't be covered by your parents, do you have any suggestions for HMOs in the KC area? Thanks a million!

Vinti

How do I check PM at SDN? Thanks

Hey prettymean! Just look on the bottom left side where it says "forum jump". Click on the "Private messages" option and that should take you there! Or you can just click on the link that's given in the e-mail that SDN sends you to inform you that you have received a PM. I think there's one other way but I can't recall. Either way, I hope this helps! Btw, if you don't mind my asking, what's your name? Referring to you as "prettymean" is making me feel condescending. 🙂

Vinti 🙂

P.S. Newfocus: I finished it! I don't want to say anymore and give up the ending for you. Enjoy reading it!

Hey everyone! I'm a member of 2006 but wanted to say hello and congratulations to all of you! I live in Century Towers, so if any of you have questions just give me a holla. Enjoy the rest of your summer and see you in a few weeks!
Desiree🙂

Yes, there are microwaves in CT. The kitchens are very efficient. I've cooked some nice meals for my friends, right, Desiree????🙂

M.

Anyone know if I can sneak away from orientation for a couple hours on Wednesday to pick up my parents at the airport, or is this not allowed by the school?

hey all,

Can someone from the UHS class of 2006 or someone who knows the KC area well tell me which Bank has atm machines in a safe location. It would be great if there is a bank that is relatively close to CT and in a safe area. I would appreciate any responses.

Acura,

Contact Gerry Share and he will give you all the info about blue cross/blue shield of KC. They seem to be the most prevalent insurance in the area, and they have a ppo or hmo option for you and your family. Gerry Share's Phone number is: 913-322-3421. If you already have this info, sorry, it's all I have. Good Luck and I hope you don't have any pre-existing conditions, because if so you are screwed. Believe me I know!!!!!

Vanessa

Vanessa,

How are you dealing with your preexisting condition? Or do you have coverage through your parents?

Russell

Russell,

I am staying on Cobra for 18 Months or until my husband gets a job in the KC area and can pull me in under a group plan. But as of right now I am paying $290 a month for the same coverage as what I had under my parents. If I can't get in under a group plan, then I will have to join the Missouri Health Insurance pool and pay approximately 460 a month plus 50 per month for all my medication. I guess things will be different once we are all docs, but as of right now, I am screwed!!!!!! Well guys, I am getting married on sunday and then will be on my honeymoon, so I can't talk for a while, but I look forward to seeing you in a few weeks!! Talk to you all later.

Vanessa

There are no ATM's within walking distance of CT EXCEPT the one at school...which I think is a Commerce bank.

I myself bank with US Bank, b/c I travel back and forth to Cleveland a lot and they have US Bank there...therefore no fees, etc... I drive to downtown KC to the USBank atm, no problem. Downtown is like 45 seconds away by car. Maybe 47 or 48...j/k

Bank of America has machines downtown, Commerce bank does, too.

I chose US bank b/c there was no minimum balance for a checking acct. and they are in Cleveland.

🙂
M.

ps---regarding leaving orientation....anything is possible I suppose. Call school and see what's going on that day. I think that Monday and Tuesday were the big days last year. Weds. might not be an issue.

I just have to correct Dr Mary on the ATM at the school....it is not Commerce because I get gang raped every time I make a withdraw. I get charged 1.50 at the ATM and then an additional 1.25 by Commerce. So I am not sure what the ATM is for, but definitely not Commerce!!

Peace out

Chris

Class of 2007--
Hopefully you are all enjoying your summer! And I hope that alot of your classmates check this. The reason for this post is I need to know who is interested in being a NOTEPOOL OFFICER. I think there was some confusion about emailing me if you just wanted to receive notepool. You will be signing up for that during your first week of school. If you are interested in being an officer, please email me at [email protected]

Thanks a lot!

Chris Morrissey MSII

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to say "hi" to everyone at UHS , I will be starting in Aug 2003 as well.

I read about the party idea, I think it's a great suggestion and having it at CT would be a good idea as well. I am not living there this fall but I would be interested in meeting a few of you that do live there so we might be able to get together to study at times.

I'll confess as well to being a member of the Harry Potter cult too! I am already looking forward to the next movie also. I am sure by November (if it follows the first two) I will be ready for a weekend out!

By the way are any of you SDNers runners? I am looking for someone to continue running with, or even training for another marathon with, if we have the time.

Looking forward to meeting all of you!
Michele

hey michele. welcome to the thread!! do you have an AIM screen name? mine is brdDO2007. looking forward to meeting you.

brad

Hi Michelle! Welcome to the thread! I don't know about the running part...but I'll definitely join you for that night out in November!! 🙂 Btw, when are you moving to KC? And are you really far from CT?

See you in a few weeks!

Vinti 🙂

Hey Michele,
Welcome.

Hey everyone Brad, Vinti, Dave, and Ankur,
Just got back from Washington DC, but I found out there are a lot of Commerce banks in the NJ/NY area. I drove by 5 last week and I realized that they existed in our area. If you are planning to move back and forth between KC and NJ/NY area they are pretty good and also free checking...
Anthony (D15athsu is my IM for anyone who wants to IM me)

Hey guys! Hope everyone is enjoying their summer vacation...what little is left (I move there in 12 days.... 😱 )

Anthony: Be careful about Commerce Bank. I found several in my area as well; however, they're not affiliated with those in KC. It turns out that there are two different commerce bank franchises (?). I called the local branch several weeks ago and that's what they told me. But if you know otherwise please let me know so I can open up an account too! Oh and if the Commerce thing turns out to be a no go then you can try BOA...even though they don't have a branch nearby I think that there's a way to open an account online...not too sure about that though. Also, I'm not sure if BOA has an ATM near school. I think I'm going to have to cogitate on this one for a while before opening an account.

Its a beautiful night here in NJ...Think I'll go get a rootbeer float...Sorry Ankur I know I talk about the float waaaay too often....Can't help it....I'll never get satiated....'m obsessed...I'm goign to drag everyone at CT one night for rootbeer floats! 🙂

Vinti

Hey Guys,

This is Awesome, I feel like I know you guys even b4 school started...

As far as banks go, there is one in the cafetaria (ATM) I dont know what bank it is affiliated with? The Bank of America is that National? I'll have to look around Chicago for one.

DOES NE ONE KNOW--- what the heating and cooling bills are like at CT per month?

BTW= here are things that I'm up for...

Running-no more that 5K (sorry I could never do 26M)
Biking-Brad you have to help me fix this fork
Pingpong/Pool Dave im practicing
Rollerblading-need to find the bolt, missing a wheel
Tennis-hope your arm feels better liz
Swimmin-Does UHS have a pool?
Chess/skiing/BBQ

K, take care guys see you in August!
Apt 812 AOL IM> xxAnksxx

As far as the 8th goes we can meet up in CT and then hit the clubs or bars or whatever...

Ankur😛

Hey class of 2007!

I havent been on SDN in ages... but had the opportunity to read some of your thread... you guys sound like a pretty cool class! Well anyway, I'm a 2nd year at UHS and thought I'd congratulate you all on your acceptance and welcome you all to UHS! Its a cool place for the most part but come every six weeks when test weeks comes around... I can't say that I have the same attitude about UHS!🙂... Well, hope you are all having a great and chillaxin' summer!... Live it up while you can!🙂

See you all soon!

Hey all,

Well, it looked like my house wouldn't sell in time for me to purchase a house in KC before school starts. I secured a short term (three month) lease at Forest Park Apartments and will be looking for a house as soon as mine sells here.

My wife and I will be driving out from CA and hope to arrive on the eighth or ninth. If one of you party animals could PM me a cell phone # or some way of finding out where the fiesta is when we get there we'll definately join you.

See you people soon,

Russell

Hi guys

😀

Since i'm so used to talking to some of you guys on AIM I've been slacking here in the forum.

I need to firstly admit to also being a closet Harry Potter fan, and I read the 5th book in about 4.5 hours. Personally I liked the 4th one the best.

Anyways.....

Ankur, we'll play tennis, and perhaps we can invite Vinti and them to play doubles, or just to get what else but Root Beer floats.... i guess i'll have to add on vanilla ice cream and A & W on to my weekly shopping list. Anyways.... I'll play tennis, just not for hours on end, besides what a great way to work off stress.

Oh and I have a pool at my appts, so if nothing else I guess you guys can come over to swim.

Personally I am almost packed, I have my giagantic suitcase with clothes, and a shoe locker... plus all my books.... I'm hoping that my car arrives tomorrow as it has been delayed another day.

Russell, sorry to hear about the house... but I'm sure it'll sell eventually, this economy encourages slow selling times.

It's so great talking to you guys whether it is on this, or on AIM. I can't tell you how much better I feel about moving everything to MO.

Has anyone else been getting acceptances this late? I got two in the past week. Not that I for one minute considered them... but still.... I can't imagine having 25 days to get everything ready.

Ok... well i have lab... YAY for 3 more sessions of it.

TTYL

Ankur,

There is a BOA atm a very short drive from UHS.

The electric bill at CT (which is for your heating and cooling ONLY, btw) ran me an average of $30 a month. It was most expensive in the winter to heat (my highest bill was around $70). Your outlets' electricity and electric stove are included in your rent.

Ciao!
M.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the warm welcome, I wished I had found this site earlier.

Vinti, you asked where I was living, I am kind of in the same boat with Russell, my husband and I own a house in Iowa which hasn't sold yet. I found a place in North KC that offers 12month leases with a house buying clause, meaning if you buy a home you can terminate your lease. There are of course little quirks, but CT didn't offer anything but a 12 month. As the crow flies I guess I am about 13 miles from school. I'm in the New Mark Apartment complex. I'll be moving some stuff down this weekend but not really taking up residence until the last weekend in July. I too have a pool and tennis courts!!

Are any of you in the second session of the summer course?

Did any of you inquire about being a notepool officer?

The countdown has begun! See you guys soon.

Michele

How's everyone doing. It's a hot summer 😎 I hope everyone is enjoying their time off, although at times I do feel like doing some work already. Does anyone know the name of the bank that owns the ATM in the cafeteria? I'll be moving in August 9th into CT 514. Hope to see you all soon so we can party and enjoy KC. 🙂 Later.

hey guys! i was shocked to see the numerous posts today....woohoo...I'm having such a wonderful time getting to know everyone.

I'm not sure if i already asked this but is anyone moving into CT around July 25th?? (please say yes) I don't want to be there alone....eeps. As for all of you who are moving there in Aug....fear not, Vinti will have scoped out the nearest grocery stores and ice cream parlors by the time you get there. Oh and Elizabeth, in reference to your grocery list....you are my new best friend  (oh my goodness that's a freaky smily)

Michelle, 13 miles?! I hope you'll still come visit us at CT!! May I bribe you with homemade cookies? Acutally they're quasi-homemade...

Well I'm almost done packing. I'm only allowed to bring three boxes (airline luggage limitations) so I'm a little despondent ... because that means that i have to take my brother's dinky little TV....I think I have toes that are bigger than the dumb TV!!! This bites....

Okay I have to run....have to convince my brother to go with me to get you know what....mouth watering....mmm

Vinti 🙂

Hey folks, its good to see that I will have lots of company at CT. I will be moving in on the weekend of the 1st and will be just passing time until class starts. So who is going to take charge of social events before school starts??? 🙂 Anyway, I look forward to meeting all you soon! Hope you guys have a smooth transition to KC.

P.S. jaxontucker is my ID on AIM if anyone wants to chat😎

See ya'll soon,

Eric

Hello everyone,

Mary, thanks for the info about CT utilities bills and ATM info!

Looks like we'll have some fun times in KC... Its been awesome getting to know you guys through AIM. It definately reduces some of the medical school anxiety I have.

SO the baseball game is on the 13th, who is planning on going?
are there any 2nd years who would like to comment on it?
It is a family thing or for students only?

Take care,

Ankur🙂

AIM>> xXAnksXx
PS. im doing the summer orientation study thing Aug 4th-8th, anyone else in that?😉

Hi everyone

Vinti, I am a sucker for cookies of any kind, they are a great source of carbs (a runner's excuse!).

I am moving a few of my things down to KC this weekend but won't take up permenant residence until the last weekend in July/first weekend in August.

Everyone enjoying packing as much as I am?

BTW my AIM is Lv2Run42K.

Michele

Ooooo...now i know Michelle's weak spot....That's okay though nearly everyone knows mine by now!

Anthony: sorry I forgot to ask before but how was your trip to DC??

Charles: Hi! I tried IMing you today but you weren't around. Hopefully we'll get to know each other before school starts....

Dave: I'm so sorry that I've been logging on and off so quickly on AIM....Things have been very crazy lately....Hope you're not annoyed....I'm really really really sorry!

Eric: Hi! Welcome to the thread! Hope you're enoying your summer!

Ankur: I'M NOT NUTS! I'm just...well....unique 😀

Other then packing and entertainign guests...i haven't been partaking in anything remotely adventurous! Oh I saw Minority Report again yesterday....Tom Cruise.... 😍 (the girls understand)

** all this from a girl who practically had to be forced to post a message a few weeks ago...wonder where all the reticence went??

Keep smiling everyone,
Vinti 🙂

Hey all my fellow classmates! Congrats to us all that will be attending UHS this Aug! I am Joe Grieco. I am planning to move out to KC this weekend. I should be arriving on Sun. July 20th or possible Mon. the 21st. I am driving from Tampa, FL so the trip will be long (not as long as some of us). I look forward to meeting you all. The "pre-class night out" sounds great. If anyone is already in KC or will be soon PM me, maybe we can do something! See you then and hope to hear from you all soon.

😉 Hey all! I too am starting this fall and am very excited! It will be great to meet you all in person! BTW--is anyone else a bit confused about the dress code?? I was told at the interview it was either professional dress or scrubs, but when I read the official dress code on uhs.edu it said that casual dress was fine except for at special events, and clinicals. If anyone can clarify that would be fabulous...exactly what does casual mean?? Jeans?? Business casual?? and does anyone know if we have to have a certain color scrubs at all??
Thanks everyone! Can't wait to see you at the White Coating!

The current dress code (which was changed for the class of 2006 and beyond) is single colored scrubs (no patterns) or slacks and tie w/ white coat for the men and dress/slacks + white coat for women. For the most part, students where scrubs.

Tie?? I wasn't aware of this. I thought that slacks and a polo shirt was ok.

Students are expected to dress appropriately and respectfully while on campus. Except for clinical labs, guest lectures, and other special events, a casual dress code is acceptable. The casual dress code does not include ripped clothing, cutoffs, short or tight clothing, baseball caps, and clothing with obscene or offensive wording. In addition to a clean, white lab coat, students must dress professionally while on clinical experiences and designated presentations. Professional dress includes a shirt, tie, and slacks for male students, and a dress or a professional shirt with a skirt or slacks for female students. Professional dress is also required for guest lectures and designated events.

This is from the UHS website. I think it's pretty clear.

Hey,

Welcome to the post Dizzypie.

Dress code, no cargos and a hoodie? 😕 Isn't it true that student retain more information when they are comfy? Oh well, I guess as Docs we are all required to dress up, might as well get used to it.

Secondly, the oath, I dont know if you guys got it in the mail? Do we have to recite it solo on stage, from what I read earlier in the post it seemed like we would be reciting it as a class, if anyone knows please do let me know.

Thanks,

Enjoy the rest of summer,
1MONTH left!

Take care, see you guys in Aug,

Ankur😉

Hi Dizzypie and Jgrieco!! Welcome to the post! Are either of you doing the summer program??

Dizzypie, I love your username!! Anyway, where are you from? Are you going to be at CT next year?

Jgrieco, Florida?? I wish I were there right now!! I'm moving to CT on teh 25th...Hopefully we'll run into each other (provided you're going to reside there of course)

Ankur, reciting the oath one a time would be much too time consuming; ergo, I think that they will make us recite it collectively.

Oh and what in the world are dress shoes? They mentioned that we weren't allowed to wear sandals....Sandals are the only things I've ever worn with dresses! Are they referring to close toed shoes?? pumps?? I wish I were a guy! sorry guys...I didn't mean to trivialize your efforts at dressin gup =)

Have a lovely day!!

Keep smiling,
Vinti

A tie is not necessary for just everyday classes. Guys just have to wear slacks and a collared shirt (and your white coat ). Basically, proper golf attire. Most of us just wear scrubs. See you guys in a couple of weeks.

Hey All,
I'll be joining you at UHS in one month! Yeah! I've been in Kansas City for two weeks now and am starting to get a bit bored so far from home--San Francisco. Anyone here and want to get together? Would love some human contact. I met a slough of second (going on third) years the other night at the Empire Room. They are all very encouraging and fun to hang out with but unfortunately most are moving away in two weeks for rotations. Also if anyone is looking for a place to live, there a several vacancies coming up in my complex which is only a 7 minute drive from UHS. Looking forward to hearing from you.

😎

Hi DrJem! I'll be in KC this Friday! Once I've unpacked I'd love to meet up!!! I'm going to be all alone until my roomie moves in!

I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend...I'm running around like a nutso trying to pack and meet up with friends and family (everyone keeps making me cry 🙁 )...wish i could pack them all in my bags too....anyone feeling melancholy before even arriving in KC?? I'm meeting my best friend for lunch today.....I know she's going to make me bawl...its okay though I'm taking comfort in the fact that I'll get to make new friends soon!

See you all soon! Keep smiling!

Vinti =)

Good lord... 20 pages? And here I thought OSU was doing doing good with a class of 2007 thread actually hitting a second page. I figure we should hit page three by around Christmas break.

Pretty impressive.
