UNECOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have an interview at UNECOM on Jan 25, and I'm trying to arrange flights, etc. However, as it's Christmas, admissions is not open (and good for them for having the time off.) Can anyone fill me in on what the average time table for interviews at UNECOM is, and when the day typically ends? (Also, is it usually just the interview and a tour, or are there optional 'excursions' one can go on (class experiences, etc)?)

In addition, I have read in some older posts that applicants have stayed with students before - is this still a possibility, and if so, is it possible to arrange just by calling admissions, or do I need to do something else?

Lastly, does anyone have any insight into the interview? I'm an older student, and not nearly as "green" as I was when I applied fresh out of college, but I still would appreciate some insight into what I might be asked.

Looking forward to others' thoughts and comments.

Actually, statistically you have a better shot as an out of state person. The majority of their applications come from New England so that's the majority of their students are from. But remember UNE is a private school, so they have no "in-state" status.

Stay in Florida if that's where you're comfortable.

Definitely comfortable here! I don't miss the snow at all. Thanks for taking time to answer my question ShyRem.

I received an interview today via email. I wouldn't give up hope yet, they are still offering interview dates. Mine is on 1/25.

Good luck to everyone!!

Congrats Ihnren - I'll be there on the 25th as well. Where you coming from/how are you getting to the Uni? Glad to "know" at least one person who'll be there that day.

I don't attend UNECOM and just happened upon this thread, but have you tried looking in the interview review section of SDN?

I officially got the "We have a lot of qualified applicants, and you are not one of them" letter in the mail, right before Christmas.

Good luck to all of you interviewing, as well as those who already got in!

when were you complete?

I think I was officially complete in October after I sent my MCAT scores from Sept 2010. Stats-wise, I have a 3.58 cGPA and a 28 on the MCAT (10/10/8). I got the letter on Dec 23, 2010.

That's one down I guess... 🙁

I've made my decision... UNECOM 2015, here I come! I'm so excited to be moving out to Maine and meeting you all in a few short months!

I hate the whole "game." Good luck to you with the remaining.

I received an invitation to interview this morning....date is February 8th. I'm not sure if I'll attend as I've been accepted to GA-PCOM and I really like the school.

For those who are curious: My cGPA and sGPA is 3.26, 27Q MCAT and I'm from Louisiana (although I lived in Upstate NY for most of my life).

This school takes forever to decide what to do. I've been complete since september. No rejection or interview invite.

In which case you're not rejected, nor are you at the top of their pile. Plenty of folks who have been rejected earlier would love to be in the "no rejection yet, but no invite yet either" pile. At least they would still be under consideration.

True. However, At least a word at somepoint would be nice. I have an acceptance elsewhere so i'm not overly worried about it. Ever other place got back to me so fast though.

Received interview invite a couple days ago - not sure if I'll head up there or not. I recently paid my deposit at Nova and really liked the school alot. I'm trying to figure if it would be worth the cost of travel to check out UNECOM. Looks like a great school.

I was complete in October maybe? 3.3 GPA and 32Q mcat, from the South

I'm in the same boat as you.

They always say to go to every interview. You never know how much you like a school until you actually go there. If its financially feasible, I would go if I were you.

Thanks, Postal.. that's an excellent point

Hey guys
I am heading up to UNECOM this week for an interview on Thursday (Jan. 13th). I was wondering if anyone else will be attending this date as well.

I know there is a big storm that is supposed to hit the east coast and it's going to be real tough to get into and out of Maine, but I'm going to do my best to make it there. Anyone else?

Are you a UNECOM student? If so, how do you like it?

I just arrived in Portland. I will be staying in portland and driving to my interview on thursday. This area is supposed to be hit with snow tomorrow so I hope I will be able to make it there without too much trouble on thurs.

No. I start in August. My friend who is a MS II enjoys it.

Good luck on your interview. Keep us posted.

This school takes forever to decide what to do. I've been complete since september. No rejection or interview invite.

I recently called to find out the status of my application and they said it could be 7 to 8 weeks from when my application was complete. I was complete early November so that means I should hear back from them by Monday. How true is that 7-8 week time frame?

Finally heard something from UNE. Rejected, no interview. ~3.5 GPA, 37 mcat. OOS with remainder of family living in Maine. go fish.

edit: secondary submitted mid september

....why am I thinking this is bull****?

37 MCAT, 3.5 GPA, ties to Maine..and not even an interview invite???
Just doesn't sound right...

... Why would I lie? My ECs are pretty shabby. I'm coming from an electrical engineering/comp sci background/degree, so I haven't been focused on this since high school. Anyways, I got into westernu @ lebanon, so it's all good.

edit: maybe they didn't like my essays or something.

I can't tell you why you would lie....people constantly lie on this forum, and all forums, regarding aspects of their life. Perhaps you are telling the truth, but it just seems very unlikely to me that UNECOM would not even want to interview someone with a 3.5 and 37 MCAT.
Regardless, congrats on your acceptance to Western. Did you just apply DO or did you apply MD as well?

I just interviewed at UNECOM this past thursday and absolutely loved the school.

For those of you who interviewed with me this past thurs (13th), I called UNECOM yesterday and asked when we should expet to receive a decision. I was told the committee is meeting this coming thursday and that we will very possibly receive an email the day after that (friday), and if not friday, it will be the following monday. Good luck!!

MD/DO. I'm waitlisted at a couple places. I think it really comes down to my ECs. I had very little volunteer experience, no research, etc. I've always done well on standardized tests

Congrats on your interview, good luck. Maine is an awesome place to live

UNE looks for more than numbers. They look for a "fit". Your app didn't have what they were looking for.

I wasn't complaining or arguing with their decision.

Hi guys,

I was complete at UNECOM on Jan,14 and 4 days later I got an invitation for interview (in february). Is that a good sign that it came that fast? Any spots still available at this point?

Any comments would be helpful.

I think it is safe to say that all interview invites are "good signs," haha. Don't read too much into it. Just study up on the school and practice for a good interview. Its the best/only thing you can do.

Hey guys,

So as I mentioned ,I interviewed on the 13th. For those that interviewed with me that day, we should be hearing early this coming week (likely monday or tuesday).

I absolutely loved the school and am dying to receive an acceptance.

Does anyone know how filled their class is at this point and how likely we are to receive an acceptance given the date of our interview (Jan 13th).

I know some schools are near full and accepting extremely few from recent interview groups, but others still have plenty of spots and still accept a large % of those who interview.

Does anyone know what the case is for UNECOM at this point?

What is the quality of food at this school? Do they have cafe's all around or just centrally located?

I love this question. I don't think I've ever seen a post about the quality of food at a med school.

They have cafe's and dining halls. The tour guide said the food at the halls were good. I had a muffin from one of the cafe's. Can't complain.

For anyone from the Jan 13th interview group:

I called admissions today and was told that the committee met this past thursday and made their decisions and now the dean just has to "sign off" on the decisions and that we should be hearing very soon (def. this week).

Is anyone else waiting to hear from this group?

I eat at the caf 3-4 days a week. It's 4.75$ al a carte, which is stellar when you bring tupperware, snag fruit and a couple coffees. As for food quality, it's definitely middle of the road but it's cheap and it's easy.

All else equal, I wouldn't choose UNE for their cafeteria food (and it's def not wear the tuition money is going). 🙂

Waiting. Not very patiently.

I'm with ya.

So you were in the Jan. 13th group? If so, which one were you? There were only 7 of us there I believe that day due to the weather.

I was the 31 year old guy from NJ, right outside of NYC.

I'm the UNE undergrad. It's not looking too good for me for this year, but I still have some sort of hope left.

Hmmmm... I remember someone there saying they were a UNE ungrad but I can't picture who it was. Are you male/female? I think I may remember-are you caucasian male?

Why do you say its not looking good for u this year? I would imagine being a UNE undergrad would be in your favor. Have you received any acceptances or interviews elsewhere? Anyhow, good luck!

Caucasian female.
I haven't heard from anywhere else. I applied to 6 schools all over. I only applied DO. My MCAT score is a bit low. I've called the other schools I applied to. If they are looking for a passion for osteopathic medicine, I have it.
I think the fact that I am a UNE undergrad helped me get an interview, but it probably won't help me get in. I'm not trying to be pessimistic, I just want to save myself from a ton of disappointment later. I am retaking my MCAT on Friday, so hopefully, I will be able to send along updated scores.
