UNECOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I was complete 8/18 (with secondaries). I still haven't heard. I have a 25O MCAT and a 3.47 GPA. I live in CO. Is it safe to say that I'm not being considered at this point? I've been a nurse for 4 years also... What are the stats of people who got interviews?

What do the 10/19 interviewees think about the program? interview? etc.

The interview was very conversational. Most of the questions were pertaining to my application with a few of the standard questions sprinkled in.

The program has a course called DOctoring which allows for some early clinical experience which is great. The facilities are really nice minus the small library and the fact that undergrads share the COM building. The students who spent the day with us seemed annoyed that they didn't have their separate space. OPP lab was really nice and histo lab was huge. All the cells for histo are computerized so you don't have to mess with microscopes and slides. We didn't get to see the anatomy lab.

Also found out that most of the students have to move out of their rentals during the summer because they literally can't afford to stay there due to the big tourist season.

I wish we would find out the decision via email instead of waiting for snail mail.

Tourist season rentals on the beach go for thousands of dollars A WEEK. This is the period of Memorial day through labor day. This means you don't have a place to live the first month of school if you sign for a seasonal rental.

There are rentals available for year-round, but you might be a bit farther from the beach. Still close enough though. Saco has some apartments for year round rent, as does Portland. And there are graduates who bought places before that rent to students and ONLY students. Keep your eyes and ears out as it gets closer to August.

The undergrads are a bummer. They like to take the little rooms on the first floor all the time and while usually nice, can get pretty pissy about vacating space for what they view as the "arrogant med students who are oh so privileged and have a freakin' ton of money". Mostly as med students you're too darn busy to deal with the undergrads or even to acknowledge they're there. Does get crowded during lunch time at the cafe' though.

Be careful in lab too - leave your box of gloves or your instruments in anatomy lab and they'll walk when the PA students come to anatomy lab. More than once I found my box of small gloves totally empty literally one week after I bought them.

Man I've been reading some terrible things about this school lately. Beautiful location but students have the highest debt in the country, not getting the greatest clinical rotations, and poorly taught lectures. Any current students care to comment?

I visited the campus and talked to the previous head of admissions for two hours and he said a recent graduate is completing his residency at the mayo clinic in MN. Not a current student but I am very impressed with the quality of the program (compared to other schools I have interviewed at). There seems to be numerous quality opportunities after graduation from UNE; but it is expensive.

Hey guys, I really liked UNECOM. The area is really beautiful and the interview itself was pretty conversational. It is open file so they asked questions for clarification or to discuss something they found interesting about your application. Interview lasted about 30 minutes. Most of the applicants were from all over the U.S. and only about 2 or so were from New England( I think)so I don't feel like they limited the interviews to people from the New England area.

The facilities were nice and because the school is located on an undergraduate campus it has that "campusy" feel. The med school students are mixed in the undergraduates so it seems like finding a study space may seem like an issue.

So now....I wait.....:scared:

I'm planning to take biochemistry winter or spring term in 2011 - will this delay review of my application. Will they not review applications until all pre-requisites are completed?

Thanks!

Not having completed all pre-requisites won't delay review of your application. I got an interviewed and accepted without having completed biochemistry--although I am currently taking it. Acceptance is contingent upon completing prerequisites before classes start in the fall. Good luck! 🙂

Hey guys, current MS-I here. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have about unecom from a first year's point of view, just message me.

And no, taking biochem this winter/spring shouldn't delay your app 😳

What is a realistic housing cost and location? How was winter driving?

Winter driving no problem if you're used to it. Really, though, the roads are pretty clear most of the time and if the weather gets really bad the university shuts down. I have a sedan with front wheel drive and had ZERO problems.

Housing depends on what you want to spend, where you want to live, and what you want to live in.

Since I'm a first year and it hasn't snowed yet, I don't know how the driving is. You can find housing in Biddeford and the surrounding area for $350 and up (depends on number of roommates, if you even have roommates, location, etc.) Obviously the more roomies you have, the less you're gonna pay. It will also depend on if your utilities are included, cable/internet, stuff like that. Most people I know (remember this is just my opinion) are paying from $400-$800/month for their rent and utilities. Some places will be more expensive, some won't.

Hope that helps!

yayyyy

accepted for 2015 UNECOM!!!

DO BY CHOICE YO! lol

Stop obsessing. There is no formula. There is no multiplication, division, or particular score that makes you a shoe-in for an interview.

Relax. If they like your application, you'll get an interview. If they don't, you won't. They're looking for a particular "fit". Not necessarily a set of numbers.
well if there is no score then thats great. I wasn't really obsessing, i recently found out that another school im interested in calculates your numbers by one of their own formulas and thats how they decided to interview you or not. i was just wondering if une did the same thats all. ok maybe i am obsessing but i really like the school and the area. plus i have family in maine so i hope they overlook the fact that im from nj and possibly consider that i have family near the school.

I understand you're obsession. I know its difficult to want something so badly but yet feel as if there's nothing left that you can do about it. I feel really bad for my friends and family who have had to endure my obsessive discussions about the medical school admissions process.

I really hope you get an interview.🙂

If you think med school obsessions are bad, wait until residency interviews. 🙄

And yes, we all obsessed over getting in somewhere. For some of us it was one particular somewhere, for others of us it was ANYwhere.

Well you've only been complete about 2 weeks, that is a very short amount of time, especially this year.

I have been complete about 6 weeks and still no word.

What are your stats?

to anyone that interviews already: how long is the interview day/when are we done? I'm interviewing next Tuesday and am trying to figure out how many hours I'm renting my Zipcar for.

Thanks...I interviewed at Touro...but my general advice for all interviews and what I have come to appreciate is that, your personality plays a huge role in your interview. Feel the general vibe of the school and try to sync yourself with it, while being yourself. Sounds a bit abstract but it works for me. Smile a lot, talk freely to other applicants, if you can, try to lead the interview (I did in all of mine). Do you have a great story? Tell it...don't make them ask you the same old boring questions or hear the same old boring answers from other interviewees and by all means don't be afraid to show your passion for the things that drive you to medicine and make you YOU. BE unique...

Hope this helps!

Congratulations dunna! Accepted today also!! I called admissions because of an upcoming interview and was given the great news. Admissions said that letters are going out today. 😍 UNE Class of 2015

Hey postal! I had to call cos I needed to know, with the Touro deadline apporaching and all.... so they confirmed by phone that they had accepted me and were sending out the mail today...apparently a bunch of acceptances were awaiting dean approval...hopefully yours is one of them!

Wow. I'm excited and nervous at the same time! If I get accepted, I'll have to make the same decision as you!

Congrats Firfghtr! We are class of 2015! Must be a big relief since you almost wasted money on other interviews! See you in class!

Accepted!! Interviewed 9/28

I e-mailed Lisa Lane because it had been a while and I was wondering if it had gotten lost in the mail (my school's mailroom is a little nutty). She told me that decisions went in the mail yesterday but that I could look forward to an acceptance 😀

I'm not sure whether I'm gonna go here, but it's a great school- I'm excited!

Hey Dunaa,

I grew in New England and UNE is one of my choices. If you don't mind, can you post your stats for us? 😉

I've been complete since late August at UNECOM. I recently called and they said my application was under review. Any word on how late UNECOM will keep inviting students? I'm grateful already having an acceptance to a school, but would like to interview and hopefully get accepted at UNECOM as I live in New Hampshire not to far away and would be close to family and old friends.

I suppose no answer is better than a rejection though, any ideas? :scared:

My stats were 24 MCAT (9VR, 8BS, 7PS) 3.7 G.P.A. Lot's of exposure over 600 hours to M.D.'s and D.O's. I'm just guessing they didn't like something about my app.

Good luck to you Smmossey! I grew up in Lawrence, I used to go to New Hampshire all the time!

Accepted! Emailed Lisa Lane and she said my letter is on its way. First acceptance of the season. Not sure if i will end up attending if i get other acceptances- the location isn't ideal for me, and tuition is sky-high. But it does feel good to be accepted somewhere!!

Gratz Canadian!👍

Just received an interview invite this past week! I'm super excited! For those of you who have interviewed here do you have any helpful tips? Maybe certain questions they asked? Also how many people do you interview with and is it one on one or multiple interviewers at once? Thanks!

I'm in!!! Just got the letter like the rest of you and will likely be attending here. Starting to get excited about possibly moving to Maine since I always vacation there. Now I just need to come up with $2000 😀

I described my interview somewhere earlier in this thread. Additionally, check-out the interview feedback button at the top of the page.

Overall though, I can say that the interview was really relaxed,stress-free, and the only tip I think I can give you is to know your application since it's open-file.

i had 3 people and like postal said, the questions asked were file specific so you should know your file. make sure if u have any red flags on your application that you are prepared to answer them. my interview was extremely conversational and i thought it was the best interview I've had. but i messed up on a question and got waitlisted

Also, if you applied both to DO and MD programs be prepared to explain why. I was grilled pretty hard on this and got a bit flustered (finally came up with something about not caring as much about the degree as about finding a good fit).

Overall though, like everyone else is saying, pretty relaxed atmosphere and everyone was really enthusiastic and open to any kind of question. I spent about ten minutes of my interview talking about running.

yup, they asked me this too, and I applied more DO than MD.

So, I interviewed 10/19 and still haven't heard anything. I emailed Lisa Lane and her reply back was that the admissions committee is meeting tomorrow concerning candidates who interviewed on my day and early November, then the dean will have the final say. She said that decision letters could possibly be out before Thanksgiving but gave no guarantees. I guess there is more waiting. Crazy how long it takes them.
