Phoenix OMFS Residency at Banner University - A Thriving and Inclusive Community
Hello future Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons,
As you prepare to submit your applications with fresh CBSE scores and impressive resumes, I understand the frustration and overwhelm that may come with selecting among 110+ programs. Some of you may have already completed externships with certain programs, helping you explore the field and guide your path. Today, I would like to introduce our program to offer insight into what awaits you if you haven't externed with us yet.
Welcome to the Phoenix OMFS Residency program at Banner University Medical Center, Phoenix (BUMCP), affiliated with the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix. Our mission is to provide an exceptional educational experience that cultivates outstanding future surgeons. We foster a strong, inclusive, and collaborative resident community, offering unparalleled mentorship from esteemed attending physicians and promoting an exciting social life in the vibrant city of Phoenix.
Our Attendings: Expertise Beyond Measure
Our attending team consists of accomplished and devoted surgeons who have made significant contributions to the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Beyond the common OMFS field, our attendings possess expertise in various areas, including TMJ surgery, zygomatic implants, craniofacial reconstruction, and more. Their passion for sharing knowledge and providing individualized guidance ensures that each resident gains a comprehensive understanding of the field. Under their mentorship, our residents have the unique opportunity to work on complex cases, honing advanced surgical skills, and preparing for successful careers in the field. Moreover, we are currently working closely with Oculoplastic and ENT surgeons to enrich our residents' experiences further. Additionally, we are in the process of adding more OMFS/Plastic surgeons to our program, expanding the horizons of learning and collaboration.
A Hub of Excellence: Level 1 Trauma Center
As a Level 1 trauma center, BUMCP presents an exceptional opportunity for our residents to learn and develop their skills in a cutting-edge, patient-centered environment. Taking trauma call provides invaluable experience in managing challenging cases, enhancing residents' clinical acumen, and readiness to handle diverse and emergent situations. Our program's hospital-based structure, alongside an outpatient clinic, offers access to state-of-the-art facilities, ensuring world-class training. Remarkably, we are the only OMFS program covering the entire state and adjacent regions, including NV, NM, UT, with a population of over 10 million. Our close collaboration with two local dental schools in the Phoenix region further enriches learning opportunities, facilitating a comprehensive and well-rounded education.

At BUMCP, we recognize the value of a diverse and inclusive resident team. Our residents hail from various ethnicities, genders, and cultural backgrounds, enriching our program with unique perspectives and experiences. This sense of unity fosters a supportive learning environment, enabling residents to collaborate, share knowledge, exchange ideas, and grow together. This holistic approach nurtures well-rounded and compassionate patient care, creating exceptional surgeons with a deep understanding of patient needs.
Expanding Opportunities for Growth
We take immense pride in the growth and expansion of our residency program. What began with one non-categorical PGY-1 position has now evolved into three. With two categorical positions offered each year, our residents gain increased hands-on experience and learning opportunities under the guidance of our esteemed attending physicians. Furthermore, we strictly follow the GME guidelines and continuously improve residents' well-being. We have great resident benefits here, and we encourage all residents to fully utilize all available benefits regardless of their categorical status.
