University of Minnesota c/o 2024 Applicants

I have until next Thursday and I am equal parts ecstatic and terrified.

I'm looking though behavioral interview questions, and I feel like I just don't have a good story for a lot of questions. Anyone else running into this, or any advice?

A few thoughts.

First, it doesn't have to be veterinary related (unless you are specifically told otherwise, such as asked about veterinary experience). It has to answer the question. It was always a joy for me doing interviews when an applicant had some interesting and completely non-veterinary answer. It was always disappointing when someone would give one veterinary answer after another, even when they didn't really fit the question very well.

Second, it doesn't have to be life-changing. They aren't assessing whether you are a Nobel prize candidate as compared to someone else. They are looking to identify how strongly you exemplify whatever characteristic the question is targeting. So if you have a comparatively trivial answer, but it perfectly targets the question, don't hesitate to go with it.

Think broadly. Relationships you've had, clubs you've been involved with, jobs you've had, volunteer activities you've done, committees you've served on, sports teams you've played on, hobbies you've had, service trips you've taken........

My interview is coming up, I am wondering if we have to bring anything with us to the interview? Nothing I have read says to bring anything, but I just wanted to check!

You do not have to bring anything.

If you are out of state and from a warmer climate, bring appropriate clothes/shoes and perhaps plan to change once on campus. Walking around campus in winter in dress shoes may not be ideal.

But as far as the interview specifically, you don't need anything.

Hey guys I’m really torn right now. I’ve already been accepted into two schools that are a lot cheaper than Minnesota but I truly love Minnesota program and really feel the atmosphere and place is a better fit for me but the only downside is the cost! Any advise or tips of OOS current students?

Disclaimer that I am IS and not OOS, but my advice is going to be to go to one of your cheaper options, especially if the difference is significant. I love UMN's program, but all schools will get you to a DVM. 4 years of what you think will be a better environment may not be worth the 10-20 years of living under a much higher debt load. I know UMN is on the expensive end of OOS tuition, so I'd heavily consider your other options. If you want you can reach out to current students at those schools- unless there are glaring issues (or cost of living brings your total cost of attendance to a similar level to UMN), long-term lower loans should be more important. If you'd like to ask specific questions about UMN when comparing feel free to PM me, I'm happy to help out!

Interviewing this Saturday! I am planning on attending the Leatherdale Equine Center Tour on Friday night. I know the email said that the attire for that is casual, but how casual do you think? Obviously I will not be showing up in sweatpants and a sweatshirt, but should I dress more business casual? Or would dark jeans (no rips) and a nice sweater be okay?

That sounds just fine- a lot of students stay in what they interviewed in that day, so if that will make you feel out of place you can dress nicer, but you certainly don't need to. You'll want to be comfortable walking around for the tour, and then probably standing for most of the meet and greet if you stay for it.

I'm an oos interviewing this afternoon and got here at 8 after my flight and it's very quiet. anyone else here?

Meeeeeeeee but I'm running around getting PhD applicants to their various interviews (if you see a loud, fast-talking maroon blur go by, it's probably me). Are you going to the equine center event tonight?

How did everyone feel like their interview was? I didn’t think it was so bad!

Same! I went in with a pretty casual attitude because I got accepted at another university with "in-state from 2nd year" policy and I think that helped me be more confident are care-free about messing up my answers... but then I saw the amazing facilities and now I'm hoping I get accepted lol.

Everyone says “go to your instate because it’s less expensive” but **** that. Go where you feel like you’ll be the happiest. Loans are loans we are going to all have them and they suck. At least make them worth it if you really love Minnesota.

These thoughts are fine for in the moment, but I think prevets completely underestimate how fast the four years fly by and it really makes little difference in where you go to school. The debt however, is a much bigger long term concern, so I feel this advice is not realistic. I would rather have that feeling of love of atmosphere for after graduation to perhaps enjoy life where you settle down rather than sacrifice it for the blip in time that is vet school.

Does anyone know how many people are interviewed at MN? They mentioned they had around 959 applicants and 105 in each class. Thanks!

"Worth it" should be having the training and skills at the end, not spending more money than you have to because you think vet school will be drastically better at one program versus another.

I LOVE this program and am always happy to see people excited about it, but vet school is hard and stressful no matter where you go, and @Lupin21 is right, the 4 years go by so quickly. Any accredited program will give you the knowledge to be a great DVM. It's not worth making your financial future more difficult needlessly. It might seem okay now in the moment, but you might not feel that way 10 years down the road when you're tired of living like a student, or when you want to start a family, or buy a house, or get back into that hobby sport that you do, or go visit your family who lives a plane ride away.

Finances don't get enough consideration (even for undergrad). My parents made me go to an undergrad school that offered me a substantial amount of financial aid, and while I didn't appreciate it then, I'm grateful for it now. I have friends who went to vet school and have upwards of $250k in debt. It's going to affect them for a very, very long time.

Just cancelled my interview for this Friday. Short notice but hopefully it gives someone else the opportunity! Good luck everyone!

I know there's still another weekend of interviews but anyone know when we should expect to hear back? (OOS)

Historically they have been the week after the final week of interviews. If that holds true this year, that would be sometime next week.

Does anyone know if we need to check in 30 minutes prior to our interview time? I feel like I’ve read all the emails but not finding the info

I just did mine yesterday. The reviewers are all wonderful, and everyone is amazing at making you feel right at home. Good luck, and have fun!
I agree! I visited two vet schools and U of Minnesota was so much better in terms of the people, them making us feel at home, and giving us all the information about the university! The other university I went to didn't really give much information other than on the tour and I really appreciated the information session and question and answer panel at Minnesota. they really cared about the applicants as much as we care about wanting to get in!

Is the info session worth going to, or is it pretty much the same as every other school. Definitely going to the tour and student panel.

Info session? I thought it WAS just the panel and the tours?

Do we have to arrive early to check in for the interviews?

Can any current OOS students speak to how difficult it is to apply and gain residency? Looking at the "Factors When Picking A Vet School" document, it seems it is up to luck if you do get residency.

It used to be easy, but that’s not the case anymore. The staff changed in the residency office a few years ago, and they give it out very rarely now. Basically you need to have solid proof that you did not move to Minnesota only to attend vet school. It doesn’t matter what your plans are beyond school. I have friends who moved and bought houses and they were still denied residency. As far as I know, the only people who have successfully applied have had some sort of ties to Minnesota or lived here as children.

Anyone know what time they started to make the acceptance calls last year? I'm waiting on pins and needles :dead:
