University of Waterloo Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
That's bizarre!!! I would suggest calling Ken at the admissions office (you can just call the pharmacy school and they'll transfer you) I doubt they wait this long to send another "batch" of interview invites 😕

Well I just got back from work expecting to see an e-mail from them in my inbox and there's nothing. I went into quest and it says my application has been received and nothing else! Maybe they decided to skip the interview for me and directly accept me 😛😛 lol I guess I will get in touch with them tomorrow to see what's going on since it seems everyone else got to hear from them today!

haha this actually happened to my friend for UW engineering, they had a supplementary form which he didn't fill out and got accepted anyways 😛 so it's a possibility 😉

just a thought, but is your inbox quota full maybe?

Haha that would actually be awesome lol 😀
Nope my inbox isn't full or close to it; there's still lots of space. But I checked quest too and there was nothing there so they must have not accessed my application yet (if that's even possible)! Anyhow, it will be interesting to hear why they've forgotten me lol

i actually don't think they update quest until final decisions are made. mine still says application as well.

hopefully it all gets sorted out tomorrow! 🙂

oh ok, I read somewhere in this forum that they change it but I guess not. Thanks for letting me know🙂 and I guess I will find out tomorrow!

Actually, they do update quest. I didn't get an interview and the quest status for admission was updated to "deny". Yours says application because you're still in the admission process, it will change after the interview.

That being said, PhArMaCiSt1 you can at least go to sleep knowing that you've actually NOT been rejected! Hope that helped and good luck 🙂

woot - got an interview too!

is anyone else from BC? It would be nice to go to waterloo with another applicant...

is anybody willing to rent out a bedroom on april 29-may 1? are there any cheap but decent hotels/motels near by? any help would be appreciated!!

I'm from BC! My interview is on the 30th. I'm willing to split the cost of rent, I guess. The cheapest one I keep finding is the comfort inn ($125/night).
To people in waterloo, are there any other cheaper hotel/motels? I don't care if it's crappy, god damnit, I'm a poor college student!

Hi guys. i got an interview for April 30 , at 9 AM 🙂
I didnt expect it, it came out of the blue (it was a passed on application from the January 2011 attempt). 3rd year trying

Is it still true that they take 120 students from 240 interviewing, anyone know?
Thanks!

So you literally just woke up with an interview? 👍 What a pleasant surprise. Was Waterloo the only place you applied?

What are your stats like if you don't mind me asking? Thanks!

Thanks Rxgurl 😀; I actually had a very good night sleep! It's too bad they denied you an interview but because waterloo has no waiting list and some people reject their offers, they always have a few spots open that you can apply for in Nov for this same Jan class. So definitely look into that when the time comes. Hope it works out for you and best of luck 😀

Is it true that Waterloo Pharmacy is also trying to get the PharmD designation like UofT?

So I heard back from waterloo and turns out my interview is on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. and the test will be written on the same day at 10:00 a.m. Now I'm getting nervous about the 5-10min presentation thing; not sure what to talk about...

Congrats dude. Did you also apply to U of T? Post your stats up.

I'm glad, and it all worked out for you! Thanks for the advice, I will definitely look into that. I remember last year some people got an interview in November.
Good luck with your interview!

Congratulations to all. I am happy for you guys.

Forgot to mention one more thing:

You will likely be asked whether you have any more questions for the interviewers before the end.. don't say you don't have any. Prepare at least one!!

This can be anything, about the school, the curriculum, about its future plans (read up on the UW pharm website to catch up on any updates they have with the family health clinics and interprofessional stuff..they're big on that). Again, this shows that you are not only passionate about the profession, but that you know what the school's values are and why you would be a matching candidate.😍

I've heard from a Waterloo pharm student that when UofT gets the PharmD designation approval, Waterloo will automatically be granted the same approval to adopt a PharmD designation because the approval is provincial rather than school-specific. If this is true, then we can expect to see this change either this year or next year.

Thanks 🙂 Yup i did and I have my interview in may 😀. I believe I posted my stats up there but I'll do it again. my cpga is 3.8/4 (calculated it using the chart UofT has). I graduated with bachelor in biochemistry so I have all the preqs that waterloo required. What about you? What's your stats like and you applied to UofT too right?

Congrats to pharmacist1 🙂

I always wonder, though, how people know who's a dude or gal here 😛😛😛😛

Thanks 😀 btw when was your interview for waterloo again?
p.s. haha you wouldn't know who's who on here 😛

Thanks 😀 Ya i know what you mean, I guess once I figure out my little speech then I will feel more confident about this whole interview thing. Whatever happens, it will nonetheless be a good experience for future interviews 🙂 Good luck with your interview, I'm sure you will leave a good impression on the panel 🙂

Thanks, ya they will open up the application sometime in august I believe so just make sure you do well in exams now so your gpa can remain strong. Once I do my interview, I will share my experience with you so you can be better prepared for your future interview 😀

April 29 -_- have test on same day...

and they don't have waitlist

i just saw this - congratulations 😀 is this your first time? how do you think one should prepare for the interview. i remember you were saying its really hard so im really scared

Anyone else who don't mind sharing their stats? It would be reaally nice if you did so... (both invitees and rejectees)
I'm espicially interested in knowing if people in the lower range gpa/grade-wise(75-80ish) manage to get interviews...that's the boat i'm in in right now...
I applied for this cycle knowing I had 0.00000001%chance because I'm missing 6 prereqs (I'm doing 3 this semester, and the other 3 I'll complete in the summer and in the fall) just to see how the application process was...
Anywho my grades dont look good but I've been working as a pharm tech for 3 years now, so that's basically the only "card" I can play as I don't have anything else remarkable in the way of ECs...( it's actually kinda empty..I definitely gotta work on that too)...plus I'm from out of province (Qc)

My grades are gonna go up a bit because I'm putting a lot more effort but I am realistc about this aspect but I'm just trying to figure out if their admission criteria have changed from the past years...I recall reading older threads about the program and some people with average grades but some decent pharm exp would get in while you had applicants with higher gpas being rejected (it seemed almost 50/50 in regards to how they weighed academics and pharm exp.)...maybe with more people applying each passing year , they're gonna change their process a bit and increase emphasis on the grades (which would just kill me haha)

anyways now I'm just rambling so if anyone got more stats to share (whether they got an invite or not), please don't be shy lol
thanks in advance

Don't stress too much over grades. Yes you do need the minimum 75% and need to have ALL the pre-reqs but after that your pharm experience, reference, work experience and ECs will get you an interview IMO.

Also broaden your options, apply to Université Laval and Université de Montreal. The more places you apply and the more places you secure an interview the greater your chances of getting in somewhere. Correct my if I'm wrong but in subsequent years it will be even harder to get into Waterloo because starting in 2013 they'll have CAP students entering into the program as well. So don't just set yourself up for only one school. Good luck.

Well, first of all you are NOT missing 6 prerequisite if you're doing 3 of them THIS term... you're only missing 3!

Secondly, don't stress man, it's all gonna be good at the end 🙂

And did you apply to the two pharm schools in Quebec? How about UofT?

And you didn't mention: did you get an interview this year?

How do you guys think they will decide who gets in after the interview and who doesnt? how will the different components be weighed?

What a coincidence... my interview and written test are exactly identical to your time slots on April 30th.

I think the interview will play a major role. Now that we've made it to the interview stage, it must mean that they've reviewed our APs and grades and those are presumably deemed competitive enough. So the interview will probably be the number one deciding factor, followed most likely by final grades. I doubt the AP will come into play again.

Yeah, I think you are right. The interview itself, followed by the written test, and the final GPA, will be the major deciding factors.
If our final GPA equals or is higher than the GPA that they calculated for the grades we already had, than we shouldn't be worried about our grades, as long as we maintain our average.

I got this from Waterloo's website and the way I understand it they don't look at grades once a candidate makes it to the interview stage.

What happens at the interview?

The specifics of the interview process continue to be refined, and will be provided to applicants who successful pass the initial screening. The interviews will take place in early May, and they will be approximately a half hour in duration. The format will be panel-style, involving teams of faculty members and practicing pharmacists. The purpose of the interview is to explore personal qualities and skills such as communication, leadership, initiative, confidence and critical thinking. The interviewers will not be informed of the applicant’s GPA, and the academic performance will not normally be further considered after the candidate reaches this second stage of the admissions process. A Reading Comprehension/Writing Test (RC/WT) is also administered at the time of the interview. Specifics about the interview and the RC/WT are provided at the time of invitation.

oh wow, awesome! that takes some of the pressure off for my 75% organic chem final tonight 😀

so i guess as long as we pass the pre-reqs, and the interview goes well, it's all good!

Goood luckk!! i'm so gladd i'm done with organic.. for now! I think the major thing, than, is the interview and the 5-10 presentation. I heard that they know from tht personal presentation if we should get in or not. I'm so excited, yet nervous.

I'm so nervous about the interview. Do you guys have information on the RC/WT? Is it going be like the reading comprehension (multiple choice style) and writing sample on the PCAT?

No, it's not like that. In the RC/WT, you get a scientific article, which you have to summarize. That's all - shouldn't be too hard.

Does anyone know if we are allowed to bring stuff with us for the 5-10 min presentation??

As each day passes by, I get more and more nervous about the interviews!

20 more days for us!

I'll have 12 days after my exams to practice.

Grrr... I only have TWO days to practice for interviews after my last exam 😡

Life's so unfair lol 😛

p.s. good luck on the rest of your exams!

So what kind of things are you guys thinking of preparing for the presentation ?
