Fingers crossed here! Probably a long shot to get off the MD list, but you never know I guess.

Ok, I'm having a senior moment. Where do we go to check our @vt.edu email?

If you go to gmail.com, you can then put in your VT email and password that you chose. After that it should send you to the 2 factor log-in. Once you do the 2 factor, you should be able to get into it!

Anyone know how far the IS waitlist moved last year?
I can't say anything about last year or the MD list in general, but two years ago the VA list moved at least 4 spots between the 2 times I checked to see where I was

And now am #5. It feels so close but so far. I assume it depends on how many people dropped off the waitlist and how many were called off the waitlist.

A friend of mine that went to VMCVM (also from MD, we went to the same undergrad but years apart) told me she didn’t get off the waitlist till about a week before class started. I know that isn’t necessarily a common thing but still, you just don’t know what will happen. I’m rooting for ya!!

This gets said every year but someone in my class got pulled off DURING ORIENTATION. I don’t know the probability, but it can happen.

Oh my goodness! Wow! I just wish I knew if it was mostly that they already went through the waitlist yesterday, or if people pulled themselves off. Completely nerve wreaking.

Does anyone know how much the VA waitlist has moved so far?

Do we need to purchase a stethoscope for first year?

Does anyone know if the in-state waitlist typically moves any after decision day? As of this morning, I am sitting at #2 for VA. It feels too close to not be at least a little hopeful that something will open up but I also imagine most (if not all) of the people who would turn down their in-state offer have already done so.

Movement it pretty slow for in-state, especially for VA. At this point I would assume that the class is full for IS, and that movement is unlikely.

Anything is possible, though. People have been pulled off the waitlist as late as orientation week. So prepare yourself to apply again, but know that there's a small chance that you could be accepted at the last minute.

Make sure you do a file review if you haven't already - word from admissions is that nearly everyone waitlisted following an interview gets accepted the next year if they get feedback and work on any interview weaknesses.

Thanks for the input! I actually have an offer to CSU already, which I am pretty excited about. But that in-state tuition is tempting.....

I am in the same boat. Now at #5 on the Maryland Waitlist and freaking out. Guess we will see.

I backed out of my CSU interview because I was freaking out about getting to both in the same weekend--you have dedication!! Which I'm sure is just one of the reasons they accepted you :)

Thank you! It was certainly a long weekend! It helped that I was already living in Blacksburg (currently completing my MS) so I had my interview at VM early Saturday and then flew out to CO for an interview at CSU on Sunday.

A post on IG stated that the class has been seated just in case anyone else was wondering about waitlist movement.

Thanks! While highly unlikely, there is always the chance of people dropping over the summer. If not, we’ve always got next year!

While this doesn't happen super often, I do know of people giving their seats back up later in the summer, and one of my classmates was offered a spot just a few weeks before orientation

Question, do most vet students take their personal pets to the VMCVM community practice for wellness stuff or use a vet in town?

I know of students that do either, it's really whichever you prefer! I would recommend calling around to get ideas of different price ranges and asking if drop-off appointments are an option if you get in a time crunch but still need to get your pet seen.

Any idea if the community practice is generally able to get a pet in soon-ish if it’s something urgent but not ER urgent?

If you are willing to do a drop off appt, then yes. I've gotten in same day or next day for things through community practice. You'll drop off in the morning and they'll fit in your pet wherever they end up with a hole in their schedule.

You can also usually get an drop off appointment within a week if it's for general non urgent stuff (vaccines, yearly physical exam, etc).

If you want to be there for the appointment, it's usually about 3 weeks out. Specialist services can take quite a bit longer.

School will definitely work with you, especially community practice. One of my doggos is a frequent flyer and as long as you’re willing to drop off magic can happen. Definitely get to know the techs and form a good relationship with them, they make the calendar.

Hi everyone! Thanks to all of you who came to our Zoom session on student leader/club life yesterday! We are very excited to have you all on campus in the Fall! To those of you who are on the wait list, stay optimistic! I had friends accepted the day before school and even one week into school. Even if you don't get in, remember you're all still awesome and you have to keep pressing forward! That just means the next cycle you'll know how to rise above the rest :) Let us know if there is any specific questions you might have about campus, school, life, etc.

Stay safe!

Hi there! I had the same feeling so I talked to Dr. Pelzer about it and she told me that we need to be in Blacksburg by August even if we’re going to take some classes online

Even if social distancing is still a thing here in the fall, my guess is they'll do something hybrid.

Maybe lectures at home and lab in smaller groups with ppe required. The anatomy lab has at least twice as much space as needed for first year labs, so they could easily spread your class out if needed and have you work in groups of two instead of four for dissections.

They are doing some make-up surgery labs this summer for our class, so clearly they have figured out something acceptable for in-person lab instruction even if people have to be closer than 6 feet (no real way to do surgery instruction from a distance). Don't worry too much - the administration here is working really hard on figuring out ways that they can get us what we need, including in person instruction, even if they have to make some modifications.

Will we receive a book list? Or are there any books that any of you found particularly helpful for first year?

There are no required textbooks - everything you need to know will be provided in your lecture notes. The syllabi will have suggested reading - all of those books will be on reserve in the vet med library.

The only semi required / strongly recommended book is the dissection guide:

Guide to the Dissection of the Dog, 8th edition by Evans and de Lahunta

I DEFINITELY recommend getting the dissector, you can get it as a PDF but I think a physical copy is much easier to work with in lab. Keep an eye out on Facebook, you might encounter some 3rd or 4th years trying to get rid of theirs. Also the older version (7th ed. I think) is perfectly fine, there are minimal differences from the newest one plus you can get it cheaper

A couple others that I and some of my classmates have found to be helpful:
Pasquini's Anatomy of Domestic Animals: Systemic and Regional Approach - nice because it has species other than just the dog, it's a little pricey but has been worth it for me, it has some great illustrations and explains things nicely
Saunders Veterinary Anatomy coloring book - I think is only like $20 on Amazon (mine was gifted to me), fantastic if you're a visual learner and like color-coding, plus it can be a fun way to trick yourself into studying when you don't feel like it ;)

This is definitely a YMMV because I hands down preferred a digital copy over a physical book in lab. One person stayed clean (or you put the tablet in a ziplock) but it was much easier for me to have all of the relevant images handy from the pdf rather than flipping through.

No required book list but books that have saved my butt are
  1. Thrall's Textbook of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging
  2. Duncan and Prasse's Veterinary Lab Medicine (Clinical Pathology)
  3. Veterinary Analgesia and Anesthesia
  4. Merck Veterinary Manual
  5. Slatter's Fundamentals of Veterinary Ophthalmology
  6. Greene's Infectious Diseases of the Dog and Cat
Did I want to spend money on them? No, but they were SO helpful and I plan on keeping them for practice. So highly recommend you invest in at least a few textbooks. Sometimes certain professors make no sense to me so being able to read it in a different way with pictures helps me
