Waitlist Support Group

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Actually, in April we can see where our waitlisted students are holding acceptances (as quoted by @chenzt).
Yeah, that's why I was wondering, since adcoms can see which waitlistees have no acceptances, if they are preferred over those with at least 1...

It seems to me like they would because A) its more fair to candidates (though i'm not sure how much adcoms care about fairness, life aint fair, etc.) and 2) they are guaranteed to matriculate, or at least extremely more likely to, vs. someone who sends a Letter of Intent (since as many of the adcom posters on SDN have stated that LoIs are usually regarded as BS).

But then those with no acceptances might be less desirable candidates than those with at least 1 acceptance to begin with? Idk just speculating the possibilities

@gyngyn mentioned that at this point, yield protection is secondary. So sounds like they will take the best available with a good chance of attending based on how the dean of admissions feels. Doesn't necessarily have to be someone without an acceptance.

It's not "more fair" to candidates since the empty seat in the end WILL go to someone without an acceptance. It might involve a convoluted chain reaction where school A poaches school B, who poaches school C etc etc until finally someone without an acceptance gets the call.

Good points, makes sense! Thanks

How big of a storm is this going to be? People seem really excited about tomorrow, but is there really going to a ton of Oct. 15th-esque movement?

@gyngyn I know you only have experience with one school but how does waitlist movement typically go at this point (at least at your school)? Does the waitlist start moving a lot after 5/15 and then slow down to a trickle after a few weeks or does it slowly and steadily move all summer? Again, I know this is variable from school to school but I'm interested in your experience.

From what I've seen, the 16th seems to be a bigger movement day than the 15th (and maybe even more at the beginning of the next work week).
I would imagine that most of the movement will happen next week since it will take some time for the deans to determine how many spots they have available and who they want filling in those spots to maintain a balanced class. Its going to be a long weekend. I'm really rooting for everyone on this thread, especially those with no acceptances.

We have already calculated the number of excess students who would show up if school started today (given where they are holding multiple acceptances). There is a cushion of excess students to accomodate the inevitable pilfering that is likely to start in the next few days. When the buffer students have been pilfered we will begin to call waitlist students. The amount of time necessary to comsume the buffer students varies. Once waitlist movement starts it tends to be steady and then very slow, not at all like the October 15th bolus.

When I called my 2 wait listed schools and asked some general questions (i.e. not specific to my application), both asked for my full name when I finished asking. (i.e. "Just to make sure, what's your name again?") I wonder if they take notes of my call or questions I asked. Does anyone encountered same situation or have insights on what they do?

Bro, they are going to tell the admission commitee that you keep calling with stupid questions! You are done !

Lol. I really appreciate the use of the word "pilfer." If medical schools are pilfering pirates, then that makes us applicants chests full of treasure! 🙂
You'd better believe it!

Yep, this happened to me too. The person asked me to spell out my name and looked me up, only to then not share very much information about where I stand.

:help:

First acceptance off the waitlist! What a grueling process....however, the wait paid off, and I learned a few things about myself that I didn't before.

In light of finishing Breaking Bad this past weekend, and grabbing my first acceptance--this is for you, med school admissions:

Yes yes YES. I love this song. Breaking Bad only made it better.

Congrats on the acceptance!!

Congratulations!

Already posted this on the Dartmouth thread but thought it would be appropriate here as well:

Quite fitting this was put out today on Doonesbury. Also funny that this was first published 40 years ago and still applies so well today...

Keep believing!

Remember everyone - hope for the best, expect the worst. If you haven't made or followed through on back-up plans do so! Trust me you will feel better if you have a plan in place vs. just hoping and waiting.

With that said, keep hope alive and remember it's a long summer. Some people get accepted off waitlists a week before orientation. As long as you have a back-up plan in place you will be OK either way!

Good luck!!!

Watching people get accepted off of waitlists is painful. Despair has set in.

Agreed, especially since most seem to already have acceptances elsewhere. I'm trying to keep busy by filling out my 2015 AMCAS, which is sort of depressing, but I don't want to end up interviewing in March/April again like I did this cycle.

Anyone else neurotically checking their waitlisted schools website to see if they might get in? Or constantly refreshing their email in hopes of something happening. Or preparing to offer a sacrifice in the hopes of getting off a waitlist? Anyone :heckyeah:

+1, trying to remain optimistic/busy to avoid thinking about it, but it's so damn tough :/

+2

+1, minus that last part. 😉

+1, especially the last part.

+1 But I really don't think anything is going to happen with both of mine wait lists today anyway. It seems like that they won't start calling until May 15th is over. :luck:

Letter of intent sent! That is my 3rd 'update' in the past 3 months to my top choice. I feel like I've done everything I can without coming off as clingy/desperate, the rest is in fate's hands now. Good luck all.

how much are you guys changing up previous work/activities descriptions and personal statements? would it be ok to rewrite portions of the personal statement or do schools expect a full redraft?

I am a reapp, my personal statement was 80% the same - literally changed one paragraph and a few sentences elsewhere - and I had a fairly successful reapp cycle. Unless you feel your first essay was garbage, I think it's a waste of valuable time to redo the whole thing.

I am basically using AMCAS 2015 as a distraction away from current wait list situations. Did you use the same LORs or have new ones? I am currently trying to figure this out.
I already have six letters stored at my school's prehealth office along with the committee letter; my plan is to have a more recent one to add to the letter package along with six other old letters.( 1 year old).

I had 6 letters. 4 were unchanged from my first cycle, and 2 were slightly edited by me (cool bosses at work let me do this). The writers were all the same as my first cycle.

GL. Reapplying was very humiliating and humbling, but it's all worth it once you get that first acceptance.

edit: in my experience, top 20's are biased against reapps, so keep that in mind when choosing which schools to apply to. If a top 20 you applied to during your first cycle was a 'reach' school, it might save you a lot of time to not apply to them in during your reapp cycle.

I'm still torn on whether to start the AMCAS app again... on 5 WLs and have an interview for a conditional acceptance program in "late May or early June". I'm not sure on whether I need to take a post bacc year for my slightly below average GPA, or if I should just reapply right away but shift my school choices, since I applied pretty top heavy last cycle. Ugh decisions!

I am also a reapp and had basically redid my whole app from the last time I applied. New statement, new activity descriptions, 2 new letters, and twice the number of schools. I had also done a postbac so my GPA was different as well. For some of you guys, it might just be a matter of a more timely application, for others like myself, it required a completely new app for me to have success this cycle. Hope the waitlist works out for you guys tho, cause reapplying sucks.

Yeah my PS was mostly the same, but I completely rewrote all my activity descriptions to sell myself a bit better. And the best piece of advice possible, SUBMIT EVERYTHING AS EARLY AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE. Seriously, I feel 80% of my reapp success was due to this reason alone. Have your AMCAS in day 1-3, and have all secondaries submitted by the end of July.

Anyone else have no acceptances and really hoping for this waitlist game to pan out?

I have no acceptances and this is my third round. I cannot afford to apply again even with FAP as I cannot retake the discounted MCAT fee.

Last year was such a mess with turnover times, I'd try to get it submitted within the first ten minutes.

Dude, a 1.0 is a little less than slightly below average... your 45 MCAT totally makes up for it though! 😉

Yeah, I submitted within the first 20 minutes this past cycle and it still took like 1-2 weeks to get verified lol

I know its inappropriate to withdraw from a school you have been accepted to if you told them it was your first choice. Right now I'm on the waitlist for a school that I updated telling them it was my first choice and that I would attend without a doubt. However due to changing personal issues, I must withdraw from that school. Is it appropriate to do that cus I haven't been accepted yet?? :scared:

You should not have done that in the first place. However, withdraw immediately.

I don't see anything wrong with this, as long as you haven't yet been accepted. For example, if I move all the way to another city to start school 2 weeks before orientation and decide I am there to stay, then a school I previously sent a letter of intent to should understand that I've made a decision to give up on them as long as I withdraw while on the waitlist. Just make sure you withdraw quickly so you aren't stuck with the acceptance.
