Well this is stated by someone who calls D-town their FIRST home and from someone who is leaving their pad on the beach in SoCal to come on home and get down to business. Finally.

C'mon Lotanna, you've got to feel the love here.

Besides, your gonna be WAAY up there in East Lansing/Grand Rapids.
Dodging cows instead of bullets.

p.s.
I'll send you my G-Unit bullet proof vest if it makes you feel any better.

Go Blue!
but go to State for the hotties.

love and kisses,
911Med

GO SPartans!!!
The D isnt bad, I wasnt shot last night, or Sat night, neither was i shot last week. Like every big city, just need to watch ur back, and use common sense at all times. Then again this is comin from someone who spent her childhood in a city that is considered worse than NYC in terms of fast paced life, and worse than detroit in regards to bloody crimes...I'll pass on the vest tho 😛

how late do the clubs close in Detroit????? Not that I'm planning on being a party animal. But you know ya boy will need a lil R & R. 😀

All Michigan clubs close at 2am, when they stop serving liquor 🙁

The Reggae spot, Trenchtown which is actually located right across from med schl area/Harper hospital is an afterset and is 2am-5am, opens only on Saturday nights. Its pretty good, though usually more guys than females.

2a.m. 😕 that sucks. Don't think i'll be frequenting the reggae spot unless the ratio was the other way around. But thanks for the info. Ur (lotanna) not going to wayne in the fall correct?????

Last call is usually 1:35 or so.
Doors at 2:00am.
All the clubs are pretty spread out unless your in Royal Oak - then there is a bit of a "Adams Morgan" or Bourbon Street feel - not much, but slightly.
Detroit is infamous for its after hours scene. A bit seedy and clandestine, but hey, I suppose people like it that way.
Birmingham has a few nice places clustered together as well.
Oh yeah, and that club you saw in "8-Mile" - it really exists - just not as dramatic.

nope not going to wayne, just have friends there, and i'm in detroit a lot. I've a list of events/places to frequent, but its mostly summer stuff right now.
yeah trenchtown is tight but because of the time you just dont see as many females. I'm female so of course I like the ratio though 😛

hey last friday they had a Detroit Loop thing, where u pay $10 and get to go to 17bars, from Hardrock cafe to the Roof. They had a shuttle every 15mins to take u to the other places, from 7pm-3am
i was supposed to go, to do an article for a local paper, and so it would have been free but i couldnt make it. I'm not sure when next they'll do it again

I need help looking for an apt. Anyone have suggestions??????? I've looked at the pavillion (that's my primary choice) but I know there's got to be other stuff around there.

Looking for a studio..... $400 to $500, close to campus, covered parking, decent living conditions.

Hey Brad,
I would check into the lofts down by the water.
They are REALLY nice and I know that there are a few enclaves of med students living in them. I'm not sure about the studio, but they are close to the med school.
You might want to see if you can get access to any type of bulletin board thru the SOM website.
Maybe surf over to the MD forum and see if there are any WSU's over there.

Lotanna - all joking aside, Detroit is really up and coming, it will be a while, but things are changing. Five years ago you would have NEVER heard of any Detroit Loop ever. Now if I can just ace this MS degree in the SOM and get a spot!

To say that the amount of crime in Detroit is similar to other big cities just isn't true. Just because you have pride in the city doesn't mean you need to be idealistic about the current levels of homocide, armed robbery, etc... A lot of people recently freaked out about the fireworks shooting, but in my opinion the actions of one person can't be equated to the behavior of an entire city. However, look at yesterday, where 5 people were murdered within 6 hours, all seperate incidents, in a city of less than a million people. That is not normal, or acceptable. Not to mention that a shootout occurred at one party over a piece of chicken. Detroit has some serious problems it needs to face regarding crime levels, and passing it off as "just like any big city", only allows the existing mentality to continue.

u decide for urself, i decide for myself.
4get the quote of a city less than a million people cause it makesit seems as if those who left the city to live in the subs dont come back to do dirt in the city.
Anyhow its all good.

Compared to other cities, the people in the subs don't come back to do dirt in the city. Having lived in the burbs my entire life, the only reason 95% of people go to detroit are sporting events, casinos, or fireworks.

I believe they were all on the west side, not downtown.

Read the article here it's a trip.

still waiting for my aid package. have you all gotten yours or still waiting?

U can check it on the pipline link http://lumprod.wayne.edu/cp/home/loginf located on the med school home pg. You should've gotten a password and ID in the mail by now. If not you should call the office and inquire about it. They sent them out probably a month ago (at least in my case). Anyway if you filed out your FAFSA it should be on there.

I got mine some time ago. You need to have access to pipeline to know, they send an email to your wayne account informing you that you have received an award. You then need to check the financial aid section of pipeline to accept the award and fill out the MPN.

Ok, So I am all geared up to move this next week to Des Moines (osteopathic) and I get a e-mail this morning that I have been pulled off the waitlist at Wayne.

I already have an apartment leased, deposit paid, etc at DMU.
But I own a house in Roseville and Wayne is only 20 min away. Also the cost is about half that of DMU.

I know that I would get a quality education at both institutions, but I really want to be a surgeon. Which leads me to believe that Wayne might be the better choice.

Any thoughts?

You own a house in "Rockin' Roseville?" - right on.
My vote would be go with Wayne. - The price that you pay to cancel the lease and negate all commitments to DMU will pale in comparison to what you would save commuting in from your own house and paying 1/2 tuition.

I am unclear on the whole DO vs. MD things and don't even want to go there.

That is your bag baby.

If it is any consolation, I'm leaving sunny La Jolla, CA and returning to Detroit for their med school post-bac program in hopes that I can get into WSU Med. (Looking for a good inner city trauma program) and I own a house in equally rocking Belleville, MI and will be commuting in every snowy, cold, and rainy day.

Des Moines is nice - one of the PIs I did research with went there and is very prominent in that community.

So... I say just go with your educated gut feeling. Decide. Don't ever look back or say "why didn't I..."

Congrats! Wow - a really nice email to get!

Although it may hurt my chances of getting in (im on the waitlist too) I would say go to Wayne. It sounds like you've already made up your mind anyway.

Thats funny that your acceptance came in an email. When i talked to the secretary last month she said it would be a phone call. How long did they give you to decide?

And most of all, congratulations!!!

She said that they mailed the information yesterday, and that I would have two weeks to decide. I won't need that long, but class starts in two weeks so I guess that is the maximum amount of time they can allot at the moment.

Last year I was on the waitlist as well, and obviously was not taken off...This year I have a couple of acceptances and I have to choose...dumb fate.

Have you guys all received the reg materials they mailed out on July 6th? I haven't, and I'm leaving for Detroit on Monday morn. 😱 I guess if I still haven't gotten the package by tomorrow, I could just get another one from the school once I get there.

For those of you who have received it, what's in the package?

just a schedule of the week and some forms........like physical, and data sheet, stuff like that.

Hello, I will be joining you all in August. My husband and I live in Roseville, twenty minutes from campus, and we are offering our services to anyone who may need a hand with moving or directions within the city and surrounding areas.

You can just PM me...and my hubby, Dave, or myself, Jenn, will get back to you as soon as we can. I am a SDN-aholic so I am on here several times a day...

See you all soon...

for bradwilkins and others flying into michigan

hey, if i remember correctly from ur posts on the wayne state thread and long dist one, u'll be at WSU, but ur girlfriend is in DC. So you might find this very helpful.

Check out Independence air, http://www.flyi.com
they just added Lansing to their airports, they'll add Metro Airport 8/15. It should take u about an hr to get to Lansing from downtown detroit.

Buy your ticket from now to Friday and fly up to Nov to DC for $29 one way. Round trip is $78(incl taxes)!!
Register for their free frew flier club, and u get $25 off 1st round trip ticket, so then it'll be $53.20! 😱

After Friday, the reg price will be $59 each way, which is $158 round trip

Hope it helps!!
and naah they arent paying me, I just like great bargains! 😀

Hey, since we are all on our way in two weeks, anyone else feel like moving up the food chain and starting a WSU 2008 on the Allopathic forum?

OH MY GOD!!! I just got accepted to Wayne this morning! Jeez, class starts Monday. How am I going to find a place to live in one week? I am freaking out!!! I think I'm going to throw up.

:scared:

Congratulations CeLo!!! How did they notify you? Im still waiting for Wayne and it sucks, but, hey, at least it will all be over by the end of this week, right? Good luck w/ everything!

They called my house. I am looking for a place to live. Pretty much everything is taken by now. If anyone has any suggestion, let me know.

Congrats CeLo -
they didn;t give you much time to prepare eh? Regardless, your in!
S-w-e-e-t.
Laz - keep your head up - keep us posted.

If its a no go - then we can plan our attack for next year admissions while dodging bullets in the hood and studying BMS.

I heard that the 8-Mile Trailer Park is especially lovely this time of year.

Congrats Celo...will be seeing you next week!!! I didn't have that much time either...only two weeks. lol. It is do-able though.

For housing info call Tracey Eady I think she's in student affairs. She has a listing of about 8 or 9 places where students live. I found a spot at Lafayette Pavilion 2 miles from school.
