WCVM or UCVM C/O 2017

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yeah I've seen the schedule but I was just wondering if anyone knew anything from experience 😛

Well, they're two completely different styles. UCVM can do all of their interviews in one day because of the MMI structure. WCVM has 3 people interviewing one person, and each interview usually takes 45-60min... it can't be done in one day.

Just got my interview invite for WCVM! Hurray! All is not lost 😀

Congrats Maplegal!! Now I'm nervous....

That's wonderful - congrats to you and everyone who have gotten an interview.

Congrats MapleGal! (EXCEPT NOW YOU HAVE RAISED MY ANXIETY LEVELS TENFOLD

HA

HA

HAAaaA :scared: )

Does anyone know if they've ALL been sent out today? They are being surprisingly EARLY this year...

I asked Sandy and she said the first round of offers were sent this morning. Whether that includes both sessions in Edmonton and Saskatoon, I don't know. I've asked in order to clarify, but that certainly sounds like they're done until May now. 🙁

Darnit, I wanted to go to NZ in May! 🙁

Congrats to other WCVM interviewees! I got one today also 🙂 I was quite shocked, it is super early... are you people choosing edmonton or sask for your interview?

So they must have just done Alberta...?

So I was talking to some people because I was freaking out since I had not heard.. My friend who got accepted last year (from BC) said that the Alberta invites went out earlier then the rest last year too because they were having to keep up with UCVM and that the rest of the provinces were a couple weeks later. Also, she was asking her friends who are also applying this year from SK and they had not heard anything yet. Thankfully, this lowered my anxiety levels by crazy amounts! Congrats to those who got an interview!!

Yay!! Congrats! Are you interviewing in S'toon? We should meet up!

Thanks everyone! It was super early this year - I was totally caught off guard but when I realized what was going on, I totally scared my dogs with my victory dance. Haha. I can't imagine what my performance will do to them if I actually get in this year!

I think I'm gonna road trip to Edmonton this year...while it was cool to see the facilities last year, Edmonton's a quicker drive, but I haven't completely made up my mind yet. Confirmation's due Monday, so I have some time to figure it out.

Holding thumbs for everyone 🙂

Congrats guys! I am quite jello 🙂

I am trying not to panic and stress out too much at the moment. Last year I got an invite two days after people from Alberta got theirs ( I am from Alberta btw). I am trying to tell myself that they scheduled 10 days for interviews, they can easily go through 7 or 8 applicants a day. Even at 6 a day plus the second round of interviews, I can haz one? :scared: I guess I'll find out on Friday! Fingers crossed!

Heads up for those checking their emails in BC. I'm from BC and I just got an interview offer this morning from WCVM!

Congrats!

My entire day at work will now be spent checking my email ...

EDIT: Would you mind sharing your average so I have a rough idea of how far off I am? 😛

I've received confirmation that all 1st round offers have been made unless an interview is declined (quite rare, I imagine). So looks like we still have a couple of months to sweat it out. 🙁

eep you might not want to know....4.0 (the rest of my credentials (experience, volunteer) aren't nearly as impressive as other people I know)--> more evidence that interview offers should be based on something other than grades!!! I know so many amazing people that deserve interviews as well

Congrats!

sorry! The first time I forgot to press quote...I posted my response above

So Does that mean all of BC is done too?

WELP, here's hoping for the second round again.

Also I can finally stop checking my email continuously.

Jumpergirl, you're from Sask?! Originally or did you move here for residency?

Am I right in assuming that if you are still finishing the required courses this semester then you will only get a second round interview?

Nope! I was finishing my last semester and got a first round interview last year.

Hey everyone, I need some advice from all you WCVM'ers. I didn't get a first round interview this year and I'm not sure if I'll get a second round. The thing is my first year wasn't that great, I got two D's, I was thinking of retaking those classes because I know I can do well in them now, but does anyone know how WCVM views retakes? Do they average between your two grades or do they just use the better one? Thanks in advance!

Hello! Just thought I'd pop in and say hi, although I've been trying really hard to stay away from this whole forum.

Has anyone actually gotten confirmation that all BC interviews have been sent out? Because I was looking back at last year, and it seem some got interviews on a Friday, but I got mine on the next Monday... Soooo I'm still holding out some hope for tomorrow morning. But please, if anyone has confirmation that this isn't going to happen, let me know so I can stop holding my breath!

I retook a course, but it was older than 10 years. A friend of mine retook a course a few times. I'm not sure how they calculate retakes, it's probably best to email Heather and ask.

They average the two grades. If you're not going to literally jump from a 60 to a 90, it's probably better for you to just take other courses that you can nail. Your best full year takes up 1/3 the grade calculation, so... it's something to consider.

Hey Nuttyclub, thanks for the answer, I feel pretty confident that I could get an A in the class, but I guess I need to ask Heather on what to do. I need to figure out how the D's transfer over to % because I'm at Uvic and we still use letter grades (A=88, A=82 etc.). Thanks for the help.

Yeah. No worries. It's probably best to talk to Heather anyways, because I know the BC pool is quite competitive. She may be able to advise you as to what might be the more valuable course of action. 👍

Hey everyone,

I've been creeping this thread for a while and decided to finally make my first post!
I've received an invite for UCVM and am waiting for my invite (second round hopefully??) for WCVM.

My vet reference for UCVM is actually going to be a part of the MMI's, so I asked her for some tips. She obviously couldn't say much, but said "know every aspect of the veterinary profession." So I was thinking we could all brain storm together and come up with some aspects that are important and might come up in an MMI question?

Have you tried googling sample MMI questions? I just recently went through an MMI for something completely different, although I'm sure there would be a lot of overlap. If you can find ones for medicine, they are probably applicable, and you can likely tweak the scenarios a bit to imagine how they would be presented and relevant to veterinary medicine too. From what I gather, MMI questions aren't necessarily designed with a correct answer, but to assess how you logically work your way to whatever answer you give.

Yes they definitely want to see that you can logically think things through. I've heard the MMI's for UCVM are actually quite different from MMI's done at other schools. I have a friend who just did an MMI for a different program and she said they were given scenarios about current events and other things that don't relate to her field at all. They were also asked questions about each situation if there is time left and they had finished speaking/explaining their answer. Apparently with our MMI's, they will all be animal/veterinary related, and once you're done explaining your answer that's it.

Welcome to the group!

Without giving away MMI questions exactly... I would recommend reading some of Bernard Rollins' veterinary ethics. He writes some for the CVJ and has a whole book compiling some older ones.

Awesome, thanks LeilaFay!

Haha I'm exactly the same!

On a side note, does anyone know what the class/lab etc schedule is like in first year? Are all the classes grouped together (ie we would attend from 8 to 3pm type of idea) or would we have breaks in between?
