WCVM/UCVM c/o 2018

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So last night I put down Carol Gelette as the supervisor name and I got an application approval email this morning, so I'm guessing that she's the person we're supposed to use.

We don't have to bring our own scrubs for school, right?

Hi! I think it's all the previous degrees. See you guys SOON!!! So excited 🙂 Oh, and I remember seeing info on computers and boots etc in the student manuals for previous years, but I did not see anything in ours?
Thanks!! But do we put the DVM degree too? (It is expected, after all...)

@mmmelini I did. I figure it's the one that makes you eligible for membership 🙂

@Cracker.Jack. thanks, I'll put her down and see if it works.

@LdT I assume that's the type of thing they were talking about when they said we'd be getting more details on some things by email. *shrugs* All I've bought so far in that department is a pair of steel-toed rubber boots (I figure you can't go wrong with those) and I do want to upgrade my laptop before school starts. It's a few years old already, and I could just see it dying in fourth year and taking all of my notes from the past 3.5 years with it....

On the house hunting front, we'd found a mobile home that we thought was perfect when we were in Calgary at the beginning of the week. Right price, right location, everything we wanted. Then we got the application to live in the park..... They wanted us to give them our SIN numbers and sign a blanket consent to access everything about our financial history (and I do mean everything, the list of what the consent covers is insane), and share it with whoever they deem necessary, at any time, for any purpose they deem necessary, without needing to notify us. Umm yeah... don't think so! So since that isn't going to happen, and we likely won't qualify for a mortgage on a regular house with me mostly not working during the school term, we've talked it over and are now looking for a rental that will allow our pets and child. We emailed a few yesterday, one of which sounds especially awesome, so PLEASE everyone cross your fingers!!!

Many thanks to whoever it was that mentioned rentfaster earlier! I'd never heard of it before, and it seems quite awesome and like it might just save our bacon....

@dls116 , I was told we don't need scrubs, as we wear scrubs provided for us in the teaching hospital and then they stay there and are washed on site (to prevent spread of disease I assume, it was the same thing at the zoo!). Which is too bad because I have a billion pairs of super cute scrubs!

fingers crossed for you @Squeaksmom!

On a side note, does anyone know when tuition is due for UCVM? I've found on the U of C website that fees are due Sept 22 or somewhere around there, but at my old school fees and tuition were separate costs and had separate due dates. Sept 22 seems awfully late to be paying for the semester. I could pay for it now I guess, but I received 3 entrance scholarships so I don't really want to pay yet until those go through. That way I don't end up mistakenly over or under paying and then having to make another trip to the cashier to fix it.

Thanks @Cracker.Jack. ! All I can find on fee deadlines is Sep 26. It seems late to me, too, but at the school I'm coming from the tuition and fees had a single due date. I hope it's either right or I find out in time so I don't wind up paying late!

Hey UCVM, our first course is up on Desire 2 Learn!

In first year there's not really many occasions that you would need scrubs; in fact, zero. Unless you wear them under your lab coat in the anatomy lab, basically all you need is a lab coat (a dirty one if you choose to wear one in the anatomy lab), coveralls, and a lab coat for physiology lab (most people upon receiving their white coat just wore those). Even if you do cageside rounds, you just need a white coat. I brought scrubs to keep in my locker in the even that we had really dirty anatomy labs - and some of them are, but others just wore their coveralls.

I was hoping they would assume that one 🙄 but a gentle hint will probably not hurt!

I already upgraded my laptop, the old one now rests with the dinosaurs! Hopefully those promised emails come soon!!! And good luck house-hunting. For sure harder when you have a furry family member!

do any currently WCVM students have any advice on whether or not to buy a printer?
I have plans to purchase a B&W laser printer for ease of printing, but that will depend on what is needed.
I personally will be printing out lecture slides (if given) and I will be hand writing notes over them (call me old fashioned)

But in addition, are there lots of paper- based assignments that need to be submitted?

Some profs will give you lecture slides in advance, and others wont. Some also like to give you lecture notes an hour before class so I found it easiest to just take them on my computer (so I could download them in the lecture room) with extra paper beside me for drawings and diagrams. But I found my strategy changed with each prof…. it was really hard to figure out how to take notes! I feel like it changes for each prof (and considering you have three profs per class sometimes, it can be tricky). You can print in the library for a fee, maybe feel out how much you're printing there and decide later if you want a printer?

As for assignments, I think we only had 3 or 4 all year. A minimal consideration compared to how many notes you will be taking 😛 (lots and lots and lots….)

Call me crazy for noticing but..on our class schedule they have us in class until 5:30pm on the night of our white coat ceremony which I assume isn't right? Doesn't it start at 6ish??

UCVM timetables are up on D2L!! The way it changes around, it looks like I'm going to need a bigger planner book this year!

@Cracker.Jack. I see on the other thread you've checked out the bookstore. Is our stuff in the main bookstore or the medical one?

I'm not sure. I looked around the main bookstore and couldn't find any but they had lots of aisles blocked off because they were full of boxes and workers were stocking the shelves. I buy all my text books online anyway so I wasn't too worried about finding them when I was there.

Textbooks are in the Medical bookstore for us.

If you want Dukes, chances are there will be a ton of people looking to sell. 🙂 Though I never cracked it.

Actually, I did once and shut it after a couple minutes. 😛

Thanks @Escalla ! A friend of mine who is a recent grad is selling me her Duke's and Dyce, as well as a couple of others. I say three cheers for friends!! 😀

@Cracker.Jack. for the driver registration what department did you put? I put vet medicine as the faculty, obviously, but it won't take it without a department and I'm not really sure which one is appropriate. Clinical practice? Dean's office? Student services? Something else?

@Squeaksmom I'm trying to remember, but I think I put clinical practice as I assumed that would kind of be why we would be going driving somewhere.

Ok cool thanks. I'll take another crack at it tonight. I was like "field course"... oh wait, that's not one of the choices....

I think Student Services. But I'm pretty sure they'll just fix it if you put the wrong thing 😉

I wound up picking clinical practice too. I figured it was the closest. I guess if I did it wrong they'll either fix it or tell me to.

I think it went well. I should hear by the end of the week. *stressy!*

I can't wait to be done work and get moved, one more week.....

Any WCVMers doing the Colour Me Rad race on Sept 6? @thenuttyclub I know you're doing the Tough Mudder!

I hope everyone's getting settled in and ready for the first week! Enjoy it! See you around WCVMers!

Hi is there any WCVM 2019 applicants!

I was hoping there would be a thread for UCVM/WCVM c/o 2019 hopefuls but haven't seen one yet!
