Western 2024-2025 (c/o 2029 hopefuls)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys! I was reading some of your posts and I think I wanted to say some things to hopefully ease your minds for the week.

We had to convert to online for a few days due to poor air quality, fires, and students needing to evacuate. This may have caused a delay in interview invites, etc. Like most people have said, interviews typically don’t end until March ish. But it changes every year so who knows.

Unless you got a denial letter then you are still the running. No news is good news. I will keep saying that till the day I die lol. 😂😂
Dont want to be mean to ask, but I thought all the release needs to be before the April something?

Could you post a screenshot? I feel like that date seems wrong as decisions are due before that
Is western “rolling” admission? If so, the April 15 deadline doesn’t apply to them!

I dont think Western does rolling admission.
I believe they do. In a email they sent me in June it says admissions are rolling. However they say that those who sent in the applications closer to the VMCAS deadline are still equally considered for the seats.

Historically, do decisions come out on a rolling basis as interviews are on-going on by a certain date?

Last year, they sent the rejection on one day and acceptance on one day

That is definitely odd. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the email? Here is what they said:
"Admissions is rolling, so early submission is key to priority review of your application and preventing delays."

June seems crazy late rolling or not. Usually rolling admissions schools fill their seats early. I can’t remember if it was western or Midwestern but 2-3 years ago they had filled their seats by like november. So seems a bit strange and maybe they’re changing their process? No clue but I wish schools would just be more transparentz

I was emailed that decisions would most likely be sent out end of February to early March. I understand rolling through April but June seems really late for interviews. Although I guess I would rather interview late then never 🤷‍♀️

When did you receive the email?

It's looked like it just for the deadline to submit through VMCAS, and they just reviewed your application for interview?

I was looking through the DVM 2024/2025 catalog on the WesternU website and came across this statement:

"Candidates who are deemed qualified after file review and interview are ranked based on file review and interview scores, and the class is selected by lottery from those ranking in the top 75% of qualified candidates."

I know that it is commonly said that getting into vet school is like winning a lottery just because you never know what the school is exactly looking for in their applicants in that specific year at that time (just like when applying to undergrad) but I didn't realize that WesternU actually chooses their class based on a lottery system. It's making me a bit uneasy that in the end it all does come down to pure luck whether or not you are waitlisted or put into a class. Does anyone maybe have any insight on this or what are other's thoughts? I found this on page 13 of WesternU's PDF for their DVM 2024/2025 catalog that can be found on their website.

Last year, I heard because of the NALVE score, they're more strict about the grades and everything.

I’m surprised that they come right out and say they do this 😅 It seems like most schools keep any details of their decision-making process under lock and key.

Midwestern this year sent out the acceptance without an interview, so I guess everything changed now. If you're good and lucky enough, you get in, I assumed

Yeah, between Midwestern dropping the acceptances without interview and Tennessee throwing in a screening interview for some applicants with no explanation of how they decided who needed one, I’ve kind of given up on knowing what to expect from anybody.

If they send out letters as late as March, does anyone know if there is even an opportunity to revisit before the Apr 15 deposit deadline?

I am not sure, you might have to reach out to them to see if they have a campus visit days. I emailed asking when decisions will be released since they extended interviews till end of May to early June and they said that final decisions can be released at anytime. I don't know what this means in terms of decisions being released in March. I think they are rolling for this cycle? But I still haven't received any updates to my application.

In the little interview orientation book on the website, it says if you haven’t heard a decision from them by March, to reach out to admissions. They didn’t mention anything at my interview yesterday about decisions, but my guess is we will get them around the end of February.

Thank you! Yeah that's kind of weird if all the other schools agree to have the deposit due by mid April...

I feel terrible about my interview ): felt myself rambling
I say try not to worry about it now. They expect you to be nervous, so it’s not the end of the world to not be perfect. I’ve heard from plenty of people who were sure they bombed their interview but ended up accepted. Congrats on having it over with!

Hello! I am currently spiraling and looking for any advice 😭. I have not received the “your application has been sent to the committee for review” email people have mentioned on here but I did get the email about the scholarship. I know my GPA is slightly above the class average and I have a lot of hours in a lot of different areas of vet med. I haven’t reached out to them other than at the beginning regarding the repeated coursework form so I don’t think I’d come off as too annoying but is it appropriate? I just really want to know if I am even being looked/considered for an interview at this point given there most likely only about a month left for interviews.

I think it is okay to reach out if that is what you are leaning towards. I have reached out regarding my application to make sure they received my transcripts and during that time I also asked when interviews are expected to end. The admissions counselor said that they will be conducting interviews until May 2025, so it feels like there is plenty of time still. The wild fires in California definitely caused some delays because while the campus was not impacted, many students and faculty were!

Until May? So they're for sure gonna delay the decisions?

Western finally got back to me after I emailed them if I’m still in the running for an interview and they said my application was still under review and I should here back anytime from now-April

Im torn cause I still have to take a prereq which I don’t really want to do especially if im going to get denied. I already had my interview but I got waitlisted at WSU. Do I just take the class or pray that WSU takes me 😭

Ultimately its up to you, but I was in the same position as you last year. I know it seems so hard and you don't want to do it, but you've already worked so hard to get here you might as well give yourself the most options. Not to mention, in worst case scenario and you get rejected plus don't get off the waitlist, you'll be able to apply to both again with more experience which will hopefully help you get in. I do remember deciding whether to take the microbio requirement for this very program as well and even if I don't get this cycle, I am glad I did it. Hope this helps.

Yeah that is what I was confused about as well. I asked how this impacts decisions and they said that some people will still receive their final decisions by March - at least that is how I understood the email.

My guess of what they’re saying by all this is they’re going to send out all decisions by March—acceptances, waitlists, and denials. (This is also what it says on their website in the interview orientation packet). I think what they’re saying about going into May is for people who are waitlisted. That’s just what makes the most sense, because they can’t hold off all decisions until May/June. This is pure speculation, but I’m going to pretend for my own sanity that decisions will be released by March because I can’t sit longer than that after interviewing and not know 😭

I'm thinking of withdrawing my application to Western...as much as I wanted to go and as appealing as it is (I live in California) I emailed asking for any update and they said interview invites would go out through the end of April. Timeline wise, it doesn't make much sense to me given that we have to decide by April 15th 🙁

Yeah it makes sense! I guess we will find out shortly. I live in California so WesternU would be ideal in that sense but I am nervous about hearing interviews run until May. I hope that we receive updates soon! Best of luck on your application!

I PM'd you the email!

Did my interview today! Y’all make sure you have Zoom updated on your computers beforehand; I didn’t think of that and about died on the spot when it popped up saying it needed to update right when I was supposed to be joining the meeting. Thankfully it only took a minute or so.
Other than that, it was a pretty low-stress interview. All of my interviewers took a real interest in the questions I had for them and gave me thoughtful answers.

Hey guys I received an interview invite on 12/20/24 and interviewed with them on 1/22/25. Has anyone heard of when we may hear back on decisions if you already interviewed?

I have this question, too. My brain was mush before the interview, or I’d have remembered to ask the admissions counselors about that 😅
