Western c/o 2015 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Oh god. Wait....what? no!...I totally didn't mean that in a bad way at all!!! Our group just has a mixture of first years and new admits so to also have people that declined seemed like it would be confusing. Especially for those people trying to figure out roomate situations. I guess I was just Thinking what if someone thought they had a roomie and then when it came time to rent a place, your roomie declined the school and forgot to say anything because they were excited about their other school acceptance. ...something like that. Lol....apparently that is not how it came across...if u are attending then please come join us because the first years are awesome and so helpful. Ok. I should probably stop talking now Hahahaha. Truly I was only thinking about simplifying things. I'm already confused as to who is a first year and who is in our class haha

Tuwest....ur supposed to have my back lol u know I'm part of the welcoming crew lol

Dont worry savethewhales. It was nothing offensive to anyone. At least it didnt sound offensive. And it is completely true and i agree with you 🙂

But wait...I just realized who chatter07 and gsi924 are....say it ain't so guys! I'm just giving you a hard time....I understand the difference in tuition and staying closer to home. You both see cool though so I hope you stay in our class :xf:

LOL The more I get to you guys the more I get excited about western too. Lets see what goes down 🙂

Just on the side note: I still dont know who the sdner SN are in the FB page lol

I'm on spring break now, so trying to look into all of the apartments, computers, etc requirements before school comes back to haunt again.

I am an east coaster too, and I dont think I will be bringing a car over any time soon. Is the Helix really that expensive/unsafe? I definitely need something walking distance! Is anyone else in this situation? (or if you need a roommate, I am game as well =))

Lots of talk on the facebook group about computers too, what is everyone thinking about?

I know this is a weird question, but just saw those rankings for the schools in another thread - any reason why Western isn't on there? Any dilemma with the accreditation?

This is just a guess, but often times those ranking systems rely heavily on research and since Western isnt a research based school it would fulfill all the criteria in order to even be a part of the ranking....don't think it has anything to do with acredidation. Maybe some first years know more...

As far as the computer, each vet school has specific computer requirements. I think a lot of people would like to use the one they have versus spend money on a new one. I think there is a link to computer requirements on the admitted students web page

Even though I was accepted I had to call in today and question the reservation of spots for accepted students.I was afraid the class may have filled by now and paid all deposit, but she said thats not the case and deposits must be postmarked by the 15th and will be processed on the 16th. Also she assured me that since the opening of the program the class has never filled and they always have to go to the alternate list to fill up the class so I hope this is good news 😀

I'll be using my Macbook, but I can't imagine needing anything more than a current net/notebook with a quaint little Tegra2 processor and 4gb of RAM. Of course I'm assuming a lot, but I'm pretty sure the laptop will mainly serve as a word processing and power point workhorse.

Western recommends a core i3 at least, but that seems like a bit much to me. Although, I would spring for an i7 or quad core AMD if I were in the market for a new laptop... *drool*

So I have a question on retaking the pre-reqs...
I was taking one of the pre-reqs this quarter and I'm afraid I need to retake it again next quarter.

Does anyone know how Western views on repeated courses?

not sure what grade you are getting or when you plan to retake it but according to their site..

http://prospective.westernu.edu/veterinary/requirements

Pre-req classes have to be completed by the end of the spring term with a grade of c or better. If you are enrolled in a spring class that ends after June 1 you have to submit a grade report form that your professor has signed indicating that you are passing the class. (even for classes that are not pre-reqs)

Hey, I'm a Rutgers student and I was just wondering if anyone else who's going to Western is coming from Rutgers or somewhere else in Jersey???

I did my undergrad in Jersey - out near morrisville though. I did date someone from deal/asbury park at the time and still have lots of friends in jersey city...so I have gotten the full northern jersey experience (and quite liked it!).

Well..... for the waitlisters hopefully the list will move this year. I was accepted to UPEI atlantic veterinary and I love the school so much I am giving my spot up at western. I can't believe it. Sending the form in Monday along with an email. GOOD LUCK!!

Thanks for the heads up radio! =) Congratulations on your acceptance!!:highfive:

So from what I heard, if alternates have not been called off the list by July 29, 2011........ it is "safe to assume that they will not be matriculating with the Fall 2011 entering class"!! :uhno:

..

So I'm watching the price is right now and there are some western students in the audience. If my deferment goes through, I'm so going on the price is right next year! Who's with me??? hehe

Looks like I got a seat at Colorado State U mba/dvm program! I'll be giving up my slot at Western, so hopefully one of you on the waitlist can take advantage of that!

Cheers!

Holy crap thats amazing! Congrats

Sooo...has anyone heard if the class has officially been filled for this year? Do waitlisters (such as myself) have any hope, or should that be shelved away for the summer?

I will be giving up my spot. So hopefully that will give someone on the waitlist a chance =). GL to everyone

My deferment went through - so my space for this year is now open 🙂 hope that helps someone - and hope to see you all next year!! 😀

So this is mainly for any waitlisters that are still checking this every now and then, but advice from anyone is welcome...

When the email was sent out to waitlisters telling us FAQs and such, it said we could not do anything to help our chances of getting in as of now. However, it also said feel free to keep your application updated. I was wondering if other waitlisters were actually doing this, for instance getting ready to send off transcripts from this semester/updating hours of experience with vets you've gained since the application was due. Will they actually consider any of this information when/if waitlisters are selected? Especially since the email specifically said we couldn't do anything to change our chances of getting in? I've been trying to not think about the fact that I'm on a waitlist and just accepting it as a rejection, but a friend of mine just recently got pulled off a waitlist and now I can't stop thinking about it at all.

Also I know this has already been mentioned once, but if anyone knows anything about the number of spots left open for waitlisters in the class or if there is any open at all, feel free to share 🙂

I would definitely update with grades (if they will increase gpa) and experience. For instance... if you started volunteering at a new place or shadowing a new vet. I know that they do continue to update your app so it definitely wont hurt your chances. Especially since there is no ranking for waitlisters.....basically the dean goes in and looks a all apps. If you have done something that makes your app better then I say go for it!

Oooh goodness gracious.. Western has already started picking alternates of the list since last week! :scared:

How did you find that out, millyt?

I talked to Joanna on Tuesday to set up an appointment for app reviews and had asked about the alt. list thinking that she would have said 'no not yet', but to my surprise, she said yes! Apparently Western has been contacting alternates since last week or so. =/

If alternates don't hear from Western by the end of July..then ..

Hello, I just started at SDN but I've been observing what's been going on for a few months now. I just wanted to say don't give up! I just got an email this morning at 9:41 inviting me to become part of the class of 2015 at Western!😀 So even when you think you're out of time, keep hoping! I can't believe I made it but I know there are other people that will still be invited to join after me! Keep hoping and I hope to meet everyone in August!🙂

Congrats, zoovet2b, and thanks for the update! Still hoping for the outside chance, even though I don't think it's too likely.

Got the e-mail today from Karen! I'm in!

Marsala! It's your turn now =)

Congrats, millyt! I am happy for you!🙂

However, on my end, hope is running out, so I am going to curl up in the fetal position in the corner and eat ice cream or cry or something.

I've been doing this for the past two weeks due to personal issues. I wished it worked.🙁

Hi and congrats to all the new Western students 🙂

I am a 4th year veterinary student renting out a furnished room and private full bathroom in my condo. Located on the border between Pomona and Claremont, the condo is less than 10 minutes from campus and close enough to walk or bike to the beautiful Claremont square. The complex is quiet, gated, and safe, with a lovely pool and spa.

You will have the entire place to yourself for much of the year, as I will be on clinical rotations out of state, and my husband works out of the country. The condo does come with my three cats and small fish tank, so no pets please, sorry. I would really appreciate someone who will care for my cats and fish while I’m away, and in exchange I am willing to offer reduced rent and access to my library, fully stocked with veterinary books. I would also be willing to tutor you or help you navigate our crazy curriculum!

If you are interested, please PM me and I will send you my contact info as well as pictures.
