Western University CVM 2019 Applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Don't stress! As far as I know, when you get an interview invite really varies and has nothing to do with how competitive you are. I received my interview invite really late, about a week before I interviewed. The dates I had to choose from? The very last dates available. I not only made it into the class of 2017, but I'm thriving. Don't worry, just yet 🙂

I finally got my interview confirmation! I hope to make it into the class and thrive like you! Thank you for your words of advice!

Has anyone noticed on their portal that next to GRE scores received its says a different date from when you took it. For instance I took the GRE 7/15 and 8/19 but it says my test date is Aug 1. I tried emailing them but no response. Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this.

Hi Pirate, the "date received" date indicates the day admissions got your score. Since you took it 07/15 and it takes awhile for the scores to be sent by ETS, it means admissions did not get it until 08/01. They probably got your August test scores as well but just did not update the portal. Don't read too much into the portal since the portal is just to show that they have everything they need for you to be considered as a "complete, ready to review" candidate. So don't worry! Also, I don't know who you contacted, but I'm sure if you email your advisor, your advisor will be more than happy to double check that they have both scores. You are fine I think 👍 🙂

What are some thoughts on bringing a laptop bag with you on the day of the interview? I'm toying with the idea of bringing my laptop with me the day of due to the long interval of time between the end of the tour and the curriculum Q&A.

I'm bringing some biochem stuff to study from, I think. I have my biochem final two days after my interview

#QuarterSystem :dead:

Toratora and aggievetgirl2013, I am going at 12/5 as well. Good luck on all of us!

@Rwwilliams It's my first time out to that area and will have most of Sunday to explore before my interview on Monday... I have a rental car, but not sure where to go! Any tips/ideas? I'd rather not obsess over my interview in my hotel room the whole time... :/

Depends on what you're into! I really like the hiking trails out here, I'm actually planning on going out to Steep Canyon probably tomorrow and Sunday with my pooch. It's about 2.5 miles up and down, so it doesn't take too long! There are amazing breweries out here, and some really good restaurants. I love the AYCE sushi on Holt and there's another really good place in Chino Hills. When I interviewed, I went up to Big Bear to look at the snow because, coming from Florida, I'd never seen it before, and that was fun!

I'm coming from Florida too (Gulf Coast)! Thanks for the ideas! Some nature sounds really good right about now; I'll look into doing some hiking for sure. I have a ton of food intolerances/allergies, so finding food is always tough, but it looks like there are some organic/GF/DF/paleo options out there that might fit the bill (leave it up to Californians). Thanks again!

Oh yeah, California is super into all that healthy stuff, and that includes paleo, gluten free, etc. If you're into a full-day hike, Mt. Baldy is supposed to be amazing. It's on my list to do at some point in time! PM me if I can help you with anything else! Always happy to help a fellow Floridian out 🙂

Got my interview invite for the first week of December! Unfortunately I couldn't get my first choice day off from work, so I'm hoping for 12/2. Plane tickets right after Thanksgiving are so expensive! 🙁

Hey guys. Just FYI, Sheraton Fairplex has a free shuttle you can use to get to/from the airport/hotel/school. Rooms are about ~$112 if you say you're booking it for your vet school interview at Western. Good luck everybody!

Many instate candidates get offered an interview?

Many instate candidates get offered an interview?
I would say that a lot of my class is made up of in-staters. There are a lot of people from UCD, CPP, and the other surrounding schools. The class of 2018 seems to have more OOSers than mine, though.

Got my interview invite today! So relieved...it was my first one and I was starting to think I wasn't gonna get any. I just have a few questions that I didn't see answers to. First, does anyone know how many apps they receive vs how many they interview vs how many they accept? Also, I thought I heard that their questions have changed from previous years. Does anyone who has interviewed already this year have any advice? Thanks! 🙂

@pirateslayme They received approximately 800 applications, set to interview around 300. The questions they asked this year were the same as what are around the internet. Just interviewed this past Saturday! 🙂

There were rumors circulating that their interview questions changed last year (and thus would be different this year), but that does not appear to be the case 🙂
Congratulations to everyone receiving interviews!

Unless it's changed recently, Western looks at your academic file to determine if you are offered an interview. If you "pass" the interview, you are put into a group of applications which is presented to the Dean, who then hand picks the class based on his own (unpublished) criteria. Those who are not initially picked for the class become alternates, and these are not ranked, but again are hand chosen to replace an individual accepted student who declines Western's offer.

Well, it's all in the Dean's hands now for me! Interview day is done! Good luck to everyone that still has to interview! I fell absolutely in LOVE with the school, the curriculum, and the people. Can't wait to hear a decision!!!

Interview confirmed for December 1st. Cali here I come!

Just got my invite yesterday afternoon with the option for the first interview date today!? I'm not in-state. Anyhow, really hoping for 12/2 - I'm working overnights right now at the e-clinic so figuring out how to rearrange my schedule has been wonky.

I saw on last years forum that notifications were sent 12/19. Just curious if anyone knows if it will be that early this year? It sounds like they usually send them later..

On my interview day, I believe they said we would find out by winter break so that sounds about right.

Yeah, at my interview they said the same- about mid december before winter break.

Do you happen to know what the interview questions were?

Do you happen to know what the interview questions were?
Nope, but I'd imagine they're pretty similar to the ones I had. The link to old interview questions has been posted a couple times in this thread.

Do you happen to know what the interview questions were?

They were different for every person that interviewed on my interview date, but in general pretty generic questions - think about the questions you've been asked at job/shadowing interviews.

but were the questions similar or the same as the ones on the interview feedback page?

All of my questions except for the icebreaker questions were from the interview feedback page. Study those and you'll be well prepared!

What kind of icebreaker questions did they ask? Were they "getting to know you" type questions?

I'm not going to say the exact questions to keep things fair, but they were typical "get to know you" questions. I had to think on my toes a little with one of them! But they were fun, and gave me the opportunity to show a little personality before the seriousness. 😉

Yup! UCF alum spring of 2013! Are you in the pre-vet club?
Sorry for the late reply, have not been on here in a while! I am in the pre-vet club but usually have to work during the meetings. It's nice to know there's a fellow knight at Western!

Hey Everyone!
I have my interview on Dec. 1 and Im staying at the Ontario Grand Inn and Suites on Sunday night and Monday night. I am renting a car so if anyone needs a ride to campus or anything let me know! Also I don't know anyone in Pomona and Im sure a lot of other OOSers will be in the same boat, so If anyone wants to meet up and get dinner or anything let me know as well!
Good luck with Interviews!

@Kylieks I have my interview on Dec 1st as well. Staying about a mile away from Western at the comfort in. We should soooo meet up! Are you doing the tour, faq, etc things or just the interview? I registered for all of it.

Good luck as well!
