of course it is always advised to have an external for backups...but would you religiously back it up every day? ...what if you miss a day? a few days in med school is a lot of work to be catching up on......better to have a notebook that wont' crash at all (thinkpad)

vista has shadow copies..which is the same thing..and you don't need an external hd (unlike leapard)..since vista will reserve 15% of your HD space just for this "time machine" purpose

yea..vista doesn't have the cool UGI like leopard..but it does the same job..

for anyone that does not know what vista shadow copies are..this is what it is

imagine you are working on editing a large photograph......say you take it a step to far and you wish you could go back to yesterdays "version"...or if you deleted a folder or file..and then decided a week later that you did need it...what to do now?

all you do is right click the file or folder..and click "go to previous versions" and choose the date you want to roll back to..simple as that! 🙂

yep..they all copy from each other..but in terms of backups..vista came up with it first

just one word of precaution using vista's backup software....you must use the exact type of HD and brand in order to restore it...so that means if your HD crashes and you get a diff size or brand HD..you're out of luck...stupid part on MSFT 😱

no..do not use shadow copies as backup..this is a temporary backup..like if you watned to restore only 1 file or folder without restoring all your other data....if your HD crashes..alll this data will be gone since shadow copies are written on the HD itself..not the external one

the most simple thing I do to make sure i have a "real backup" that will not fail me is to just copy "my documents" folder into an external hd every week or so..so at least the "real" files are there..not just a backup extension

By the way, the website just updated itself with the X300 in case anyone is interested. Seeing as how useful the tablets are, I don't know if I can wait for a HDD model to appear. I might just cave. But, that being said I am also not in med school or anything (just applying to post-bac now), so I think I can wait a nice year and hope they revamp the X61.

In all honesty, the Air is money better spent somewhere else, even within Apple. If you want a Mac, just wait for the new models for the Pro.


Yeah, it will be hard to get used to living without a touchpad, but it's really not that bad. The trackpoint aka the nipple is actually pretty solid and accurate. I've used a T41 and I find myself using it while I type to minimize movement. Not too bad. Besides, if I really needed a mouse, a handy Bluetooth one is just fine.

Do you really need a brand-spanking new computer with the 3.0 ghz dual core (whcih you will rarely if ever use it's full potential unless you're burning a dvd-rw, defragmenting your hard drive, installing WoW, and playing Halo 2, another copy of Wow that you apaprently have on your computer, while having AIM, a media player, 50 windows of internet explorer up, etc.)

Majority of you won't be using a new laptop's full potential so why buy one in the first place? Unless your laptop is more than 5-6 years (in which case you might wwant one then), or your laptop is genuinely falling apart and is too unstable (hardware-wise). Just ask your friendly Asian/Indian friend in medical school to fix up your computer, he'll usually do it for free lol.

All you really need is to backup your old stuff, reinstall your OS, upgrade your RAM to at least 768-1024 megabytes, and get a new laptop battery.

No need to thank me now. Your future self will be thanking me when you've learned to save your money for necessary things over frivolous things (like a BMW M3 right out of med. school ha ha).

Same thing goes with cars, don't get a new one if your car that you ahve right now works fine (and is pretty stable - get a toyota or honda if you don't).

Oh btw, all of this advice can be thrown to **** if you're mad rich. In that case, none of this applies to you (i know you're out there!!!)

Mastermood - I tend to agree with everything you said. I am going to find it difficult to trade out my perfectly good laptop, but I think the advantage of a tablet will be worth it. having it shipped to a friend in the US is the best method..the lenovo canada site is all messed up and you will end up paying a whole lot more.

it is called progress. I really h8 waiting for the computer load stuff so I cant wait to get my hands on the new equipment. There is a huge difference between what we had 4-5 years ago and now. Yes those laptops would run almost anything that we got today but how much time is wasted on waiting for the stuff to load? Plus the quality of screens and availability of tablet PC makes people think of getting a new computer.

3GB of ram... why? Anything about 2Gb does not make your computer run any faster unless you are doing some massive photoshop.

but really..it's more for my love of thinkpads...i am an IT guy..and I have owned over 5 notebooks, from compaqs, to hps, to toshibas..they have all sucked soo baddd..I must have reformatted and reinstalled the OS at least 5-6x on each machine..

so..when i got my first thinkpad t40 in 2002...and after using it for over 3 years...not 1 freeze, bsod, or anything...I was impressed...very impressed...

When I finally got out in the work force in IT, i relized how valuable thinkpads are to corporate executives and most fortune 500 companies swear by them

they even have a $5000 executive version of the thinpad, ..and the owner of my company totes it around...🙂

I would take the 1400*1050 resolution..that means more screen real estate ...and for a 12 in screen..screen real estate is valuable..but it may make the resolution too small

do you have myopia or hyperopia? if so..then i would recommend the 1024*768 screen

LOL - yah, this is definitely not a lightweight!! But I am clumsy, so I went with indestructible, since I don't take it anywhere, anyway. It has already survived a couple of keyboard spills and drops... And you're right - it is fast, too.

A tablet was tempting, but they are so expensive, and for the same price, you usually get a much smaller screen.

I haven't heard of a previous Toshiba owner who wasn't pretty happy with theirs, so that made up my mind. I'm happy with it.

I'm thinking about a 17'' macbook pro now...

I have a regular MacBook and it's awesome. You might want to check them out too because they are lighter, smaller and about $1000 cheaper, but with very similar specs (just not as fancy and shiny looking). They also get better wifi reception because of the plastic casing as opposed to the metal casing on the macbook pro. You can't go wrong with a mac, though. 😀

so basically what i've been reading is that the screen and video card are the only real differences in macbook vs. macbook pro's? The difference in processor speed won't matter in med school busniess. Am I right in saying this?

There's a few more differences between the two. I believe the MB Pro has a LED backlight and one for the keyboard as well. The pro also has the new multitouch trackpad (i.e. the same pad used in the iPhone touchscreen). Furthermore, the Pro comes standard with the upgraded processor, although both MB are running the Penryn, so either one is fine. Also, 2 gigs RAM is standard for the Pro and it might run even faster than normal (couldn't find the DMM speeds).

I'm a little annoyed that you can't configure/customize it because I would lower the processor and hard drive space on the Pro to lower the price (maybe even the video card), because the chipset is probably better in general. But, seeing as how they want a stranglehold on their prices, it doesn't seem possible.

Since it's only a matter of time until they integrate the rest of the Pro's tech (multitouch) to regular Macbooks, you could wait until the next major upgrade to them comes, which should be soon. Engadget speculates that Apple needs to advertise the multitouch and LED backlight on the Pro and Air mainly to push the MB Air. If the regular MB had all of this, what would become of the pricey Air?

It's hard to describe how much it's changed my notetaking style. However, to be the most clear (and most understandable to those who have never used a tablet), you will at times have a "chalk talk". Those without a tablet end up taking out paper and pencil to do all the drawings that go up on the chalkboard, and their drawings are in black and white (or blue if they use a blue ink pen). Those of us with tablets do the drawing on our computer in full color and can extend the paper anyway we choose if we happen to run out of room on the original "piece of paper". And then we can print it out (which has been often asked for by my classmates who lost their drawings or wanted one in color or one that wasn't scrunched and run up the sides of their piece of paper).

As for tablets with ppts, I found that also invaluable. Histo ppts I could point to the exact cell and write a note without having to click, drag, relocate, etc. Change colors for arrows, etc. faster than with the draw feature. I can highlight anatomy parts, add stuff, clip content.. it's just more versatile.

At our school, tablets would be fairly useless (in fact, a few classmates ditched bringing them to class after the first week). The professors put together all of their ppts and notes they want us to have & we buy the pack at the beginning of the semester, so, there's nothing else to really do but draw & write on those.

At first I was worried that I'd be at a disadvantage, but I can honestly say that it would have been fun, but a waste of money for me.

Toshiba has a tablet, btw.

Those of us with tablets do the drawing on our computer in full color and can extend the paper anyway we choose if we happen to run out of room on the original "piece of paper". And then we can print it out (which has been often asked for by my classmates who lost their drawings or wanted one in color or one that wasn't scrunched and run up the sides of their piece of paper).

As for tablets with ppts, I found that also invaluable. Histo ppts I could point to the exact cell and write a note without having to click, drag, relocate, etc. Change colors for arrows, etc. faster than with the draw feature. I can highlight anatomy parts, add stuff, clip content.. it's just more versatile.

Huge thanks for the explanation. And those chalk talks/histo ppts really seal the deal for me. The thing is I too would like to see and feel it in person before I make the dive. I've been wanting a Lenovo so I think I'll stick to their newest line.

Although, I can't say that I am close to med school or anything. I'm applying for the 08-09 cycle while waiting to hear from post-bacs.


Orthodoc, I can see this as a possibility, but are laptops in general not used then? It's things like this that actually make me want to wait until I know for sure where I am going.

At our school, tablets would be fairly useless (in fact, a few classmates ditched bringing them to class after the first week). The professors put together all of their ppts and notes they want us to have & we buy the pack at the beginning of the semester, so, there's nothing else to really do but draw & write on those.

At first I was worried that I'd be at a disadvantage, but I can honestly say that it would have been fun, but a waste of money for me.

Toshiba has a tablet, btw.

you are right..you are better off buying a tablet if your school supports it...there are many schools that are tech oriented, so having a tablet is a huge plus..especially since all notes and everything is delivered electronically...

however, if your school is still old school...the old pen and paper way...you're better off with a normal notebook since you and a few others would be the only ones using it in your class

There's a few more differences between the two. I believe the MB Pro has a LED backlight and one for the keyboard as well. The pro also has the new multitouch trackpad (i.e. the same pad used in the iPhone touchscreen). Furthermore, the Pro comes standard with the upgraded processor, although both MB are running the Penryn, so either one is fine. Also, 2 gigs RAM is standard for the Pro and it might run even faster than normal (couldn't find the DMM speeds).

I'm a little annoyed that you can't configure/customize it because I would lower the processor and hard drive space on the Pro to lower the price (maybe even the video card), because the chipset is probably better in general. But, seeing as how they want a stranglehold on their prices, it doesn't seem possible.

Since it's only a matter of time until they integrate the rest of the Pro's tech (multitouch) to regular Macbooks, you could wait until the next major upgrade to them comes, which should be soon. Engadget speculates that Apple needs to advertise the multitouch and LED backlight on the Pro and Air mainly to push the MB Air. If the regular MB had all of this, what would become of the pricey Air?

i actually checked it out yesterday online via the apple compare button, besides the led keyboard and upgraded video card, they're basically the same boxes. (I think they upgraded the touch pad's with the update a few weeks ago.)
