William Carey University (WCU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Good luck to everyone applying this year! I applied last cycle and I will be starting my first year here next month. If you have any questions I can answer, feel free to contact me.

I am. 35 y/o non-trad, Louisiana resident. 3.5 cGPA, 3.0 sGPA, 23MCAT initially (10V/6P/7B). Hopefully retake is better.

I've talked to a couple of the OMS-3's doing their EM rotation in McComb- they all seem really happy and have good things to say about the school.

Has anyone gotten in without a LOR from a DO?

I've shadowed MD primary care physicians, but the local DO doesn't allow shadowing. I've worked with a DO in the ER before, but I have no way to contact him for a LOR because he moved.

I was accepted without a letter from a DO.

Louisiana res. applying here definitely and hoping for a good mcat. good luck people

Do they give preference to in-state?

For those that were accepted, what were your stats if you don't mind sharing?

What did they seem to focus on as major part of application?

MS resident here....non-trad., 13yrs nursing, awaiting AACOMAS verification

That's encouraging....read on here that (not about WC) some schools do not like nurses

Hopefully ill be the first nurse matriculating with only an ADN lol

As far as nursing goes, I only have an ADN. When I finished my biology degree job prospects were depressing and I needed a plan in case I never got accepted.

Ill have close to 200 hours with only an associates. When I spoke with someone on the adcom there they said it wouldn't prevent me from matriculating but he wanted me to know that everybody that had been accepted in the past had a bachelor degree.....

I don't think there is any rule against it, but like you said, everyone has at least a Bachelors degree, with many having advanced degrees (MS, PhD). You will have to realize that this puts you at a disadvantage since you are less competitive without a higher degree.

Best of luck to you!

Yea I figured this much. The only reason my first application cycle will be without a bachelors is because instead of doing a RN-bsn bridge next year ill be doing prereqs trying to beat that 2015 mcat.

Originally I was going to wait a cycle and apply late after my bridge program completed but I was told by several people to go ahead and apply. All they could say was no..

I hope it works out for you!

The great thing about WCUCOM is that if they send you a secondary, they are genuinely interested in you. So good luck to you guys this cycle!

what is the secondary like? essay prompts?

what is the secondary like? essay prompts?

The secondary covers basic demographic info and the only essay prompt is a short essay on how your future career goals relate to their mission. WCUCOM takes their mission very seriously.

For those of you who got secondaries, what was the time between AACOMAS transmitted to them and invite for the secondary? Thanks

I'm applying here as well 3.1 (s) and 2.95 (c) (ouch) expected mcat 25+ (aug 22)...AA male from NOLA. Hoping to get some TLC from WC-COM this year

Man
I was verified on the 1st day yet still no secondaries
Could it be because I am international? xD

Did you guys, single or double space the your essay?

I want to add an additional page to my essay or should I just keep it in the space provided?

I have an essay that is 1.5 spaced and fits on the space provided below.

I submitted my secondary a while back. Has anyone gotten receipt or notification that their secondary has been received?

+1. Very interested to see if there has been an upward trend.

There cannot help but be an upward trend for one main reason. The first class did NOT have to have an minimum score on the COMSAE in order to take the COMLEX. Most schools, from my understanding, you have a minimum COMSAE score in order to take the COMLEX. This will be in place at WCUCOM for the Class of 2016 on. It was a strong recommendation for my class that you did NOT take the COMLEX unless you had a minimum of 450 on the last COMSAE. From what I can tell, this recommendation is being heeded by my class. We will know for sure after all of us take the COMLEX. We have until August 30th to do so.

Questions for those already enrolled:

1.) Where are all the hub sites for 3rd and 4th year rotations?

2.) Do you get to choose where you will go for those or do you get randomly assigned?

TIA.

Are the sites close to Hattiesburg and is there an option of only doing sites within a driving distance?

Anyone married/with a family that can comment on rotating?

I haven't heard anything from William Carey. Looks like that regional bias is legit..
