WSU 2024-2025 (c/o 2029 hopefuls)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am attending tonight's mixer and tour and my interview is Friday. I have not interviewed before, so I don't know what to expect at the mixer, but I would guess they will have food and people available to answer questions. Since you are OOS, does that mean you have an acceptance already? Do you have any questions about Pullman?
Edit: I just reviewed my email and it looks like light snacks will be provided. The mixer is at 5:30 and there is a student panel at 6:30.
Good Luck! I'm sure you'll do great 🙂
I'm attending Thursday's one. Yes, I have my acceptance. I'm coming to check the school as I have another offer and I'm torn between the two.
I'm coming from Vancouver, BC and I'm not much worried about Pullman being a small town, I'm mostly anxious for leaving friends and family and starting a new life over there.
I would love to know if there's a neighborhood or area that I should avoid, if I want to live in a quiet, safe, cat-friendly neighborhood
Also, I'm a non-traditional and will be coming with my hubby and 3 cats to Pullman if I make the decision.

I don't think you will have any concerns with Pullman then. It's a very safe, quiet place overall. I would avoid frat row because there are lots of undergrads around, but there aren't many places for rent in that area anyways. Some students prefer to live in Moscow as there are often more housing options. I can't remember if WSU offers the ability to switch to in-state residency after the first year. If they do, you should stay in Pullman to get residency.
There's not a lot to do in Pullman, but I don't mind that because I like that it is a quieter town. I live in a pet friendly 3 bed, 1 bath duplex and my rent is around $1300. My friends live a few blocks away in a 2 bed 1 bath and pay similar prices. There are lots of apartments, but they tend to be smaller and most only allow 2 pets. With 3 cats, a house will probably be your best bet. There are many good Facebook pages to look for available housing.

Where is your other acceptance?

International students will never get the in state tuition no matter how long they live here unless he has green card or dual citizenship.

Thanks a lot! That's really helpful. My other one is Oregon State. For WSU, I can only apply for residency if I get the L2 visa ( intracompany transfer through my husband), otherwise I pay the OOS fee all 4 years. It's a huge difference as OSU doesn't consider school years for residency.

I have lived in Pullman for 4 years and I am happy to answer any questions. I commute to work in Clarkston. Spokane is 1.5 hours away if you need more shopping. Pullman itself is a very cute community and I really enjoy it. I grew up in one of the biggest cities in Idaho (like 60,000 people at the time lol), so that is my main comparison. I like small towns, so it doesn't bother me. Is there anything in particular you want to know about the area? Anything you like to do or that you feel is necessary in a city?

Edit: I see that you also asked about the winter. I have a skewed viewpoint of winter because I grew up somewhere where school was only cancelled if it was -20 or -30 with windchill (or if the buses would not start). I would consider Pullman to have mild winters. This winter in particularly has been very warm. We have had snow probably twice and it was only a few inches that melted within a few days. Pullman uses gravel instead of salt on the roads and they are good about keeping them clear. That being said, we do have snow most winters. I would say average winter temp is 20-30 degrees. Drive slowly in the snow and you will be fine.
The roads outside of Pullman are less well maintained, so keep that in mind if you need to drive to Spokane, the LC Valley, or any of the surrounding areas in the winter. When we have snow, my 45 minute commute to Clarkston becomes a 60 minute commute.
Almost everywhere in Pullman is 5-10 minutes to WSU, so you will not need to do much driving in the snow if you aren't planning on leaving town. I recommend googling the Palouse. This is highest wheat producing county in the nation and the rolling hills of wheat are gorgeous in the summer. There is a national forest about an hour away with smaller hikes closer to Pullman. This area is also home to the Nez Perce tribe and is the birthplace of the Appaloosa horse breed.

Thank you so much! This helped me gain a greater insight! I’m from a smaller dairy town (Visalia, CA) so I’m definitely used to a small town feel. I’ll most likely be accepting my seat!! I’m happy to trade my 110 degree summers for 20-30 degree winters lol!

Specific visas allow for residency.
good to hear that will work for you. But in our meeting that the admission said international students will pay OOS tuitions for 4 years. I don’t know if you will be the exception for that.

Thanks for the note.
I talked to Residency office, but I will check with the admission team again once I'm in Pullman.

Unfortunately we do sometimes have 110 degree summers 😂 I would say it’s usually in the 90s in the summer

Update on the mixer. They had a charcuterie board. There were quite a few applicants there, as well the students that were on the student panel. It was a good opportunity to talk to some other applicants and to ask the students questions. The panel was around 8 students.

Idk where the other IS people on this thread have disappeared to, but I am nervously refreshing my email already 😳

They said they would let us know in the next 2 weeks. So 2 weeks of religiously checking my email lol
It took them 12 days to get back to me with decisions, so don't drive yourself too crazy.

(Easier said than done I know!)

Ugh. I know they need to spend a lot of time reviewing everything, but I hate the stressful waiting game

Does anyone know if offers would list the prereqs that are not met?

I just received my official offer in mail and it's different from the email one. There's only a general statement that I agree to complete all prereqs by August 1st, 2025.

I think that is worth emailing them about. Did you have all of your prereqs put into the WSU supplemental in VMCAS?

I did, but haven't heard back. I think they're still busy with MT interviews.
The supplemental was mainly for biomed science courses, right? I put OChem and Microbiol with all the descriptions. OSU offer had the prereq listed, so that's why I'm a bit confused.
If I get any response, I will let you know 🙂

Many moons ago I simply called admissions and spoke to KT to find out if/what I was missing - maybe give them a ring, they're very nice!

Please let us know when you hear back! I’m a WIMU (Idaho) applicant and had my interview a few days ago. Do you know if they email or call for acceptance?

I’m also an Idaho resident and I know in the previous years they call first and then email.

IS was told we’d hear back two to three weeks after interviewing, which is around 2/14- 2/21

For anyone wanting to double check whether they fulfilled their prereqs, email Amie Jones or call her. She'd get back to you in 3-4 business days 🙂

What day was your interview? They told me 2 weeks and to call them if I hadn’t heard back by 3 weeks. They did say it was going to all be by email because I specifically asked about phone calls, as they have done that in previous years. They said they might do follow up calls, but main decisions will be via email

Any other IS applicants beyond anxious this week? I feel like I’m checking my email every 5 minutes 😭

That last post was meant to be a reply to Maddea, but I didn't actually hit reply. Oops

I have been so anxious all week!! I just want them to rip the bandaid off

I interviewed last Thursday the 6th! Good luck to you all! 🍀

I didn't realize that they were interviewing the Idaho students so much later than the Washington ones! Hopefully you get some news soon and don't have to wait a full 2 weeks!

I just received a phone call from a Washington number and immediately panicked thinking it was the admissions office. Turns out it was just the WSU alert system telling me about a winter weather warning. My adrenaline is way too high right now... 😭

The call to let us know that we will be getting emails this afternoon almost gave me a heart attack. Good luck IS applicants! Rooting for you all 🙂

Ahhh so exciting!!! Interested to see from acceptances who is definitely planning to attend WSU? I am 😍

Now I’m just nervous because I never even got the email saying they would say anything today, hopefully that’s not bad

I just received an email telling me that I was waitlisted. I am happy to have even made it this far, but it is a little frustrating because my husband is trying to make career decisions in the next few months based on where I ended up going to vet school.
Does anyone know how much the waitlist usually moves or how quickly? It looks like they do not give you a waitlist number or ranking this year.

I believe the IS waitlist does not typically move much, but the OOS waitlist might.

It usually doesn't move much, but last year had more movement than usual. I was pulled off of the waitlist along with at least 2 of my other classmates, that I know of. In the past, if you were within the top 50% of the waitlist, they would include that in the e-mail, but wouldn't say anything about position if you were not in the top 50%. That could be different this year, though.

All IS? Or OOS?

I emailed WSU about setting up a tour as a waitlisted student, and they told me waitlist rankings would be sent out soon? I didn't even think we got to know our ranking!?
Are you IS or OOS? They have changed the admissions process the past few years and rank some years, but not others

IK I'M LIKE BRUH. They just casually said "rank positions will be sent out soon" I honestly didn't even ask about positions I just said I was a waitlisted student who wanted to tour the campus in March 😆
