Hey everyone, I figured I'd use this post rather than starting a whole new one... has anyone considered housing at WSU for this upcoming year? I don't think I'll know anyone at all before I get there but it's pretty expensive to live alone... plus I know I'm not the only one who needs a pet friendly place (a fat cat and neurotic little dog, not to mention lots of geckos... a rat... and I think I'll be begging for spare change soon if I bring home any more mouths to feed so I'm done with the pets!)

Does anyone out there have plans yet?

Housing here isn't that bad. Compared to the west side, it's dirt cheap. I think you could find a 1 bedroom from $450-600.

Lots of students live in trailers. If you can afford buying a trailer (some are as low as $6,000, I've seen one for $2,500....not that I'd want to live in that one. Most ones that don't scare me are 17,000+ ) you're set for inexpensive lot rent. $200-300/mo depending on the park.

There are pet friendly apartments and some that even have kennels. Birch Hills has a little dog park. http://www.dabcomgmt.com/birch_hills.htm

Of course you could get a rent/buy a house and share with roomies. There will be a packet sent out later that will list homes/trailers for sale and people looking for roommates. From what I've seen, getting a room in a house will start in the mid $300s plus utes.

There's plenty of stuff on CraigsList now. I suggest looking sooner rather than later if you want more apartment options-- Pullman/Moscow are college towns and many students arrange for their housing before they leave for the summer.

I currently live in north campus heights in a one bedroom, and my rent (w/ dishwasher) is $405 a month, with a pet deposit in the begining (1/2 of it refundable I believe), I think it was $300, cant remember exactly right now. Its not the ritz, but they are fairly inexpensive (compared to birch hills, which is $600 a month).

Highly recommend the trailer living! There is one in my neighborhood for $3000 right now which is only marginally scary and I got mine for way less than $17000 and it is definitely NOT scary at all. But the neighborhood sometimes is. There are lots of other vet students here though so it's not too bad all in all. I have a woodstove too so my power bill is under $30 in the winter and under $20 in the summer. So all in all my living costs are under $500 including groceries and phone and internet. pretty sweet deal.

Hey everyone, i'm new to this site but housing is definitely something i need to start thinking about for next year! does north campus heights allow cats and dogs? or just cats? are there any other apartments besides birch hills that allow dogs? thats a little out of my price range i think.

NCH, allows dogs, I have a 1 year old Golden Retriever and a Ball Python, and I know other people who have had multiple dogs living here. Its harder for dogs but their are other places.

Yep, trailers are awesome! (And now I also really want a woodstove!)

I'm sure there are good ones for under 17k. I think I missed the boat on those. All the ones I saw under that price mark had original shag carpeting and mold/water damage. Plus I'm not vey handy (don't know anyone handy either) and wanted something less likely to need improvement soon. Trust me, me+tools =/= home improvement. 🙂

Even though it only needs to last 4 years, make sure you give the trailer a good look over. One of my classmates got a super cheap one, then ended up paying more than the trailer was worth when the plumbing crapped out.

I have a carpenter for a fiancee and I am willing to lend him out. It's pretty handy to have free labor and discounted supplies for home repair!

wow everyone, thanks for the great feedback!

I've actually been favoring the trailer idea since I met with the real estate agent who came to the wsu vetmed open house last spring... he and i have been emailing back and forth and i wasn't aware that so many other students have gone the trailer route... i guess there's something to be said if there are a lot of people who have tried and recommend it!

I'm not too concerned about qualifying for the financing, since both my car and all of my student loans have gone through so far with no cosigner needed... my biggest concern is losing money if I end up with a money pit rather than an investment. also, I'm planning on coming out in april sometime to drive around and actually look at some of the mobile home parks myself. any suggestions for good vs scary parks? Also, has anyone tried getting a roomate and sharing the cost of living? I'd rather not get into the pricier homes unless I can get a roomate, but again, I don't want to buy something horribly cheap and then end up in something that won't sell when the four years is up.

I CAN'T WAIT THOUGH!!!! ONE MORE WEEK OF BIOCHEM AND THEN NO MORE CHEM EVER AGAIN!!!! 😳)

about financing. For most trailers, you can't get a mortgage. You'd have to look at a manufactured home and that *significantly* increases the amount you're looking at spending. I am a non-trad and lucky enough to have had some income years to save up. Just FYI!!!

I just wanted to say hi to everyone, I think i will be attending wsu as an oos student, and i am excited!
Just figured i would introduce myself!

Ditto what Tealamutt said. Trailer financing is different from house/regular type stuff.

Now I can't tell you what's scary since everyone has a different scary tolerance level 🙂, but I can tell you what's good. In Pullman the nicest park is Golden Hills - but it's expensive there. I haven't seen a home available for under 40k, at least not when I was looking. They do allow dogs.

In Moscow the nicest park is Robinson. It's a larger park and you can find a range of mobile homes from 11,000 to 70,000. It's very well kept and quiet. They do not allow dogs though.

When I was searching for my trailer I saw one park in Moscow (Bel-air, I think) which did creep me out. Mostly because there was a guy outside with a shotgun shooting at tires while clearly drunk.... I don't live there 😛

I could post my "trailer park 101" speech from Dr. Leather's class (everything in it was absolutely true!) but I think the best idea for you is to take a tour. Some of the parks are awful, mine is lower on the list of quality but my trailer is one of the nicer ones and since I am surrounded by 4 other vet students I feel pretty safe (but do have a dog and sleep with a gun next to the bed.) You'll really have to just beat the street on this one cause like Lailanni said, 'scary' is highly variable and subjective.

I've lived in Campus Vista in Pullman for almost two years so far and don't have many complaints. I've had the occasional weird thing happen, cops have only come a few times this academic year, and still haven't met one of my neighbors 😉 But, on the other side of my trailer is a vet student and the park is really quiet in general. Definitely a great place to live and study. Cheap too. My trailer was under 10,000 and I've done minimal repair- sealed the roof and replaced exterior doors.

Like tealamutt was saying,
It really is all about your perspective and what you're comfortable with.

Well, I'm sure a scary park wouldn't be much worse than the U-district! and my dog may not be big enough to do damage but he's sure as heck the loudest alarm system you could ever ask for! Thanks for the tips though. I'll definitely check out the dog-friendly ones when I'm over there next month.

Does anyone know whether tablets or laptops are preferred by the school?
I have to buy a new one either way, and i do not want to buy the wrong thing.

There are only a couple people in our class that even use a computer during lectures. Most of us just use the notes provided from the professors, so I don't think it is a big deal if you have a tablet computer or not.

I was curious if there were any other guys who are going to be going to WSU for vet school (2013), I know a few, but was just wondering it there were any others out there.

so-my-spacebar-key-doesnt-work....sorry-about-that...-for-those-of-you-that-are-familiar-with-the-pullman-area,-what-are-some-of-the-closest-apartments-to-Bustad-Hall?-Its-hard-to-look-at-apartments-online-wondering-where-they-are...

Pullmans really not that big, and has a really good bus system (express runs about every 15 minutes), so most of the apartments are close to campus

If you need a pet friendly place I would look into Birch Hills. I don't know of many other apartments here that are pet friendly without being family housing.

You can also look into duplexes and smaller houses because housing really isn't that expensive here (although some of the rental agencies are better than others I have heard).

Good luck in your search!

Like was said above, Pullman is pretty small and you're not going to have much of a communte no matter where in town you pick.

As much time as you're going to be spending in Bustad it's probably not a bad thing to be slightly farther away 😉

I don't even live in Pullman and it only takes me 10-15 mintues to get to school.

Around now is probably a good time to come over and check out apartments - I know they're starting to show a lot of them.

So here is a list of pet-friendly apartments where I can live in a one-bedroom. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations?

Campus Commons
Birch Hills
Coffeehouse apartments (coug housing)
Glen Dimer
Helene's Prperties (Turner apartments)
North Campus Heights
Wil-Ru

I guess I had forgotten about some of those! I have a friend that lives in Campus Commons and they aren't too bad. I was going to look at Wil-ru awhile back but the manager was really flaky. North Campus Heights are all cement and look a little but like a prison to me...although they may be wonderful inside, I have just never been in them. I thought Helene's only had cat friendly, so I don't know anything about Turner Apts. Birch Hills is beautiful, but expensive. The dog park can be muddy I have heard...but at least they have dog wash stations to wash them after romping around in the mud. I was going to live there, but we ended up finding a nice place in Golden Hills for next year. Good luck in your apt. search!!!!

Tealamutt, I'm curious to know which neighborhood you are in that is cheaper but still safe? My boyfriend and I drove out to Pullman and checked out a few parks... We only got to see Golden Hills and the one right next to it (which we really like but I'm pretty sure it'll be out of my reach budgetwise...) we also drove through Campus Vista and I have to admit it was a little depressing... but does it actually stay pretty quiet? I can deal with it (I am a poor student, after all, I might as well resign myself to living like one!) as long as it's safer than it looks.

heydukelives...Any concerns about homes or cars being broken into? I think it'd be great if there are other vet students around, at least I wouldn't feel too isolated.

Thanks again!

Hi Washington people,

Did you know they're proposing to take off the 7% cap on tuition increases? How would you like your tuition to raise 14-26% in just one year? Sound crappy to you?

Go here to send letters to your local lawmakers and tell them what an awful idea it is.
http://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/5546/t/5551/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=466

It is FAST, took me like 2 minutes to enter my zipcode and hit send. They pre-write a letter for you, or you can make your own.

Please don't let yourselves get screwed with an insane tuition increase!

I don't worry about people breaking in but I do lock my car doors and have a deadbolt. Just common sense stuff. The guy before me just had a simple padlock on the front door though- it was the original mobile home door. It really is quiet. Overall, neighbors are pretty nice and keep an eye out for each other. I would definitely recommend it.

So I was wondering if anyone here has ever come across any opportunities at WSU for adopting dogs somehow through the vet school? 🙂

I am not sure about through the vet school, I know people have adopted exotics through it (little birds, lizards, etc), but Pullman does have a Humane Society animal shelter

I know that they are trying to get rid of the colony dog program, but as of right now there is the opportunity to adopt those dogs. I have also heard of third years adopting their spay dogs. There are also two shelters and they usually have some pretty cute pups too!

🙂 Just checking in to see if any incoming 1st years have questions... I remember last year this time I was a little nervous. (Don't worry, there's really nothing to be nervous about)
