Waitlisted today. Fie. Fie I say! WSU is my 2nd choice and I was really hoping to have them as backup in case Western was like "LOL SCREW YOU" at me. Of course, I got into my 3rd choice but... there are reasons it was my 3rd choice. Meh. Rather bummed now as I thought I did pretty spectacularly at my interview.

does anyone know if they'll tell you your number on the waitlist?

I'm under the impression that the WSU OOS waitlist does move a bit, so there's hope!

If I'm not prying, can I ask why OSU is your 3rd choice? Is it because they're a newer school? Or just the location? Or that they're annoyingly picky with pre-reqs that you don't need/want?

I've lived in Oregon for the past 16 years, and while it is a beautiful state and I would be happy living here and raising a family, for now, I want to get OUT. I still live with my parents so getting far away from the family and really establishing that I am a Grade-A, Certified Grownup would be awesome (I'm 23)... and being an hour and a half away from home doesn't seem like it would do that so much. It would be better if Corvallis was more Portlandish but it seems even less impressive than Salem, where I went for undergrad. (Mind, it still beats Pullman, but not by much.) Corvallis also is an hour and a half from the airport, which would suck coming home after visiting my boyfriend in LA (whereas at least Pullman has a shuttle to Spokane so I wouldn't have to worry about driving it) -- and Eugene airport would be about $100 more to fly from than PDX, so that'd be lame. OSU also does terminal surgeries, which neither WSU or Western does and which I don't like the idea of, and they weren't super welcoming when I was there, with the exception of the very nice admissions lady. Oh! And I'd still need to take animal nutrition this summer, blah.

So, yeah. Pullman may be kind of a hole, lol, but everyone was REALLY nice there and the facilities were top-notch, so if I don't get into Western I know I could be happy there. Oregon... I think I'd have to work to be happy instead of it coming naturally, and I'd rather be working on my studies!

Waitlisted today at WSU (OOS). Not that I wanted to go there much anyway. They were my last choice. I'm going to contact them on Monday and ask to be removed from consideration so the rest of you can move up the waitlist.

That is certainly news. Anyone know what year WSU removed terminal surgeries from the curriculum?

Thank you for looking that up. However, the article you linked states WSU's official position as:

WSU's veterinary college has been continually pressured by AVAR to eliminate terminal surgery altogether. "The veterinary school decided to keep the method of teaching open as an option for students who learn better with hands-on experience," Powell said.

"The college thinks that at this point, it is the students' choice to take the course or not," Powell said. "Students learn in different ways."

Has anything changed since this was published in 2003?

Participation in terminal surgeries has been on a strictly voluntary basis at WSU since...what?...1991-ish when the CVM established their Alternative Surgery Program.

I understand this is a critical issue for some and is why I am bringing it up. I don't want to see anyone choosing WSU because they think they are a terminal surgery-free curriculum when it is not.

For those interested, AVAR does have the results of a survey conducted regarding the alternative surgery options each US/Canadian school offers. Not sure how old it is, but it's there.

Well, I did mention there might be an elective class with terminals, it does appear that that is still the case. For me personally as long as it's not required of me then I don't care if other students at the school are allowed to do it or not. *shrug* I just wouldn't take that particular course.

Cool, cool. Just making sure. I (mis)interpreted your original comment as the absence of terminal surgeries being a deciding factor for selecting to attend WSU over OSU.

Pullman is a bigger hole than what first impressions lead it to be. If I could give a word of advice, it would be to live in Moscow or any one of the many surrounding bedroom communities and commute to Pullman.

Personally, I have huge suspicions I would've been happier if I'd gone to OSU. Then again, I freely admit I am biased.

Take it or leave it. Whatever you do, don't buy the mobile home at 308 Campus Vista... 😉

State residency requirements are state residency requirements. Verify them for WA, but if you maintain a driver's license & vehicle registration/ID card issued from, are registered to vote through, possess a mailing address in and/or pay state taxes to, for 6-12 months (varies) as a nonstudent or ~12 months (varies) as a part-time student, you can claim that state as your state of residence.

Not that I'm suggesting you bend the rules or anything, gods forbid, but if you maintained a PO Box in Pullman (USPS/Mailboxes Etc/WSU's campus USPS station) or used a parent's address (ASSuming they are WA residents) for the above and all school-related purposes, you should be fine. Just don't invite Warwick to your trailer trash bash in Moscow and then complain to him about in-state tuition rates... 😉

The cities/colleges are so close together (8 miles), I think there is a lot of blurring that goes on because they are state-border towns. Even if you found employment in Moscow you should be fine as long as it was not your sole employment source/year round for tax purposes. You can even own land/house's/etc. in state's other than your one of legal residence, it just means additional paperwork to wade through come tax time. It should go without saying to verify all this by checking WA's employment/state income tax/property income tax laws and regs before attempting to work/buy a home out of state.

Thanks so much for the info!

When it gets snowy, is it difficult to get into Pullman from Moscow? I'm kind of a snow wimp, we don't get much of it on my side of the state.

Would you recommend getting a trailer? I know that quite a few people do..... Pros and cons?

Thanks!!! You're most helpful and I appreciate it!🙂

Don't take what I'm about to say as fact but...

When I was talking to them about getting IS tuition I think they said that once you have IS status you don't have to verify it again. Also they said that a student was screwed out of instate tuition because she tried to use a PO box as her address while really living in Moscow.

I think this means that since you are IS already it won't matter where you live. I would definitely verify this is true and not take my word for it though.

Once you are a resident of a state it is relatively easy to maintain that status as long as you are careful. Maintain your voting and car registration in WA, keep your WA driver's license and use your (WA resident) parents' address as your permanent address (when you file taxes, etc) and you'll be a WA resident. If you are being claimed as a dependent by your WA-resident parents for 2008 that will ensure your status even further, as a dependent's residency will follow that of their parents (and actually if you are claiming yourself as independent, WSU asks that you submit tax forms showing your independence from the calendar year preceding the one where you submit the residency forms...so that means 2007).

Here is the WA residency form for WSU: http://www.wsu.edu/NIS/images/resqufrm.pdf

I am pretty obsessed with the residency stuff because I have had to make sure that I am maintaining my WA residency while working in a different state. I graduated from college (in MA) last May and have been working in Massachusetts since June 07. I am still claimed as a dependent, which makes things easier for me, because it will actually be my parents' info that is on the residency questionnaire part 3. Even so, my car is registered in WA (actually a HUGE pain the a*s in Boston/Cambridge because you can't park on the street unless your car has a permit, and you can't get a permit unless the car is registered in MA). My driver's liscence is from WA, I do absentee ballots for WA elections (well actually my county does everything by mail already but I have my parents send it to me in MA so that I can participate). I use my permanent WA address for taxes, and filed my MA income taxes as a non-resident.

All that just so I can go to school in Pullman! Blech! I really hope they let me in!

If I go to WSU I think I will also live in Moscow. I will maintain all of my WA ties and I think my residency status will be okay as my moscow address will only be a "temporary address" and not a residence. I talked to some people while I was at the school and they said that the Moscow/Pullman road is well-mainted even during storms (not the case with the Colfax-Pullman road). I am afraid of snow but it sounded like the well-travelled roads are usually okay.

FractiousCat:
You're correct. They know what is what when it comes to ID students trying to switch to WA residency for education purposes only because they didn't get picked up for the WOI program.

If someone attempts to use a POB for the sole purpose of establishing residency in WA while living and working and being, in fact, an ID resident they will fail. However, if you've already been established as a WA resident through parents/high school graduation/work/taxes, having a POB shouldn't raise any flags. Also, having the other residency requirements - job, DL, paying taxes, voter registration - are kinda important.

lailanni:
You know, it never really snowed except for a handful of times when I was there. The freezing rain, however, was another story. We use to joke that the winter season didn't officially begin until that first car slide into the ditch on the road between Pullman and Moscow...

The good news is there is a free (for students, M-F) commuter bus between Pullman and Moscow on those days when you're just too chicken (or smart) to drive because of the weather: http://www.wheatlandexpress.com/commuterbus.html

As far as mobile homes; a lot do (see my "308" comment earlier 😛). If I had to do it over, though, I would've rented an apartment for 6-12 months first before buying a trailer/house. You can buy a whole lot more trailer for your buck during the school year than during the summer; listing prices go down when the trailers don't move before classes start in the fall...

If Barb R. hasn't retired yet, she should know if there is still a list of trailers/apartments/homes of graduating veterinary students being put together and distributed.

Another good resource is the associated sudents housing commission located at the Compton Union Building (CUB). They use to have a website where students could post/search for roommates and open/available apartments/houses/trailers; not sure if it's still active as I don't have the URL anymore. Also, don't forget about good old WSU housing; you are a WSU student, you know, even if you don't interact with the rest of the campus. A few people always seem to end up in graduate housing.

Thanks, Fetch! You rock!! 👍🙂

Is the weather bad often?

I know very little about the east side of the state... the only time we hear about the east side is when it has bad storms and awful cold temps. So I'm under the impression it's like hell frozen over. (thanks, king5 news)

Whenever we get a few inches of snow everything pretty much closes down, people stay home, and a bunch of cars get stuck in ditches. I'm guessing that people are more capable of handling snow/ice on the east side....

Then you should feel right at home. When Pullman gets a couple inches of snow everything pretty much closes down, people stay home and a bunch of cars get stuck in ditches...😀

Honestly, I'm struggling to remember what the weather was like. Must be that survival instinct/traumatic episode memory repression thingamajig they're always going on about...

Seriously, though. I can only think of maybe a handful or two of times I walked/rode the Pullman pony (transit system) to Bustad rather than drove because of the weather. But I've also lived up and down the Rockies. Although I am a winter-weather driving weenie. And trudging up "the hill" was a challenge for my vehicle at the time even when the roads were dry.

The real "hell" is harvest time. Don't drive around with your windows down and mouth open lest you want to end up with gritty teeth. Harvest dust can and does get into every nook and cranny of you and yours. Or when the wind changes direction and you get a breeze coming up the grade from Lewiston-Clarkson and the pulp mill...

Ah.

Good times. Good times.

Man! I wish Ellensburg were like that!! We got so much snow this past winter and not once did we get a snow day!! I drive a tiny car and it definitely does not do well in the snow!

Anyways...anyone willing to guess on when IS will be getting our letters?? I know...before the 13th, but that doesn't tell me much!! I am so anxious!! If I get in, I don't have to take classes next quarter!! I don't think time could go by any slower for me right now...

Hey, you and me both! I'm also done with classes this quarter if I'm accepted, and pull myself off the Oregon waitlist - they need some extra classes.

I'm thinking that if they really have things together (best case scenario) they mail them out the 10/11 mon/tues. Then we hear back the 12/13. Barb in the office said the 13, but I don't want to get my hopes up too early.

I'm telling my friends/family around the 15th just in case.

Whenever you get yours, I get mine the next day....:scared:

I am hoping by the 13th....but my friend asked in her interview the timeline for hearing back and the guy's immediate response was, "before the 13th!". I know in the interview invite it said something about sending them out within a week after they deliberate. How long could it possibly take to cut 30 people?? Here's hoping I am not one of those 30 though!!!!!!!!!!

Amen to that 🙂 I'm almost happier not to get this letter... since 'I don't know' is a little nicer than 'No.'

Dang, a phone call would sure be nice!

Next week will be an interesting week indeed :luck: :luck: :luck:

I know at least one person on campus here who received their acceptance letter today. So at least some letters have already been sent out 🙂. Sorry, I hope this doesn't make anyone anymore anxious! Good luck to all those waiting to hear.

I was definitely told after my interview that all letters would go out on the same day....

:luck: :luck: :luck: to all the in-staters!

ps - dingo, do you ride? Have a horse at school? If so I might have some questions for you if I get in.

kekemapa, you're our sentinel!!!

Sorry!!! I was at work all day!!!!

I GOT IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀

congratulations!!!

Congrats Kekemapa...

I'm Going too...just got back from work and seen the nice big envelop!

So incredibly excited now! GO COUG'S 😍!

Yay Bellepinay!!! Looks like neither of us have to go to Scotland!!!!! Congrats!!

Good luck to everyone who has to wait a little longer!!!:luck::luck:

Good news comes in the same envelope as the interview invite came in! My friend was waitlisted and hers came in a small envelope....so lets hope for some large envelopes!!!!!!!

Congrats kekemapa! I'll miss tag-teaming LSU...

yay kekemapa and bellepinay :hardy:

Oh why doesn't WSU tell you where you are in their waitlist? I was looking on their site and last year only 1 person did not accept an offer. So knowing where you stand could really change how you plan things. Gratz to all those who got the big brown envelope!

congrats to all the acceptances! looking forward to meeting everyone in the fall!

CONGRATS KEKEMAPA!!! 😀:hardy:😀:hardy:

sooo happy for you!! and congrats to all the others!!

Thanks bnicolec and mickeyspet!!! I can't wait to hear if any of the west-siders got in today!!!!!!! C'mon Lailanni!!!!!!!

😀😀😀Big brown envelope!!!:hardy::hardy::hardy:

YAY!!!!!

Hey guys, I'm a little confused about the second paragraph of the letter. It says that selection is conditional upon satisfactory completion of all required courses by August 12, 2008. Satisfactory completion is a 3.0 or higher.

Does this apply to only the current pre-reqs I'm taking this quarter -- or all pre-reqs I have ever taken?

For example, if someone got a 2.9 in organic chemistry in their junior year would they have to take organic chemistry over or else their admissions offer could be revoked?

You could interpret that 2nd paragraph in many ways......?

lailanni:

Congrats.

Take a deep breath.

You need to finish up your current course load at a 3.0, silly, not some obscure course you took "x" number of years ago. That wouldn't make much sense, would it, since that could add quarters/semesters onto someone's undergrad time...

It means you need to finish whatever classes you're currently taking that are pre-req's - in other words, you can't drop a class that's required just because you're now "in" nor can you slack off and flunk it.

Again, congratulations.

👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍

Thought so : ) Thanks! I had a few people read it, and agreed that it could be taken a few different ways. Of course, I'd take it the paranoid way

Wow Lailanni, that's great. Congratulations.:hardy:

Thanks everyone!!!! 😍 You're all so nice!!!

I celebrated with a large bag of chips, and will resume celebrating after I get my B in biochem....hehe...

Congrats to everyone!! :hardy: And good luck for those waiting on letters!!:luck::luck:

I know this is the WSU thread, but I do have to pipe in about Oregon.

OSU does not require terminal surgeries. That ended a few years ago, so I don't know why it is assumed that it is a requirement. There is a LA elective where you will perform terminal surgeries (though this is done at other schools such as CSU), but you can opt out and watch the same surgeries be performed at other clinics or in the hospital (that are non-terminal). This is what I was told.

Personally, I love Corvallis. There are problems with the school as I imagine there are with any school. The program has some great benefits: small class size, good community (close knit), beautiful location, and great experience opportunities (mentorship program this spring, required rotation at a humane society which will get you lots of hands on surgical experience, lots of club activities that you can be involved in even as a first year--I've already attended an ultrasound lab and learned mare palpation by ultrasound as well; and we just have lots of connections that were really good for me.

If anyone has any questions about OSU feel free to ask or PM me. I am sorry that you didn't like it athenaparthenos. Lailanni, I was rooting for you to come here but congrats on the WSU invite (and, yes, I'm a horrible lurker).

Sorry..done hijacking the thread for now. Don't be scared away from OSU--it is a great school with lots of good things going for it. 🙂 :hijacked:
