Wsu

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just in case anyone wanted to know...

Officially (from the office of the registrar, with the lady that does all the residency stuff):

If you are accepted as a WA state resident, they don't care if you live in Moscow. She said they do NOT check at all.

We pretty much gathered that, but I thought I'd make it official.

Anyone get an info packet yet? I'm curious to get it.

Thanks lailanni! There are so many great places to live in moscow, but I think I want to be closer to school where I can just walk a couple blocks and catch a bus. Still no info packet for me! I starting checking my mail all the time again!

Anyone know if any in-state people declined admission?? I am hoping my best friend will get off the alternate list!

I get so excited whenever I see this thread bumped up!

Do any of you know older vet students at WSU? I'm curious about which books I are "must haves" versus those that are rarely used. I obviously won't need this information for several more months, but I don't know anyone who has been at WSU in the last 20 years, so if you guys have any information about books I would love if you passed it along. I am slightly overenthusiastic about being in school again....

Thanks for the information about Moscow, lailanni. I'm 90% sure that I'm going to live there unless I find some fantastic place in Pullman (unlikely).

I know 2 first-years at WSU, I'll e-mail them and ask about books. That's a good idea! I'll definately post and let y'all know what they say.

I think they're having finals now or sometime soon so they may not write back right away.

I'm going to be definately living in Moscow. Not to bash Pullman or anything, but I really like Moscow. Plus they have that nice little bus that actually goes from Moscow to Pullman and stops right at the vet school! Woohoo!

If anyone is looking for a roomie, PM me and I'll send you an updated list from Barbara. There are quite a few vet students looking for another vet student. I'm under the impression this list will be going out with the info packet too.

Also for people looking for trailer housing in Pullman, I asked Abbie what the quieter places are. She said "As far as living away from parties...Golden Hill or Skyview Estates are two mobile home areas that are quieter (I lived in Golden Hills my senior year in college)."

hey there, I just got an email from a girl who is selling a trailer and has lowered the price for any interested parties. email and info to follow. I also noticed that there was a 2 bedroom trailer for rent in the $550 area, if you're not ready to buy yet. The pics didn't look too bad!

am asking 11k OBO. It is an older trailer (1966) but is in pretty good shape. With a coat of paint over the wood paneling it could even be cute. It is 720 sq ft with a good sized kitchen/dining room and living room. There are 2 bedrooms (the second one is pretty small), a bathroom, and a laundry room. The yard is fully fenced and pets are allowed. There is also a large storage shed on the property. Let me know if you have any questions or if you want to set up a time to see the place. You can either email me or call me at 509-432-6890.
Thanks,
Sarah

"Hi everyone.

I hope all is going well and I just wanted to let you know that I sent out the packets yesterday to everyone but the Pullman students. If you do not receive your packet by Monday, May 5th please let me know. If you have any questions it would probably be best to e-mail me. I will start taking time off next week for the summer and I can always do e-mail faster then playing phone tag.

Good luck to all those that are in finals or going to take finals. Take care and have a great summer and I will see you when you get to Pullman.

Barbara Hodson"

gotten via e-mail today 🙂 Wooohoo! packets!!

Woo Hoo!!! Got my packet in the mail today!!!!!! There is tons of cool info in it!

Now we can get our vetmed email addresses too!!!! And they give us a "big sib" to help us in our transition! I can't wait till August!!!

Go WSU people!

I am happy and excited for you guys... looking forward to hearing about the first year come autumn...

🙂

Anyone gotten a financial aid package yet?

I filled out the FAFSA back in Feb and haven't gotten anything from WSU about loans yet.

Anyone else hear back from them about fin aid?

I actually was checking myWSU for my financial aid stuff and it said I still had to file the FAFSA!! I emailed the financial aid office and they were able to confirm that I had filed my FAFSA and should expect a loan packet early June. This was about a week ago, so don't worry yet!

Thanks for the info Kekemapa!

As for books, I talked to my awesome Big Sib today.

She said you really don't need all the stuff on the list. She bought some of those books and never had to open them.

Here's what she said were must haves:

Notes for all the classes
Evan's Guide to the Dissection of the Dog
Textbook of Vet Anatomy (more useful 2nd semester)
A veterinary dictionary, only if you can find it cheap/used

Not really used:
She didn't really use the Histology text enough to warrant buying it. Survived just fine without the Vet Consult option on books.
Miller's Anatonmy of the Dog was something she flipped through on reserve.
Apparently the Molecular Biology of the Cell text is free online (save $140!) and for that class the required readings were printed out and given to them.

So yay! That's some good news! I was a little freaked out about how much it could cost... So I'll be ordering approx $200+ of books, and then the dissection kit, microscope fee, yadda yadda...

ALSO there are places you can get free printing! Woohoo!

Hi, I just found this site! I am looking forward to meeting all of you! I have been at WSU/in Pullman for 3 years so if anyone has questions about them feel free!
Yay class of 2012!!

awesome. So I've been finishing up my biochem pre-req here this summer and so far I'm having a good time. Seriously, it is pretty great here and everyone in the vet school is incredibly welcoming and helpful. There is a free bus system and it isn't too bad bike commuting either. If any of you fellow c/o 2012'ers have questions I'd be happy to help out. Also if anyone is thinking about working in the fall, there are all kinds of lab aide positions, pm me and I can see about helping you connect with someone looking for help in their lab. Woohoo, I can't wait til our class starts arriving, but so far the 2nd and 3rd years are a great bunch to hang with!!

also, thanks for the info from your big sib lailanni, mine is MIA... anything else you'd like to share is most definitely appreciated!

Hey guys!

For all of you that have gotten in to WSU, do you know when the first tuition installment is due? I'm waitlisted, and trying to figure out if/when people might decline. This waiting game is torture!

Thanks a bunch! :luck:

Hey guys! I got the next packet of info about orientation in the mail today! It has our cabin assignments in it for the week of COLE! I am in the Bengal Orissa one. Only 1 month until COLE!!!

Yay for Camp Cole! I finally made the move to pullman monday, I've got the papers about the retreat somewhere amongst my mess of boxes. I believe I'm in the Japan Cabin. 👍

I think that tuition is due by the first day of classes, August 25th. But I could be wrong. I would assume that people would last-minute decline by Aug 18th (the start of orientation).

I talked to Dr Talcott and unless you're a WICHE student, the spots are pretty solidly filled. As far as wiche goes there is one arizona student on the fence and her spot would need to be filled by another arizona wiche student. Just fyi for those on the waitlist.

i have not completely decided to apply to washington state university. i logged onto their supplemental page and the unique aspect i noticed right away is that one must pay first. most of the other supplementals i have logged onto for consideration have been pay as the last step, like vmcas. before i pay, can someone describe how involved the supplemental for wsu is? is it like csu (very involved) or oksu (not very involved)?
thanks for any replies - i appreciate your time.

Hi Efab - To answer your question about the WSU supplemental, it is definitely one of the more "less involved" applications. It asks very basic biographical information; colleges attended and your cummulative GPA at each; some box-check questions about how you heard about WSU, reasons for applying, and veterinary interests; and the most time-consuming part is the listing of your pre-requisites (which does not take long at all!). This is not a supplemental that has you answer any short essay questions, but it gives you a chance to list animal, veterinary, or research experience that you might not have already listed in your VMCAS application.

I was also suprised by the "pay-in-advance" aspect, but had to bite the bullet and just go for it. I was happy, however, to see that it was one of the less time-consuming supplementals. Good luck!

2004 WSU grad here. I work as an emergency vet in Seattle after doing an internship in ER and critical care at Dove Lewis in Portland. I love my job by the way.

I was just parousing the posts here and got a kick out of the comments. Takes me back to my infancy in vet med.

Just wanted to extend my willingness to give advice to any of you who want it or have questions. I wish you all the best of success. Enjoy yourself while you are in school. And DON'T wait until your senior year to get over to the teaching hospital. There are so many ways to get involved, see cases, listen to rounds, etc. I was a much better clinician when I graduated by working in the ICU.

Pullman is not many student's dream city to live in but you are there for the education and experience. If I had distractions of sunny beaches and big city life I might have had problems. Go to the gym, play IM sports, go to the river, whatever. Just try to stay balanced, your brains will work better.

Also take the opportunity to appreciate all aspects of the exposure you will get. I probably will never bottle feed a camel again but it was fun while I was doing it. I had a great bull calf under my care named Boris I will never forget. I got to play with grizzly cubs that were part of a cardiology study. Scrubbed in for brain surgery on a cria. Successfully hand reared a twin foal, etc.

Anyway, I need to get back to work but thought I would post a welcome to the new students and good luck to all applying. You are entering a fantastic profession!

bumping up again.

still struggling with whether or not to apply to wsu.

can anyone new or in 3-4 year tell me why you are ultimately psyched you chose wsu?

like every vet school, it seems that their program is v. diverse from wildlife rehab to a full range of equine, sa and la medicine and e'thing else is available through shadowing or electives.

i searched for their alternative surgery program on the website, but found no results under that name. i like that they leave participation in terminal surgeries up to the individual, but many schools do this as well.

i guess i am having difficulty answering the question - why wsu - and wonder what others have observed in their program that i am missing - some unique aspects regarding wsu that aren't readily apparent.

Having always loved WSU, and watched their changes over the last 20 years, I have always found that they are always leading in new and innovative procedures. They do not hinder research, which has lead to some awesome discoveries. They also shared their nuclear medical center with "human" medicine, so have better access for the best equipment. There is no limit for student advancement, and many travel all over the world during the summers for mini internships (friend of mine's daughter went to Africa).

hey guys! just wanted to continue on with the old thread for this cycle as well! i got an interview at wsu (IS) on 1/27. sooooooooooooooo excited, and of course nervous! so be ready in-staters for those notices! let me know if anyone is interviewing as well! i'd love to share the anxiety!

oh yes, i can't seem to find the sample interview questions anymore on the website. does anyone happen to have saved them somewhere? if so, that would be AWESOME if you can pass it along 🙂 thanks!

I am still waiting to hear too, but I am OOS.

good luck on the interview :luck:

Congrats Mstweetie!

I had a mock interview there last month, and the questions were the same as the typical ones you can google online. I couldn't find them currently on the site either. IM me if you can't find them and I'll send you the hardcopy I printed off.

Go Cougs!

I think I still have my binder of interview info/prep stuff. I think.

Someone message me when I get back into town (slightly before the 12) and I'll try to dig it up. It has all the interview prep questions.

Just as an FYI, all the people I saw at interviews were in a suit, or something that looked just as professional. Except one girl who looked terrible and she didn't make the cut. I'm sure that's not the reason she didn't make it, but it definately didn't help her out. (We're talking messy, messy hair with brown spandex pants, a poorly fitting yellow T-shirt and huge dirty sketchers sneakers).

And for anyone traveling to this interview, you ought to know that if you're flying into Moscow/Pullman and they're having bad weather they will divert into Lewiston/Clarkston. Which is about 45 driving minutes away from where you want to be. So fly in the night before just to avoid a potential problem. I stayed at the La Quinta in Moscow and it was great, would recommend. They put out cookies at night.

dreamvet and BrumleyVet -- good luck too!!! hopefully oos won't have to wait too long...

thanks for the advice! also, does anyone know stats of # interviews to # of acceptances for in-staters for the last year? i'm trying to figure out my chances 🙂

lailanni -- im planning to fly into pullman... hows the weather like down there now? do people usually get rental cars and drive to campus?

c'mon fellow in-staters! good luck everyone!!!!

Right now I'm in the Seattle area so I don't personally know how the weather is. But I can tell you that it's pretty crappy. I called the person looking after my trailer in Moscow and they've had one hell of a snow storm. Snow everywhere, pretty bad compared to what they're used to.

I'm not sure if that will affect planes, but if you're renting a car you'll want to ask for something that can handle snow/ice. It hasn't been above freezing there in a few weeks at least. But who knows, things could change up before interviews.

(mstweetie - I'll try and find a picture of my suit, I'm at my parents place and don't have my laptop. If I don't get back to you message me around the 12th and I'll see what I have back at school)

lailanni - you'd be shocked if you were here. I think we now have more snow than Alaska!

mstweetie - have you looked at flying into Spokane? You could rent a car and drive to Pullman. Should be alot cheaper depending on where you're coming from. Allow ALOT of extra time for travel.

On the upswing - if you love to ski or snowboard, it's the best conditions they've had here in a long time!

Dang. I'm not looking forward to diving back next week. That bad, eh?

mstweetie, I flew into Spokane with an older friend who rented a car and we drove into Pullman. It is much cheaper to fly into Spokane ($39 vs $150). I knew a few others who did the same thing.

Thing is, that was in late Feb and there wasn't any snow. Last year during a bad snow storm they closed the road from Spokane to Pullman. So you kind of have to hedge your bets depending on the weather.

Either way, you really should be fine. I'd echo Brumley and say give yourself plenty of travel time.

When you're in town give a holler (any of you guys) and we'll show you around. We can grab something to eat and you can Q & A us 🙂

AWESOME! thanks lailanni -- you've been such great help for me this app. cycle! i hope its my first, and last! :xf::xf::xf::xf::xf:

i'm probably going to fly to pullman - i don't want to risk not being able to get there b/c of the snow and being supper stressed about it. i'm going to fly in the day before so if anything i'll be able to come get to pullman (hopefully the flight won't get diverted and/or the roads won't be closed).

seattle just got a major snow storm -- haven't seen one like it in the 22 yrs ive been alive over here! we had MAJOR snow = not being able to drive = waiting for the bus for 2 hours avg = at least 4 hours to get to work! EKKK! snow is no fun anymore.

any other WSU applicants out there on SDN? i feel like there's so few of us over here!!!

Don't worry, you'll get plenty used to snow 🙂 The Moscow Pullman area looked like the Seattle storm. Except it looked like that for a few weeks and temps got to 0 (below 0 if you count wind chill). Then they got even more snow. When you come over here invest in some snow tires 😉

But the cold isn't that bad. Its a dry cold, not a damp cold. As a west sider I actually find the damp cold to be worse.

However this year and last year were both record breaking, so maybe you won't see much snow your entire 4 years.

Yes, they do interview OOS students... and I think there's a chance we might hear from them soon? Might be just wishful thinking though...

From what I heard about 2012 interviews...They interviewed about 80 people for 55 in-state spots. I have no clue what they are doing this year though.

Congratulations!! Maybe I will get to meet some of you at your interview!

Don't stress after the interview...I thought mine was absolutely horrible but apparently they liked me anyways!!

I don't know how they are doing it this year, but I think they are switching it around because last year they interviewed OOS first and they found out pretty early. All of us IS people were interviewed late in February, so maybe someone will know the dates for OOS. If you are concerned you can always email Barb! She was great to me during applications last year.

Good Luck!

A couple of my classmates are interviewing (in state) the end of this month. Haven't heard about OOS.

My friend got an email from wsu in regards to that blog. I didnt receive any... i dont know if i should look too much into that but ill admit i feel a little left out 🙁
lol.
Anyone else receive or not receive that email??

Anyone else receive or not receive that email??

Nope - no email. The last email I got from WSU was in November letting me know my application was complete.

Just a heads up everybody, interview invites are going to current addresses for OOS students too (big beige envelope!). Mine was dated Jan 12th and got here today (MD). I guess it finally really is mid-january. 😀

And from the looks of it they're giving us a very full schedule too. There's a student-faculty mixer (mult dates and times), tours, and you can sit in on classes again this year. This should be very neat, I can't wait. (Here's hoping for no snow!)

Just checked the mailbox -- no news OOS for me yet
*FINGERS CROSSED!!*

I got the email from Abbie about the blogs, and I'm not even an applicant yet. If you're on the mailing list, you get it. Here's what the blog said about their schedule:

"For those of you anxiously awaiting some sort of notification on the admissions process...here's the best I have for you at this point: the actual WSU-CVM interview dates!
Washington: January 26-28
Idaho: January 29-30
Out-of-Area: February 9-13 "

You can access the blog at http://blogs.vetmed.wsu.edu/prospectivestudents/

so. . . .i'm guessing that if i don't get a letter in the mail by tomorrow/saturday, then i'm not invited for this round of interviews.

Anyone know if there are going to be more than one round of interviews this cycle? 🙁

The interview dates are the only ones scheduled and they don't really make exceptions. But I believe they send out invites/non-invites on the same day, so you should hear something regardless.
