With so many people posting schedules, I figured it would be a good idea to post one while pointing out that if you are aiming for the MCAT this January, then it's time to dive in head first. This schedule is ideally for the people who have gotten our books recently (or have them on the way). It requires the newest biology books and organic/biochemistry books. It requires commitment to staying on task and a willingness to push through the pain on certain days. It also has some light days for recuperation.

This is a 120-day study schedule designed for the new Berkeley Review books, some of which may not be out for home-study at the time this is being posted. It is designed based on both the topics the MCAT tests as well as 25 years of insights in to how most students learn best. It emphasizes review, applications, and most of all test questions. There are a few things to consider at first.
  • The schedule contains no days off. This is because we have found that when a student schedules a day off, it quickly turns into a catch-up day. With that type of day to fall back on, many students fall off pace. We believe in scheduling light days about once per week and then earning that day off by doing your work in advance.

  • The first full-length exam is schedule for when about 90% of your review and preparation is done. Too many students start too early and are unfamiliar with the some of the material. This wastes a practice exam. The main purpose of a practice exam is to work on test-taking skills, timing, and strategy. If you have material that is unfamiliar, then that purpose is undermined. This is why we are strong believers that diagnostic exams in the beginning are a complete waste and can actually be damaging. Most questions are missed because of (1) a careless error due to lack of focus, (2) a misinterpretation of the question, (3) a computational error, or (4) an error in reasoning. Few questions are missed from a complete lack of knowledge, and diagnostic exams claim to inform a student what they need to study. It can be misleading information based on test design and student focus. You don't want to review excessively in areas you already know.

  • Homework is laid out in phases. Phase I is designed for reviewing the concepts and re-familiarizing with the material. You are not meant to time yourself and should take time to write down notes as needed. Phase II is meant to train for timing and stress, as you get one minute per question and two minutes per passage. Some questions are intentionally long or ambiguous. This is a major part of your development. The last phase is meant to be done a few weeks after you reviewed the topic, so you can re-familiarize if you started to forget some of the information. These passages incorporate material from other sections and simulate the MCAT the best of all of the passages.

Hey,
I would appreciate it if you could help me determine what phase 1, 2, and 3 would be for the books, so I can follow the schedule that you have provided for the new MCAT 2015.
These are the books that i currently have:
-The 2013 version of the General Chemistry (is divided into 3 phases)
-The NEW UPDATED 2015 Biology books have 15 passages and 100 questions after each section. (phase 1, 2, 3???)
-The 2013 version of Physics books has a 25 question section and then a 52 question section with 7 passages(phase 1, 2, 3???)
-The 2013 version of the Organic Chemistry books has 25 review questions and then a 52 question practice exam with 7 passages. (phase 1, 2, 3???)

@BerkReviewTeach could you please clarify what you mean by Phase? For example, would gen chem phase I be Passage Schedule I : Passages I-III & VI-VIII?

And I also had the same question as @bambam11 . How do you divide the biology book into phases??

Week 18
Day 120
ACTUAL M C A T (yeah!!!)

I noticed there is no mention of AAMC materials (Q pack, OG, FLs) in this schedule... I am sitting for Jan 22 and still have all of AAMC materials and the 4 TBR exams left to take... How should I best utilize them?

Too much too fast no break = disaster.

Need to have one day in there (full day) where you do nothing MCAT related.

Very true. That's why the first note listed there is:
  • "The schedule contains no days off. This is because we have found that when a student schedules a day off, it quickly turns into a catch-up day. With that type of day to fall back on, many students fall off pace. We believe in scheduling light days about once per week and then earning that day off by doing your work in advance."
A light day (one with two hours of scheduled work or less) can easily become a day off by doing that work in advance. When you earn a day off, you get much more out of it and don't get hampered by guilt. This schedule has the chance for about twelve days off if you pay the price the day before.

Hey,
I would appreciate it if you could help me determine what phase 1, 2, and 3 would be for the books, so I can follow the schedule that you have provided for the new MCAT 2015.

Admittedly, the phases are a bit different from one printing to the next. This schedule is based on the new organic chem, gen chemistry, and physics books which have (will have) two phases at the end of each chapter (one aimed at working on concepts and material and the other to work on timing) followed by a cumulative review exam for each chapter (to act as phase 3).

For the books you have, it would be best to split 52-question exams in half and use them for phases 2 and 3. For the biology books, it is best to do every third passage (1, 4, 7, 10, and 13 for Phase I and so on).

@BerkReviewTeach
Studying has been going well so far. Another question though... When referring to CARS Set 1, 2, 3, 4... etc. there are diagnostic sets, and non-diagnostic sets. How should we go about tackling these. There are only four non-diagnotstic. Do we do these in conjunction with the diagnostics for 1, 2, 3, and 4?

Thanks , Carl

@BerkReviewTeach Is there a 100-day study schedule for the 2015 TBR set? I am confused as to where I should be incorporating the Phase III. Basing my schedule off Sn2Ed but loved the 120 day schedule you all provided for the new material.

thanks for sharing this. i've been tryna follow it for the past couple days but i'm struggling/failing miserably: i'm working full-time (leave home at 7, get to library at 5, study until 9).

i'll be taking my mcat on the 6th of may. do uou by any chance have any headers on how to work this schedule with a job - or whether it is at al possible? 4-5 hours/day on weekdays isn't cutting it (weekends are fine) and i'd reallllly hate to have to push my test date since i'm a reapplicant--

any feedback would be nice, thanks!

Is content in this schedule still up to date? I assume there is more concrete knowledge about whats on the new MCAT a year after his post, no?

Thanks TBR, this schedule looks great and I plan on using it alongside your books for my nearly complete MCAT prep.

The only question I have is this, I know that the Psychology book actually only covers psychology, there is not much sociology in it. I am planning on supplementing the required dose of sociology review into this schedule. I am planning on using a combo of the Khan Academy Sociology videos alongside the Princeton Review Psych/Sociology book. Would anyone have any recommendations (or even experience) on how to incorporate this into this schedule?

Incorporating Kahn passages for the psychology and sociology section is a great idea. They actually fit nicely into the six lecture categories. One nice thing about Kahn psych passages is that they come in pairs, so that you can do the odd numbered ones first to review the subject matter ands then come back later and do the even numbered ones as phase II homework.

Approximately how many hours a day does this schedule require? Is is for someone studying full-time 8ish hours a day? I know it will vary student to student but I am trying to determine a schedule for about 3-4 hours a day in the fall, full time over winter break and the test in January. I can also start in the summer.

This is a blast from the past. This schedule is based on days of roughly, 2 hours (about 10%), 4 hours (about 25%), 6 hours (about 40%), and 8 hours (about 25%.) These are estimates and your mileage may vary. The idea is to have some power days and some light days.
