Glasgow c/o 2015!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got my welcome packet on saturday 3/13, and i believe they were sent the Friday a week prior. There wasn't too much new stuff in the packet, so I was kind of disappointed. The only thing that I was unsure about is it tells you you need to submit a 1000 pound deposit, but not what conversion rate you should use. If any of the people who have done this before would like to chime in it would be much appreciated.

Well that's a disappointment. I was hoping there would be some new stuff! 🙁

What do you mean what conversion rate to use? If you wire it over, then you just use whatever exchange rate is that day. If it so happens they process it later and the exchange rate changes, then they will either credit your account, or let you know the difference. My guess is right about now you will be sending over something like $1600? i haven't looked at the exchange rate in a while, but it has been sitting there for quite some time.

I got my acceptance packet today. Just a welcome letter and some information on semester schedules. The deposit and acceptance letter is due on April 15th. Can't wait to start getting things going!

Rachael got her packet this week. Lots of questions, and a bit terrifying for all of us. I don't think Rach will be able to bring her Pit Bull rescue, after talking to DEFRA it appears she is in danger of an outright refusal, or worse they would seize her upon arrival and euthanize her... not an option. Thanks for setting up the facebook group for Glasgow 2015, that is great. Rach still hasn't signed up for SDN but I'm working on her... she was in Colombia for spring break, and now with the overwhelming task of getting ready for fall, it's a bit much.

I realize it will all work out, and we will look back and say it was no big deal, but right now it's confusing... And we have been to the UK numerous times. Thanks to all of you old timers for sharing your info. If anyone in c/o 2015 wants to contact Rach on facebook her name is Rachael Krieger, and in the meantime I will tell her about the new group. Mama :laugh:

Did you guys mail your acceptance and deposit in or did you fax it?

Is there anything that we need to buy in advance before coming to Scotland? I keep hearing about coveralls and boots and what not and started wondering about what I didnt know I needed this fall and when I should buy them.

Don't buy them until you get to Glasgow..it's way cheaper, and you will want all the room you can get in your suitcases. Some people brought their old whitecoats from home, but other than that, coveralls and wellies are too bulky and heavy. If there is a particular brand of something you like, bring that, but try to avoid bringing shampoos and stuff..they are just too heavy and 10:1 they have it in Scotland.

hmm i hadn't even thought about white coats. So we should buy those ourselves then? Also should we buy stethoscopes or do we not need those until 4th and 5th year.

You can get them from the school, I was simply saying if you already had some from work or research, you could use those. You can buy the stethoscopes from the school as well. You don't start using them until 2nd year though. Sometime in August, you're sent a list of stuff you can order from the GUVMA store. I went elsewhere instead of GUVMA...there are plenty of places around Glasgow and online to get what you need. The only things I bought through GUVMA were gloves and a dissection kit. And the only book you absolutely must have is Guide to the Dissection of the Dog.

What are our options for health insurance?

NHS!! And it's FREE!!!! Oh snap....let the debate begin...😉

You should also get BVA student insurance before you go on EMS in the UK...it's 30 quid for the year....but more info when you actually get to Glasgow.

Wow! This is a great thread! I'm excited to be joining u all in Sept in Glasgow... also terrified out of my mind of all the diff changes and what seems like a mountain of things to be working on doing. I have 2 small dogs, that are my "special" children and I'm still debating about bringing them but have already done their titers and all that jazz a while back in preparation. For those of u already there, what do u recommend? Do you actually get to spend time with them (outside of school, trying to take advantage of traveling or what not that first year, etc). With their medical issues I'm afraid to bring them and afraid to leave them. This of course will determine where I live.
Also tons of questions about stuff over there like the weather and types of clothes to bring and what all i should be filling my 2 suitcases with.
Buying electronics--- hairdryer, etc better to bring from home and get adapter and converter or buy there?
Are there any special computer/laptop requirements we should be aware of? If not, what is the best thing to buy that won't break the bank and still get the job done...
Sorry so long, my head's spinning and I still have a jazillion diff things I am wondering about

Breathe!!!!

First off, congrats!!

Lots of people bring their pets. There is plenty of time to spend with them, and if you need a pet sitter, you have about half the vet school willing to help you out, no joke, so traveling isn't usually an issue.

You're from NC, yes?? I would say Glasgow weather is sort of like...the North-East...rather mild winters, but wet and damp, and usually quite chilly at night. Pants, sweaters, layers....think fall/winter seasons mostly when packing, minus heavy snow gear.

I honestly would save you space for clothes and such...buy electronics when you get here..it's not worth it to bring them, and they usually burn out with an adapter. Your computer should be fine...just bring an adapter for the plug.

You will all be receiving a "Big Vet" in the near future, so they can definitely help you out and answer lots of little questions too, no worries!! You all have plenty of time to sort your new and exciting Glasgow lives out!! It is only April after all 😉

PS...you all should post yourselves on the Final Decisions thread....poor Peachy is all by her lonesome!!!!!

Finally sent in my deposit and got confirmation~ It still hasn't set in that I'm moving to SCOTLAND!
I'm so relieved to hear that there will be enough time for pets, and how possible it would be to travel! I would feel so terrible about bringing my dog and not being able to spend time with(read spoil) him.. 🙄

BTW, I was wondering if anyone happens to come from the Boston or even NY/NJ area and if they'd like to meet up??

That would be perfect! I think I will be here most of the summer, as long as I'm not visiting Glasgow. Can't wait!😀

Thanks ShortNSweet! I also did wonder, if I did decide to stay in univeristy housing, what order would u rank them for someone who is 28 y/o and interested in being involved and socializing, hanging out and all that fun stuff but not so interested in dorm life as it is in the US in undergrad. I saw earlier PJ didn't rec Wolfson as top choice. From what I've read it looks like QMH should be ok, but no other comments besides those two options (i'm still flip-floppin on the whole dog thing---lots of issues to deal with finding housing/roommates, pet insurance?, just getting em over there, etc and I think my babies would have to be quarantined for at least 1 wk if I came over about the 10th or so...FAVR titers done on March 17th and are good). How far in advance do u recommend that we arrive ( I know there is a limit of a month i think bc of visa) but earlier folks seemed to be getting there way in advance and I was wondering why/if that would be necessary. Also, is n e one else freakin out and find it ironic that US govt federal funding is basically on lock-down until all "training" is done in may/june and we cannot insure we have full funding until after we already have to pay our non-refundable deposit (bc our acceptance stuff tells us to know this for sure before we accept and send the deposit)?
Hope everyone's had a great weekend!

Cough, off the record, I would say try to stay away from University housing if at all possible. The prices are astronomical for what you are getting in my opinion, and you can get a much nicer private flat in a better location. Soon you will start getting e-mails about flats for rent and places to share..I would look at those first. That being said, if you must use Uni Housing, I would rank them in this order, based on my friends who live in said places:
1. Kelvinhall
2. QM
3. Wolfson (avoid avoid avoid...a lot of vets end up here, but it is VERY dorm like, full of little 18 yr olds who want to party during the week, and by the sounds of it, you want to avoid this yes?? )

I came over about a week before Orientation and was able to get all settled in and over the jetlag. I don't really see a reason to come any earlier.

Did everyone get the invite to the US events? I'm probably gonna go to the one in Newport Beach. Anyone else?

Here I am again, even though I said I was turning this over to the real vet student... truth is I love reading your entries very much. You are all so incredibly helpful. I am coming over to the UK to see a good friend who lives near London. We will be traveling up to Glasgow Tuesday, May 4th through Thursday, May 6th, just to look around. I would love to buy anyone a beer (or dinner) if they are interested in meeting up, and have the time. I swear I am not a nutter (I am actually gainfully employed by the FBI, do not resemble the Men in Black, and do have a sense of humor!!), just so damn excited about Rachael going to vet school, plus I love coming to the UK and will exploit ANY reason to do so. My friend is actually from Glasgow and she is just going to show me around. Let me know if anyone is interested in the beer... just tell me when and where. I promise not to talk your ear off.:laugh::laugh: BTW, Rach got an email after doing the grad and grad plus stuff which basically said those will cover tuition and 13K for living but nothing else. Not sure where the extra cash is coming from when I hear about the 65k dollars available through loans... any pointers? Looking forward to seeing you all if it works out. BTW, if anyone needs something from home (oreo's, products, etc) let me know and I will bring it to you. MamaGman😀

We live in Maryland, and I am sure Rachael (the real vet student) would love to meet up with some of the c/o 2015... If you get something together, let us know. Everyone is always welcome to come here to Columbia, MD if they can manage it, as we would love to host a pre-launch party.

Can Rachael please go to Edinburgh? I want you to hang out with (we are probably close to the same age ). As an aside, my brother is an agent with DCIS and works closely with FBI. We are in VA. I am so excited for you and your daughter and hope our Edinburgh group can meet up with some Glasgow peeps some day.

Take care!!
