This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Can't wait to get this cycle going.

Hope to see some of my fellow Virginians!

Just got the secondary invite.

I have a question about the "ties to WV" portion. My husband has family that lives in WV, but he isn't particularly close to them and we haven't been to visit them in WV. Should I include this anyway? Or just say no ties? And if I do include it, how extensively should I talk about it? Can I just say "my husband's family" or do I need to list aunts, uncles, etc.?

Got the invite as well. I went general, no specifics. I would mention it, doesn't seem like it would hurt at all.

+1 oos!

No secondary from here yet 😳😳😳😳

I was verified a long time ago...

Are we still thinking secondary= interview? Also got my secondary yesterday. OOS, but from a neighboring one, feel like I have pretty strong state ties.

I'm OOS: 3.68, 3.51, 29S

Do I apply? My only tie to WV is the New River Gorge, something I really want to climb

Whoa, was unaware of this.... Just mailed in my secondary, if this is true then awesome.

From post #25 of the 2012-2013 WVU thread:

"i called last week and they told me secondary does indeed mean interview. they snail-mail it after they receive our essays and verify our letters of recommendation."

MSAR also says secondaries are sent to "select applicants"

You just made my day brohemian. e-high five

👍 Can anyone please post the secondary essays? Thank you!

1. Can you tell me something about yourself (quality or something you have done) that makes you the most proud?

2. Health care involves working with people from diverse social, cultural, and religious backgrounds. What in your life experiences or philosophy will help you work effectively with others whose life experiences have been very different than your own?

3. Tell us of a challenging event or a difficult obstacle in your life and how you overcame it.

4. Have you ever done anything that you have really regretted and what do you wish you would have done instead?

Is it worth applying here if you have no WV ties? I'm OOS 3.6/30

What is the word/character count for each?

What is the word/character count for each?

There is no limit, but the directions say "about half a page" for each. You type them up, and have to mail them in along with a few other items (2x2 picture, $100 check, signature page, and banner application).

There is also a brief online application which asks you to describe your ties to WV.

Wow no online secondary? Snail mail? Yikes.

Recieved secondary today. Sucks its not online. I am OOS also. How much did you guys write for the WV ties part? I have no real ties so I was just thinking about BSing a paragraph?

Be careful what you write. My friend got called out in his interview about ties. Turned out not so good for him..

Is anyone else on here applying early decision? And has anyone that sent in their secondary had their check cashed yet? I keep looking to see if it's cleared or not, because I would expect them to cash it as soon as they get it. It's been 12 days since I sent it out and still nothing.

Are we sure that receiving a secondary=receiving an interview? I called admissions and they said there is another screening process after the secondaries.

I received this e-mail on July 11th.

Your online secondary application information has been received. Once your secondary application materials have been received and reviewed, your only confirmation will come in the form of a mailed interview letter.
Thank you,

Seems like secondary=interview to me.

Not ED, but my check has also yet to be cashed. I sent mine in right about the time you did.

Anyone who mailed their secondary had their check deposited yet?

I mailed my stuff in yesterday!! I get FAP so I won't get the confirmation of a cancelled check to let me know they got it. Should I have sent registered mail?

Nope, still hasn't been cashed. Sent out out my secondary 18 days ago. Hopefully soon.

Got secondary! I hope hope hope it really means interview invite : )

Wouldn't worry about check cashing. I applied two cycles ago (year off in between) and trying again this time. I think I remember it taking a really long time (month?) for them to cash my check. Guess it's just not that big of a priority to them. Also when I applied... Secondary = Interview. I got the secondary again this time but was a little hesitant because it came pretty quickly after being verified so I'm not sure how much screening took place... Fingers crossed though!! PS Beth Ann is super sweet and WVU is very attentive to your questions. It may be old school with snail mail but they run everything super efficiently!

Thank you for the info! So were you waitlisted?? They might have something internal that favors applicants that had been previously waitlisted. Just a thought : )

Yes, I was waitlisted. Hoping for better luck this time because I really liked the school! We'll find out soon enough if Secondary = II. Last time it sounded as though you really had to bomb your secondary essays to not get an interview.

Same! Waitlisted after interview last cycle and I just received the secondary today. Woooo! Hope secondary still = interview like last year. I'd love to go here 🙂

Hey guys, just received the secondary. Does anyone know if living in an adjacent state to WV (I live in Northern VA) is considered as having ties to the state? Thanks!

Just got the secondary today! I'm reading through the directions, and I just want to clarify; did everyone send in the signature page, the banner app, the essays, and a check?

I don't know for sure, but I think adjacent states are given preference, but not quite "ties to the state" status. Might as well list it for the question if you don't have anything else.

Thanks! Is anyone else able to clarify the English requirement? I have AP credit that gives me English Composition credit, but I didn't take any actual English courses, do you think this will count? (don't worry, I emailed them already, I just wanted to see if anyone else had already asked and gotten an answer)

I wouldn't write this in. They can see that you are from Northern VA and are close to the area. I don't believe this is what they mean by ties.

For anyone else with this question, I called and Beth Ann said that would be fine as long as it's on your transcript
