Welcome to a new home. To kick the proverbial tires, does anyone know if any school other than Tech has a laptop brand requirement? My Dad is offering to help buy a new one for graduation but I thought I should look into this so I wouldn't have to immediately turn around and buy a new one if I got in to med school for 2009. And don't worry, I'm not getting a Mac.

if you can hold off until next fall, i would. there will be better/cheaper stuff. plus, you never know what the requirements will be at your school.

could you take a raincheck on the gift? unless you're hurting for a laptop now, that's what i'd do.

Guess the old RoT thread was kind of done for, huh?

A&M is requiring tablets for all their peoples. There are "recommended" brands, but not a specific brand requirement. They recommend 2 Gateways and a Dell.

I might have to go with a raincheck if A&M is requiring a tablet. Trouble is, my laptop now is on its last legs. I bought Diablo 2 (Blizzard Classic!) on Amazon only to have my DVD drive die on me 2 days later. I also don't have a working battery and the bottom left corner of my screen is detached from the rest of the body. Are there any other requirements that people know about? Aside from Tech and A&M?

I think Baylor, UTH, and UTHSCSA don't require tablets although they do have certain performance requirements. I think otherwise they'd prefer you to have a PC.

TCOM provides a specific tablet for you and, of course, you pay for it.

UTH's requirements are pretty basic aside from no macs, but people are getting around it I hear.

At TCOM you have to buy whatever computer they decide on each year. It's part of your fees I believe.

Ummm... flag please?

Someone needs to make sure the next batch of application warriors keep up all of the traditions of the Republic. Maybe we should make a list. 😀

if you buy a brand new computer, it will almost certainly be up to par with what the school wants.

I refuse to go to a school that doesn't allow Macs. SUCH BLASPHEMY! 😛

haha, yea!!! macs are so much better. plus, if you need windows, you can install it on any mac with an intel processor. so who needs a pc!

That's a good idea. And thanks for the correction on that flag bit!

good deal. i'll start. people can add on.

1. Number each thread sequentially, and attach a kick a$$ name to it. Name can be derived via a vote. Because, after all, General Sam Houston intended for the Republic to be a democracy.
2. ALWAYS raise at the flag at the beginning of each new thread. Can be found at <http://politicsoffthegrid.files.wordpress.com/2007/05/cometakeit.jpg>
3. New threads are started after 1000 posts.

That's all I have...

I'm fairly new to the Republic of Texas threads so I don't have any traditions to post but I do want to know if anyone has any advice on which OOS med schools to apply to. Preferably schools that don't charge OOS tuition.
Thanks🙂

Macs are nice, except that they cost significantly more than a similarly spec'd PC. I am a Linux type a dude. Love me some Asus Eee PCs. Too bad I have to buy a tablet for A&M. . .

so why install Windows on it, then?

Because Macs are prettier! I literally had someone tell me that was the reason they chose mac over pc. 😱

I've used both macs and pcs. My mac never froze or gave me any problems that I can think of. Can't say the same for the pc.. in my opinion osx is just made better than windows. The only reason you still need windows is because we're in a time where macs are just getting popular, so not every single program is available for osx. Soon, this won't be the case anymore. It's not about the casing, its about the system. Not only is it made better, it's more user friendly (all my opinions, of course).

well, i love my pc and macs are counterintuitive for me since i have been on pcs since i was like 5. the whole world practically runs on pcs as well. if you're only going to use your mac at home and never try to work with other systems or need support, then go for the mac, but i personally don't see why you'd want to make things harder on yourself by having to load boot camp or whatever foolishness you guys use to have office and windows on a mac.

when the entire world switches to macs, then i'll consider it. as far as the freezing issue, is it that big of a deal? restart the thing and move on. it doesn't happen all that often either. for me, freezing once in several months is better than wonky OSX. i'm not a computer dork though.

i guess in the end it's a matter of personal preference. 🙂

I didn't respond to your comment army because such arguments never end well.

Glad to see the new RoT thread is off to such a great start, chock full of information for 2009 applicants to TMDSAS and other fine schools!! 😛

HA! agreed.

the argument is pointless. us mac people know how superior macs are, so we won't relent.

pc people are enjoying the bliss of ignorance, so they won't either.

so let's get back too supporting our 2008 waitlist brethren and helping these 2009 kids out. 😀

well said 😀😀😀 much :luck: to all!

Bump from Page 3...This is also a tradition for Republic of Texas threads. Keep it on the first page!

I'm going to ask again... anyone got the lowdown on the way things are shaping up in san antonio right now?

It's hot!! (99 yesterday). They officially posted their class list yesterday, but no clue on movement. You might ask in their class thread.

I haven't heard anything about movement. I don't think we've had any waitlisters show up in the class thread.

I'm on San Antonio's waitlist too. I called them a few weeks ago about my position, how they pick from the waitlist and if there has been any waitlist movement but they told me they couldn't divulge any of that information for some reason.👎 If I hear anything more I'll let you. Hopefully we'll hear some good news in the next couple of weeks.

Someone posted in another thread about how Tech's class had 150/140 spots filled, and had a ways to go before they start accepting from their waitlist.

I was wondering how they got that info, since it seems when I call they are reluctant to tell me any details. Maybe hes just a charmer...

Well, whatever the source, anybody have any updates?

Its almost June and not a single waitlist offer yet, somethings gotta give.

😕

Well, there's that 1-2 week period people are given after being given an offer from a school after May 15th until they have to turn it down again.

I have a question about TMDSAS and what some of you guys think about my situation. So I have 4 letters of rec, but I recently started to shadow a doctor in my hometown that I have known all my life. I asked him to write me a letter, but it wont be in till next week at the earilest. Should I wait till his letter gets in to send it to TMDSAS, or send in what I have now and just forget about his? Can I send in what I have now, then update TMDSAS with the new letter?

I would just have the doctor that you are shadowing send it in as soon as he is done with it. TMDSAS is nice about updates so it should not be a problem for them to add on that letter once it comes in. 🙂

I asked awhile ago on another thread, but does anyone have any idea about UTSW movement? and how does being waitlisted as an OOS applicant work? is there a separate list?

You'll submit early enough that it won't matter whether you're delayed by a week or two in the long run.

Quick question, do classes past Bio,Chem,Ochem, Calc/Stats, and physics go towards your BCPM. For example a bio major, will their remaining classes after intro bio effect the BCPM? Just wondering......

Yes, all BCPM classes count.

I would check the UTSW Class of 2012 thread under Allopathic Classes. 🙂

When I applied, I had the problem of too many docs having offered letters. I asked around a bit and discovered that most schools won't read past 3 letters. Some even told me point-blank not to send more, that it would reflect badly on my app.

Just my 2 federal credits.

i got around that by doing a committee packet with the ut health careers office through interolio. got 6 letters total, and put the in order of importance (cooley letter first, deans letter second, PI's letter third, etc). it doesn't necessarily reflect poorly on your app. they just usually won't read all of them. however, on the chance they DO read all of them, i figured it could only help.

and thinking back on my interviews, i was asked about my 5th and 6th letters a couple of times (at TCOM and UTH if my memory serves me). so i would just say that if you're going to stack the LOR's, make sure it's part of a nice little packet. 😀
