George Washington on probation

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This really raises a red flag for me.

I have an interview in november. I just found out I was accepted to SUNY Buffalo, so I might withdraw from GW.

What does the situation mean for students?

Why did they go on probation? I've heard rumors it was because of low board scores and overcrowded classes, does anyone have more info?

The email cited: "curriculum management, lounge and study space for students, and internal administrative processes."
When I interviewed, they told us that they were in the process of turning the entire first floor of the library into a lounge. I don't know about the other two. I wouldn't sweat it. The school is too well known and too large to lose its accreditation. Don't worry, by the time the probation is over, it will be fixed.

Great school. Beautiful campus. Would love to go there, today's email notwithstanding.

Although I did get very excited when I saw it in my inbox, today of all days.

wow - that sucks. It's funny that the article said something like" people aren't deterred from applying--this year had more applicants than last"..that's because this year, they only informed people of the probation AFTER they had applied!

This really sucks for current GWU students--and now I can't imagine why anyone would want to go to GWU (unless their only other choice was the caribbean or something). Not only did they fail their students, but in the very first interaction with prospective students, they lied point-blank 'probation is due to minor administrative issues'..I don't think it's just one bad egg (the president) I think the whole administration is tainted.

The whole rotting cadaver MRSA thing was kind of sketchy... Anatomy lab is bad enough without decomposition...

I thought the probation was going to be lifted this or next year.😕

I'm not surprised that people aren't deterred from applying. As long as there are far more med school applicants than there are med school seats, there will be plenty of students who would choose GW over going nowhere at all. Worst case scenario (from an admissions perspective): students with multiple acceptances will decline GW, and the adcom will have to go a little deeper into the wait-list.

👍 they won't have problems filling the class. Someone will take a seat, probation or no probation

I think it could have an effect on the quality of the student body (possibly). Personally, I was waitlisted and recently decided to withdraw. The probation issues definitely impacted my decision. Applicants with multiple acceptances who might have chosen GW because of something like location might go elsewhere. But you guys are right that, with 9,000+ applicants, filling the seats won't be that challenging. I'd be interested to see if apps decrease for the next cycle though.

I might also add that a huge amount of applications were sent to the school before they mentioned their probation status. so really, we should be looking at 2010's numbers, not 2009 to see the true effect of the probation on applications.

Probation or no probation, I'm still going to apply this cycle and if I get in, I would be really happy.

I doubt it wil affect them as people like me with only average stats will apply and gladly go there. I think it will have more implications on the waitlist. I know me personally I would refuse to go to GW as long as any other US med school accepted me. I would only go there if it was my absolute last option.

i don't think people outside of SDN know much about GWU being on probation guys. its in Washington DC though, and all east coast applicant will apply there

Not including California schools, for which you are in-state, I count 18 state schools on your list, for which you are out-of-state.

Why not add some more privates and delete all/most of your OOS?

can't help you without grades/MCAT/undergrad univ.

Though, I spent A LOT of time forming my list last cycle and I think it paid off. (9 interviews out of 25 apps with modest stats). The only state schools OOS I applied to were UMich and SUNY/Buffalo.

No interview at Michigan; accepted on Oct 15 from Buffalo.

BTW, I have no state school, sucks for me.

(oops, we have hijacked the GW probation thread. PM me if you want.)

Exactly. I would not have applied there had I known about the probation situation
