this is probably a stupid question but. . .

does MUSC have rolling admissions? because the people in the admissions office have previously told me that there is no advantage in applying early, as in waiting til the deadline in Dec to apply would not negatively affect my chances of getting in. but that doesnt seem right. can someone please clarify this?

my situation is that i am originally from SC, completed several years of university there (including all my prereqs), and my still parents live there. i need to reestablish my residency which takes 12 months and need to know by when i need to be starting my 12 months. if applying early has no advantage i can essentially wait until Dec (because by the following Dec I will have met the residency requirement) to be living in SC.

please help.

MUSC process: you interview, they meet on the last tuesday of every month, decide on the people they interview, send out notifications. you can be put on hold and notified after any monthly meeting that you get in.

just wait till december.
Ok this may sound silly but I just looked on my status page and saw Oct. 16 next to Comments. Does this mean that I have an interview on Oct 16?
probobly....they notify only 2-3 weeks before...you should get an email from joan if you are invited....i would def call monday though

that doesnt clarify anything. if anything, it makes me think i shouldnt wait til december.

if applicant x applies in august and interviews in october, he could get an acceptance before i even apply, right?

seems the later i apply the more the class is already filled thus the competitiveness of the remaining spots increases.

please correct me if i'm wrong. i'm not trying to be agumentative.i just want to understand how this works.

when do they start accepting people that have interviewd? do they wait until after everyone has interviewed?

ex. if you interview on oct 2, and your friend interviews oct 21, you both go before the same committie. you may be offered an acceptance on oct 30, and your friend may be put on the waitlist....then, at the end of november, your friend is reviewed by the committie again and offered an acceptance.

so answering your Q, it is in fact rolling. applying early is good, BUT if you are considered out of state you wont even get an interview till january/february.

i would apply now and when you submit the 2ndary, call and tell them you will be instate in dec.

my original post was about moving to SC to regain my residency before applying. and i was trying to figure out if i moved late and thus gained my residency late if it would affect my competitiveness. thus i am not applying this year - sorry, but i didnt see another MUSC specific thread. and i do plan on being a sc resident.

i've now discovered in the sc state codes as well as the petition or sc residency forms that one should be considered a sc resident if they are employeed full time in SC even if they have lived in SC less than 12 months. has anyone dealt with gaining SC residency to be considered instate for admissions? if that is true then as long as i gain full-time employment by the time i apply in august i should be fine, but that seems contrary to what the MUSC told. all they said was that i had to live in sc 12 months b4 i'd be considered for admission as a sc resident.

Has anyone been on the interview yet? I would LOVE to have a play by play of how the day goes as well as the INTERVIEW QUESTIONS!!!! Come on, spill the beans. 😀

You arrive early in the morning (8:30am?) and meet in a conference room in the Dean's Office. They have breakfast food there, take your picture for their file, and give you information on a bunch of stuff (courses, financial aid, etc). You then go on your interviews (three total) that last about 30 minutes each and then end up with a tour of campus. Then you eat lunch at a local restuarant nearby with the medical students. It's pretty laid back.

Also, interview questions are always random, so "spilling the beans" won't really directly help you with your individual interviewer. Anybody's guess is as good as yours.

As I understand it, confirmed by Joan and the residency admin, by law MUSC cannot consider an applicant in state until they have been in possession of a SC drivers license for 12 months. It's a legal matter bound by the conditions of being a partially state funded institution

Just wondering if they send out confirmation emails or mail. I mailed my app about a month ago. Just hope it got there

Status update online. It says what's in and what's not...also, it'll give your interview date o n the comments line before theyofficially tell ya.

that is not quite accurate. yes you'd have to be in SC 12 months. but with full time employment you can get sc residency before you have actually been in sc 12 months so long as you will have been in sc 12 months before classes start. without full time employment i'd have to have gaqined my sc residency status by the time applications are reviewed. if i want my app reviewed early to ensure i'm competitive, i'd want my sc residency by the time i apply, say Aug. that means i'd have o have been in sc 12 months prior to applying or 24 months prior to matriculation. however, with full time employment i can move to sc 12 months prior to applying, or at the same time i apply so long as i have full-time employment starting in sc the same time.

If you don't mind can you post the website to check my status online? I don't have that email. Must have misplaced in my unorganized inbox

how long usually does it take to find out if you have an interview or not?

how long usually does it take to find out if you have an interview or not?

Two days after my MCAT score came in, I called them to check on my application and she told me that she would get me an interview date as soon as possible. The next day I checked my status page and saw my interview date beside comments. So it was pretty fast!

anybody else get their interview invite for 10/23 yesterday?

Headed to Charleston tonight for tomorrow's interview. Anyone else going to be there?

To those of you asking about OOS stuff - I'm OOS with close ties and I interviewed last week. I know they say they wait until January or so but that's not the case, at least if you have close ties.

Chill interviews. Simulation center is really nice. Good lunch.

I have an interview today with a local doc and the two other on Friday at MUSC. I will let yall know how well they go!

When did they tell you about the local doc interview? Does everyone have that option?

if your instate and actively there (i.e. you live/go to school near greenville or columbia where alot of drs are) they usually give you the option of a local doc, but otherwise you get 3 in charleston.

Headed to chas tonight!

Question though:

I am IS and am currently in Columbia but have not been contacted about a physician interview, am I just going to have three tomorrow or are they going to have my third after tomorrow?

you'll have 3 tomorrow...which means you just wont have as much free time as everybody else....im in the same boat as you are..except my interview is next week

haha what i didn't want to hear, busy busy day tomorrow for me then - i'll be sure to let everyone know how it goes, best of luck to y'all!

They told me about it in my interview invite. The page was really cluttered though so I didn't even realize it til a few days later when I decided to read the entire email. If you're in Columbia then they should have set you up with a local doc.
Oh and for everyone else, I would tell how it went but I dont want to jinx myself before the big one tomorrow!

Hey,

For those who've had interviews, would you PLEASE fill out an interview feedback thingy? THANKS!!! 😀

interview THIS friday!! who all else is going to be there besides me and HealingbyFaith?

I think someone asked this a while back, but does anyone know if you can defer matriculation with MUSC? for one year....

Most schools will let you defer as long as you inform them in April with some sort of written notice, but I was having a hard time finding anything on the website.

Have any of you heard anything about deferring an admission at MUSC? Im considering doing a year long thing like Americorps or something and was curious if I got accepted if they would let me defer for a year.

Most med schools mention on their website but couldnt find it at MUSC

I'm sure it depends on the program, but according to Dr. Castles, MUSC will let you defer for things like Fulbright or other big projects. I'm not sure on any more information as far as when it is due in writing...so if anyone knows about that, that'd be great to know. I'll probably call and ask later this year.

i have to say, i had my interview yesterday and EVERYBODY i met or even passed on the streets or in the buildings was SOO NICE!. i really hope i get in here because its such a nice school and a very postive environment

I emailed the admissions dept and they said they consider deferrals on a case by case basis and will accept ones that would "enhance education/training experience" which sounds pretty broad to me.

I'll be applying this summer, anyone learn anything during application process that would have been nice to know beforehand?

Also, anyone have any idea about what percent of instate applicants go to school out of state for undergrad? b/c i remember hearing that most instate applicants interview with a local doctor, but seeing as I don't go to school instate the logistics of that would be tough.

you dont have to interview that way. i was like you and i just did 3 interviews on the same day rather than 1 early and 2 on the day.

They're actually pretty strict about what they will allow for deferral. If you have a plan laid out for what you're planning to do, and it's something that is relevant to your education, they're cool with that. But something like just traveling for a year or taking time off they're likely to deny. This came up somehow in a convo I had recently with the director of admissions (as far as where I got this info from).

Anybody know what the turn-around time is with interview invitations? I know I'm impatient, but, well...I'm impatient ;-)

They've had all of my application materials since 10/9. I know they have an adcom meeting tomorrow, so maybe they go through the new apps then?

I applied later in the cycle than I would have liked, so I'm just hoping I don't end up interviewing in January or whatever.

ahh so nerve racking...today the October interviewees should find out if we got in or not..PLEASE post when you know!!!

I went ahead and emaild Joan and found out I'm scheduled to interview January 8th. It will be a long few months waiting lol...I mean I should have expected that since my application was complete so late.

Definitely, those of you who find out about acceptances post on this thread 🙂

I am on 12/4. Are they interviewing throughout Dec or is there less dates due to holidays?

I would suspect there are fewer dates due to the holidays.
In spite of the rolling admissions, they definitely are still accepting people into February and even early March, so in the long run I don't think the late interview date will matter. I mostly just want to get it over with and find out for sure what I'll be doing next year.

Acceptance e-mail about 5 minutes ago..interviewed on 10/2, OOS with close ties. See MDapps if you need more info. Good luck everybody!

Just got my acceptance e-mail!
