Hey,

For those from California, how are you guys arranging your travel plans to PIT. The direct flight cost over 800 dollars, while 1-stop connect flights take over 12 Hrs.

Um...From where are you flying? I'm seeing round trips from $300 with flight times averaging 6-7 hours per trip from LAX to PIT and back on farecast.com. I'm flying into Dulles (originally from there) and out of PIT, but Dulles doesn't seem any cheaper.

about hosting, I emailed an MS2 from the spreadsheet but she told me they had an exam the day after my interview and she wouldn't be able to host me. After contacting the host coordinator I was just told to check back and hope the spreadsheet has been updated with MS1's. Has anyone been able to contact a student host yet for an interview on 9/24?

8/16: got an email from Pitt: Please apply. So I did.
8/17: got their secondary.
8/19: Submitted
8/20: Complete
8/23: Interview invite

UPitt is my new favorite school ever. Why can't they all be like this! 🙂

We had to hand in our info sheets today for first years that wanted to host interviewees. If they update it very quickly the spreadsheet should be ready before the beginning of next week. Don't worry too much about it, you will find a host soon. There will be a lot of eager first years willing to host students and share the love, even tho we are head first into anatomy right now.

astrife

according to eduers, this is data from 2009 (no idea about the credibility of this website)
Total admissions data 5616 applied, 1229 interviewed, 443 were accepted, 146 enrolled In-state admissions data 841 applied, 220 interviewed, 89 were accepted, 47 enrolled Out-state admissions data 4775 applied, 1009 interviewed, 354 were accepted, 99 enrolled

do you guys know whether pittsburgh has the usual 4-6 week turnaround time after submitting secondaries to let you know whether you will be interviewed or rejected? i was complete on 8/9 and still have not heard back, but i see people here who were complete after that and were offered interviews. just trying to prepare myself... 🙂

They said nov 15 is earliest acceptance, quick otherwise.

Just wanted to point out that you guys who are waiting on Pitt should log in to check if you have an interview.

Apparently I got an interview invite I'm-not-sure-how-long-ago without receiving an email. It's a pleasant surprise, but I also wish they notified us through email too.

Yeah I emailed a few and those who were already hosting people were pretty quick to respond and let me know that. Check your spam filter or next time you send an email politely ask that they let you know whether or not they're free so you can make other arrangements if necessary. good luck!

Anyone had their interview yet? Just wondering.

I'll be interviewing on the 12th of this month. It's my earliest scheduled interview, and I'm pretty excited. Will anyone else be there on that day?

They've been interviewing for a little while now. It's a very relaxed interview day, although you might want to be ready for the dean to ask everyone, in a group, why they applied to Pitt, to which I recommend having a slightly unique or personal answer.

I did, it was really great and laid back. Don't be nervous!

Yeah, I thought that was really weird. Everyone at my group was giving the same answer ("I love research; I love the patient-contact; I love the hands-on mentality; I love the city"), because what else are you going to say? I really don't understand why it was necessary to ask that in a group atmosphere, or at all. Of course everyone is going to suck up to the school....

Yeah I tried to say something slightly different about the location, but still, everyone played the same tune. (some gave an anecdote of their research and how/why it would continue at pitt)

Hey Flowrate, if you don't mind sharing, how long are the interviews? Is it open file or closed? Moreover, is there any difference between the faculty and student interviews?

If you can answer my questions, I will be sure to return the favor next time if I interview at a school prior to you.

Although I think your questions are answered in the interview materials and in the thread, interviews are ~45 min each, closed file student, PS and EC's faculty, equally weighted.

Thanks, sorry for making you repeat yourself, I haven't followed this thread extensively.

Hope you did great in your interview, best of luck

does anyone know what the optional sessions at the end of the interview day are? or a rough outline of the schedule? i'm wondering if i can get away with a 5pm flight out of pittsburgh. thanks, and gl to everyone 🙂

Applied 8/24
Secondary 8/25
Complete 9/6
Interview Invite 9/8

Stats: 3.2cGPA(long story), 3.8sGPA, 38O MCAT, URM, non-trad

Received an invite today 9/8.

EDIT: OOS, 3.74, 35

BTW, Pitt interviews a ton of people. The chance of getting accepted at this point has got to be like 10-15%. Not sure I'm liking these odds...

They interview approx. 1000 students, but with a class size around 150 I reckon they need to accept closer to 300.

According to this site, overall acceptance of interviewees was 44% (453/1031).

At my interview this year we were told that they are interviewing fewer applicants this year (about 850) and usually accept about 350 (including those removed from waitlist).

Alright then, well looks like it's around 40% either way. With any interview there is no guarantee of acceptance, but the chances certainly look pretty good. So excited for my interview next week!

Hello Everyone,

I'm looking at applying to PittMed in June of 2011. I am currently a junior and I was wondering what kind of undergraduate research backgrounds those of you who were interviewed or accepted had?

So far I have had a full time summer research internship and a semester of chemistry research (no publications). Do I need to do more research?

Thanks for replying 🙂

Do they send invites via email or do you have to log onto your account and check?

Also, did anyone get a payment confirmation email?

they send invites via e-mail. no payment confirmation email, but it should show up in your secondary app portal with a transaction #

does anyone have info about the interview day itinerary (afternoon scheduling-wise)?

imho: If research interests you, do more. If not, don't. There is no exact requirement that says you should put in x number of months and get y publications. What's more important is what you get out of the experience, as evidenced through letters of rec and your own voice (in essays, interviews, etc.) If you honestly tried your best in the lab but found that it's not your calling, say that. Don't continue doing something you dislike because you "need" to put it on your resume.

Finally complete here.

Here's to hoping that they like me, I did a TON of research with one manuscript currently being written (yeahhhh gotta get that submitted in the coming weeks)...

Invite! Complete 8/27.

2nd this question! If I can catch a 5:45 or 5:50pm flight, it'll save me several hours and about $100...

I haven't had my interview yet to know what's optional, but I reckon a flight scheduled to depart 10-15 minutes before the earliest time they recommend is not a bad idea--especially if it saves you that much money. If no one who has already interviewed gets back to you soon and you can wait until I get back from my interview this week I'll be sure to give you a rundown of the itinerary.

Thank you! I actually found a later flight around the same price point (I'll just drink a lot of coffee at work the next day), but I'm sure the info would be helpful for many people 🙂

hi, i just wanted to let people know that there are optional sessions at the end of the interview day at Pitt. after the two interviews, there's a financial aid session, a wrap up session and two optional session (on the clinical scientist training program and something else i forget). so if you find yourself really hard pressed for time, you could skip the optional sessions, and even the financial aid session and wrap-up. that's what i did and i was able to leave at 1:30pm (i interviewed a few weeks ago). the admissions office is really understanding. the bus ride to the airport takes about 50 minutes though.

I got an email for the supplemental application but for some reason cannot find the link to it. Can anyone provide it?? Thanks.

Interview Invtie today!!! Pitt is my top choice so I am ridiculously excited right now!

Completed around 8/18

Just had my interview at Pittsburgh earlier this week, and I had a great time! My student host was very nice and had many of the same interests as me, so I had lots of fun staying with him.

The interview process is quite casual, as many before me have already said. For all those who will be interviewing there in the future, don't stress out! They are very nice and friendly, and I didn't feel much pressure at all.

I'll reiterate what others have said about the interviews' being low-stress. I was freaking out the whole day (for no good reason) and only really calmed down when I was talking with the interviewers. They were both very conversational and seemed interested in me/my application. Overall a good day, despite my being irrationally spazzy.
