any one having trouble uploading pdf files on the status update tab?

I've been trying for quite a bit today and have not had any success. Hopefully it's just a glitch with the system, if it doesn't resolve itself some point in the next few days I plan to give admissions a call.

Any luck? I'm not sure how available admissions will be today because Columbia makes election day a holiday.

I understand columbia is nonrolling. However, If I was complete mid july, and I still have not received an invitation to interview, is it safe to assume that I probably won't be getting one?

Probably? Maybe. Possibly? Yes, especially if you continue to send updates.

I'm sure this has been aske before, so I'm sorry if this is redundant... But how responsive is Columbia to letters of intent post-interview, pre-decision? Does it make any difference in who they accept vs wait list? I know they're very responsive to them once you've placed on the wait list, but Columbia is my #1 choice and I would like to let them know before their ultimate review in February.

If it is your number one choice after finishing your interviews then you should tell them pre-decision AND post-decision, if needed. They take them into account in both areas.

Sorry if already answered but is Columbia P/F first two years?

Thanks

Pass fail unranked for the first 1.5 years. We only have a 1.5 year pre-clinical curriculum. Clinical years are unranked and uncurved ( meaning there are no limits on the number of people who have honors vs high pass, etc), but there are H/HP/P/F grades. They do send a graph that depicts the number of Honors, etc per rotation (i.e. XX% got honors in medicine, YY% got high pass, etc) so that residencies are capable of getting a picture of your performance relative to the average.

Completely unrelated question, how does the subway in NYC work? I've been to Tokyo and Seoul before, with their IC cards you flash over readers when you get on the trains, but...

Just buy a ticket for each subway ride?

LMFAO when I was reading this, because of your avatar, I pictured a bear coming to new york for the first time and trying to figure out how to get on the subway.

Hey guys. Today I received a letter from Dr. Nicholas that seemed like a likely letter. Has anyone else received something like that? Is it, in fact, a likely letter??
So excited!!!

I got one too. Do we reply to it? What's the proper reaction to something like this?

Could you share when you interviewed and the general message in the message? Was it email or snail mail?

email. i interviewed in late september. the letter basically ended saying something along the lines of: it's too early to know how things will go this year, but we will keep you strongly in mind and we would be happy to have you at columbia

Wow! Just out of the blue? That sounds really good to me!

I hear the Brooklyn Zoo is missing one after Hurricane Sandy

😀

Exactly!! I don't know! Is it premature to start feeling extremely excited?!

For what it's worth: don't get your hopes up until you have the acceptance packet in your hands. "We really like you" does not always mean "you should be here next year." I learned this the hard way after receiving a likely letter for undergrad at my #1, then saving money by withdrawing from all my other interviews, only to ultimately not get in. Things worked out in the end, but it was still a big splash of cold water.

Maybe not something to be too excited over... But very nice of Dean Nicholas to take his time out to write something so personalized for the applicants though.

That's pretty nice! I wonder if the "likely"-sounding letters at the other nonrolling schools are similar.

On another note, did anyone get an interview/head off to the Bassett program? I'm curious to hear people's opinions.

Did you send a thank you letter or update letter? It is common for Dr. Nicholas to send a reply. My recommendation is not the read too much into them.

All applicants receive a letter sometime after they interview, it's a very sweet tradition that shows how genuine and kind Dr. Nicholas is. He truly wants everybody to see how special P&S can be. No further action is necessary on the applicant's part, it's a gentle reminder of the drawn-out waiting process until March and to not lose hope with how long the wait time is. Don't consider this a "likely" letter, but rather a "yes we're reviewing your application very fairly" letter. I talked to friends from my alma mater who currently are P&S first and second year students who filled me in, and said these letters aren't sent in any particular order and come out between now and February, so if you don't get one today, you will get one in the next few months!

That said, I received a letter from him at 10:02 AM this morning, and interviewed late October. I don't plan to send a follow up letter unless I publish a couple more papers this year or something big that's worth updating the adcom

Cosign this. I got a letter as well, and let me tell you - I am the opposite of a "likely" candidate and had a terrible interview there (a great experience, just a bad interview). Columbia is a mega-long shot for me, to the point when I saw the "note from Dean Nicholas" email I thought, "welp there's the rejection."

short story: grain of salt.

Hi everyone - I just checked my status and had an interview invite. I did not get an email from admissions (I also checked my spam folder) notifying me so it may be worth checking if you haven't heard anything yet. Good luck!

I anxiously checked my status page only to be met with a disappointing lack of an invite. 🙁

Congrats though!

MD/PhD Applicant, only a few interview spots left, I haven't gotten one and I doubt I will.

Yea I feel the same way. I'm trying to accomplish something big before they run out of interview days so I can update and then maybe.

I haven't seen many II's given out yet. SHould I still have hope if I was complete 8-10?

Still haven't gotten one of these "We are continuing to consider you" emails a bunch of people seem to have gotten a week or so ago and I interviewed early October. Do they go out to everyone that interviewed? Should I be concerned that I haven't gotten one?

Haven't gotten one either and I interviewed with you. Hopefully that means that they haven't gotten to us yet.

i don't understand why they send out "we are continuing to consider you" emails if all decisions come out in march. wouldn't people naturally assume they are being considered until they get a decision?

I interviewed late September and haven't gotten one. I honestly don't think it matters. As someone mentioned, there's no particular order to them or purpose other than to be kind.

I haven't heard from P&S in months, so I logged into my secondary application. Under the status tab, I do not see anything that says "Application Complete." Yet I received an email (a long time ago) with the header "Secondary Application Complete," and the first line reads "We are pleased to inform you that your application to Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons is complete." (Quoted straight from the email.)

Now I am very worried, and am kicking myself for just assuming my application was complete. Does anybody else's application look like this?

I only see check marks under Application Status. So ... I'm assuming mine is the same as yours. If they sent you an email saying it is complete, then it's probably complete.

So your Status tab page doesn't say "Application Complete" anywhere? I'm having a small freak-out moment.

Mine doesn't either. I interviewed early October. Means nothing, guys. I still haven't gotten one of those we're still considering you emails like other here have. I freaked out for a bit, but I figure there's no reason. We're all guilty of the pre-med style neurotic reading too much into stuff thing.

I am guilty of that, so thanks to you all who checked your applications / reassured me I haven't been sitting on my butt with an incomplete application for months.
