I am new to the forum, but I also received an email about being placed on the alternate list yesterday! Can I take this as good news? Does anyone know what your chances are once you're on the wait list?

Well when you go to interview they tell you they take most of the waitlist, but it appears that last year only a little over half of the SDNers on the waitlist eventually got acceptances...it seems to me--and I'm just guessing from that info--that they expect to take somewhere between half and 2/3 of the list.

How do class rankings work at South? From what I understand, the first two years are P/F but I assume you still get scores. How often can you view your class ranking, after every test?

The first two years are Honors/Pass/Fail. Honors is top 10% or >/= 94 for that module. Your transcript will show H/P/F. You do receive a numerical grade for every module and this is used to calculate class rank. Official class ranks are released after every year. However, you can make an educated guess where you stand by comparing your score to the mean and standard deviation.

What is the difference between the TBL sessions and the PBL sessions? What exactly do you do in them? How are the groups chosen for TBL? How often are the groups changed?

Would anyone advise starting to look at apartments if you are on the alternate list?

You can look, but dont sign anything until you are admitted. Dont want to be obligated without being in school

We only had PBLs in cardiovascular, I still dont know what the hell that was, just dont worry about it.

TBLs are a big part of what we do. We were assigned tbl groups (apparently based on things like what type of degrees you've received and who the hell knows; l think they pulled our names out of a hat.) We usually have 2-3 TBLs/week. We are given a reading assignment beforehand (can be a 15 min read up to a 4 hour read). It starts off with a quiz you take on your own, then you take the same quiz with your group. We are then given questions that, as a group, we try to figure out (this part isn't graded, it's just for us to learn and think critically about the material).

You keep the tbl group for the whole year.

What are the pros and cons of the new curriculum? Do you feel that the TBL sessions are helpful?

So it's highly unlikely to see any alternate list movement until mid may?

Yes, Peggy told me there is "virtually no movement" on the alt list until May 15. USA threads from previous years back this up more or less.

For all of those on the waitlist I figured I would go ahead and make a list for ourselves.

South Alabama Alternate List:
1. RAV8998
2. futureUSACOMdr
3. bamart
4. paulasaurus
5. bamafan2013
6. AlaJ2012
7. alabamamed
8. IndefinitelyPre
9. bananastand10

I feel it would be nice for people to put if they were accepted to another medical school and plan on attending (It would give us a more true waitlist). Thank you and good luck to all of you.

You can add me to the waitlist. I'm also waitlisted on UAB's lower tier if you want to add that as well. Good luck to everyone. It's been a frustrating wait, but only a couple days till May 15th!

For those concerned I recently heard some information regarding the alternate list. I could be wrong, but from what I was told the waitlist movement we expected this week (May 15) could in fact actually start next week. Also, we should hopefully see a little over half the people accepted off the alternate list based off of the previous years (Not from SDN statistics). Once again good luck to everyone.

Where did you hear that? Reliable?

It is from a reliable source, but as with all things concerning the medical school process nothing is absolutely certain. You can see from earlier SDN forums that anywhere from half to two-thirds of the prospective students earn acceptance off of the alternative list. While it appears to me that some students will be accepted next week, there is obviously still a possibility that it will occur this week as the past SDN forums have shown.

+1 to the list for me too. At this point I don't even know anymore. So many ups and downs. Just wish I could find out all at once so I know where the heck I'm living in a few months >_<.

I declined a couple of days ago, so hopefully one of you will get that spot. Good luck.

I have not heard anything, but that makes sense with what I was told. Hopefully we will hear something Monday as oppose to later in the week. The waiting gets tougher every day.

Alternate list calls start today according to admissions

Thank you for posting that Kosmo13. Hopefully we will all hear something good soon. Good luck to everyone.

Has anybody heard of anyone getting in off of the waitlist yet?

I talked to Mark Scott yesterday and he said they're sitting at 74 acceptances rt now and are waiting for people to pull out. He said it might not happen til the end of this week or beginning of next.

So no one has heard anything? this seems extremely late fo zero waitlist movement...

I called friday and was told that they havent started yet.

Well hopefully it will start to move this week. I am curious though why it hasnt begun to move yet. It seems like in the past it has always started moving around the 15th.

Maybe the SOM thinks that some of its WL students are also on the UAB WL. UAB's WL has been moving (and maybe those new acceptees are withdrawing from USA?) Maybe USA wants to wait til the UAB enrollment is more settled. Otherwise, USA would be accepting students, who then decline when they get accepted off of UAB's WL.

Just a thought.

Anyone think they'll start tomorrow? the committee used to meet on thursdays right?

Im honestly not sure when the movement will start, but I think it is UAB who meets thursday nights. I thought the South Alabama College of Medicine's committee always met the same day as interviews. In addition, I feel that the waitlist order is already made and in that case I cant think of a reason for the committee to have to meet. I think the wait we are going through now is purely based upon a lack of students withdrawing who have already been accepted. I'm not sure if this is the case, but it seems like it would make sense. Keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for some good news soon though. Good luck to everyone.

Spoke to Mark Scott and he said that they plan on maybe starting next week and continue through the summer.

Does USA reveal where you're ranked on the alternate list?

I called South this morning and was told that Mark Scott would be out of town until the 24th, so I don't know that we should be expecting any more acceptances for a while.

Just got the acceptance call from Peggy this morning. Good luck to everybody still waiting.

Nice to know there's still a little movement. Congrats!

If anyone is thinking about requesting feedback from South I would recommend it. I talked to Mark Scott this morning and found what he had to say to be very helpful. He also confirmed that this year was very strange for the alternate list as far fewer people were taken than in years past.
