Thanks for sharing. I have the same MCAT.

Really looking forward to the interview. Does anyone know how many have been accepted so far? How many do they accept in total?

The acceptances at UAB and USA have been somewhat a dance. Anyone else feel that way?

I believe they offer ~120 acceptances to fill ~75 spots. I could be wrong but I think that is an ok ballpark. I think they talked about that on forums for previous years.

I would be surprised if you weren't at least offerred an interview. Are you in-state?

I will likely start gathering information this week. I will start filling out my taxes shortly and I believe we need that information.

I emailed Peggy Terrel in admissions in December and she said it was a little too early for Financial Aid / Scholarships. She gave me a contact in Financial Aid - if you'd like I can PM that information to you.

Could you also PM the contact to me as well? Thanks in advance!

Thanks! 120 acceptances.... I wonder how many they interview?

I know it only gets about 1300 apps of which about 27% are instate. 90% of the matriculants are instate.

I want to say they interview ~200-220. I'm pretty sure Mark Scott gave an indication of how many they interviewed during my interview orientation and I believe that is also at least close.

Can anyone else confirm?

Just checked my 2011-2012 MSAR and USA interviewed 193 for the 2009-2010 matriculants. So, probably the 200-220 range is reasonable.

Yea 200- 220 interviews sounds about right. And they said they would accept around 120-125 for a class of 75. They also said that if you're waitlisted here then you should basically take that as an acceptance. This is because they make their wait list short on purpose so that they don't have a large number of people waitlisted for no reason (and we all know how much being waitlisted sucks as far as making future plans goes).

So, about half of those interviewed get accepted? I'm guessing that the odds are better if you're instate?

Accepted

In-state
MCAT 29
GPA 3.47

Good luck to everyone else

I got a hold card. Do they have any more acceptances from hold cards, or just rejections and wait listings? At what point are the final rejections? Thanks

They definitely still have acceptances to give out. They will send them out once the score to get in is lowered. They send you a hold card because at that point in time your score was not at or above the threshold to get in.

Do they lower the score threshold after more interviews?

Did you get the hold card after you interviewed? If so, when did you interview?

They lower over the progression of the process during the admissions boards meetings. It could be after an interview or not, it just depends when they decide to lower the threshold.

What is the difference in being wait listed and having hold card?
A hold card means you could still be rejected or accepted. Wait listed means you are on a list to be accepted. From what I gather, most wait listers are accepted. Wait listed is a step ahead of a hold card and a step behind acceptance.

I interviewed and got the hold card. You find out in about a week if you get accepted or held.

As stated earlier, hold cards are sent to those if the combined score isn't above the threshold. If the threshold is lowered (at no set time) and your score meets the criteria you get accepted. Threshold is lowered at USA's discretion and can occur any time (your guess is as good as mine). Interview season goes til end of March/early April, at that point, they generate a waitlist. It's a lightweight waitlist with those on it having a good chance of being accepted - everyone else gets rejected. They can accept anyone off that list til the first day of classes in Fall.

If I may ask, what were your stats and when did you interview?

I'm interviewing next week. I'm guessing that means that I'm interviewing right before they lower the bar again. I don't know if that's good or bad.

I hear such good things about the SOM that I'm really looking forward to the interview.

Hope I have good :luck:

Could those who've been accepted or given a "hold card" please tell us:

s&c GPA
MCAT
instate or OOS
gender
URM or not

It might help make things more clear.

I interviewed October 24th and got a hold card the week after, but then received an acceptance on November 20th. My stats are 29Q and a 3.7 sGPA and 3.78 cGPA.

Anyone else get accepted or wait listed after getting hold card after interview? Stats?

interviewed dec 19th with 32 mcat and 3.9 gpa - USA undergrad
hold card 5 days later. ....nothing yet.

For the record, nobody will be waitlisted until the wait list is made, which isn't until they have finished all interviews and filled the class. That means that for now the only options are accepted, a hold card, or rejected. From what i understand the bar should either have just been lowered or will be lowered within the next few weeks. After that, it won't be lowered again until they have completed all interviews, and at that time it will basically be lowered only to fill the remaining spots. This is when the waitlist is made. And just as i said before, the waitlist as South is purposefully made to be really short, meaning that most of the people who are waitlisted here will be accepted before school starts. Hope this clears a few things up.

Are you OOS? I know that you're a USA undergrad, but wondering if you're OOS. Seems strange that they would delay acceptance with your stats. Is your MCAT highly unbalanced?

Please, anyone, reply if you have been wait listed or accepted from a hold card. Stats?

As people have already mentioned there is no waitlist atm. The waitlist will not be released until after all interviews are completed.

To SOMBOUND

first of all, don't assume anything that you will get a hold cause I did, you have a good mcat, b.

interviews went great. At least I didn't feel I did worse than other schools where I did have success 🙂
10-9-13 is my balance - Escambia resident from Florida and just so the service county applicants know, it is not like being a CA resident for this school - they basically put us in the same category as AL residents. I asked them.

One issue I do have with this school - I imagine they don't have a very diverse class and I really wonder if it is a tight-knit collaborative atmosphere because it wasnt that in undergrad. Everyone is on campus as little as possible. Nothing wrong with that necessarily.

Thanks for the info.

I wouldn't judge the SOM by the undergrad. An undergrad that is more of a suitcase/commuter school would be very different from the SOM.

Anyone accepted after hold card? Stats? Just trying to see when things start moving again. Thanks

Hold card, haven't heard anything yet
30 MCAT
>3.5 sGPA,cGPA
Hopefully there will be some movement relatively soon. Staying optimistic

I see that you're instate and interviewed in Nov. I'm surprised by the hold card. don't despair yet. Someone else got a hold card and then an acceptance a very short time later.

What is the breakdown of your MCAT?

With a 3.5 sGPA, were your lower grades in Ochem or what?

I see acceptees with similar stats getting accepted, so the difference must be in the details - lowish section on MCAT, lowish grades in pre-reqs, etc.

I'm just trying to see if there's a method to the madness. 😀

yea I understand, I too am trying to get an understanding.

But no, my scores were very balanced.. Pre-reqs were good. My lower grades came freshman year as a nonscience major. I had a great interview experience, so I am holding out hope.

Good luck to everyone else waiting!

I wonder if South waits to see if the instate applicants get into UAB first and then withdraw their South apps? Anyone know?

Based on information from the thread last year it looks like there were 18 people waitlisted from SDN. Nine of those 18 were eventually accepted at USA.

I'm an IS re-applicant (29 MCAT, 3.56 cGPA) and have already updated them with my master's GPA (4.0). I've heard that re-applicants are interviewed later in the application year....can anyone confirm?

Yay....Acceptance came in the mail yesterday! Excited!!

:soexcited:
