2013-2014 Universidad Central del Caribe School of Medicine

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Submitted my application 6/21! I applied for 2012, interviewed and was accepted, but then turned it down to stay with family in California to have my first child. Since then I read the school has changed interview format, and I wonder if they request secondary essays now. This is a wonderful program; check out their website for info on community involvement and research!

I got an email from admissions today confirming they received my application 🙂

So, their website states:

"A letter of recommendation is required from the Pre-medical Committee of the applicant’s undergraduate institution, where there is such committee. Otherwise, the applicant must submit two letters of recommendation from his/her science professors."

And there's a link to this form http://www.uccaribe.edu/admission/wp-content/RE_MD.pdf

I will probably email them about this, but does anyone know whether we are required to have our pre-health committee send this form AND a committee letter? Or just a committee letter? Or just the form?

Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

I only submitted two LORS.

If your college has a committee, then the committee letter is the only one required.

Ok, that makes sense. But, does the committee letter/LOR need to have this form attached?: http://www.uccaribe.edu/admission/wp-content/RE_MD.pdf

Or can my letter writer just send in their letter alone? It's not clear to me whether you send the letter OR the form (or BOTH???)

To my understanding, you must use the form either way.

My letter writers just filled out the form, sent it, and that was it. They didn't write any separate letters.

I will call tomorrow and ask anyway.

My LOR authors (2 science professors since I never "bonded" with my school's pre-med committee) filled out the form and attached a copy of their letter as well. I also submitted two more letters, one from current and long standing employer--MD--and another from again long time volunteering at clinic for indigent. This cycle the school accepts letters via amcas; it did not last cycle I applied.

Hmmmm. Really? I didn't see that stated anywhere on their website (maybe I missed it???)

So, if letters are sent through AMCAS, would that mean the form needs to be mailed in separately? I emailed them about this, but haven't heard anything yet. If anyone finds out anything else please let me know. I don't know why I am finding this so confusing 😕

Check amcas website for schools that accept letters via application service. If you apply to more than that school you'll need to submit your letters to amcas. UCC's form can be submitted separately or ask your LOR author to attach a copy of their letter as well. Call the school if you need primary source confirmation. Exito!

1. I have the same question that many others here seem to be having. My letter of rec writers already sent their letters in through AMCAS, but I am unsure if I need to bother them again and have them fill out the form provided on the website.

2. Do any other documents already sent through AMCAS need to be sent in separately to UCC? Like transcripts and MCAT scores?

3. Is the money order of $100 supposed to be mailed directly to the admissions office?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Any current student and or alumni or other can provide rotation site info and residency match lists?

Well tomorrow im gonna send in my transcripts and gonna gather some money for that $100 money order.

Got the e-mail requesting missing documents! Mailing money order and photo (optional) today. How's everyone's cycle going so far? I finished all my secondaries with this one. Exito! :zip:

Applying from the mainland, bilingual.

I submitted my app in 7/3 but AMCAS is taking forever to verify the applications! Has anyone been to the campus? Anyone talked to current/former students? Any info on residency matching? I wish they would post that information on their website like many other med schools do! Good luck everyone! :luck::luck:

May want to peruse last cycle's thread or even the one prior to that. I applied and interviewed for 2012 entry and the campus is small with hospital right next door. Facilities looked old from outside but alright inside. I really got along well with other applicants interviewing and liked professors and staff for interview and tour. Student body rather small (class size of about 60) and most graduates have to place into mainland residency programs. Classes are taught in Spanish but all materials and exams in English. I had never been to PR and loved the beautiful island, got to visit couple of days after interview. Let me know if you find info on match list!

I'm just waiting. I don't owe this medical school anything else, other than my patience.

I am applying to UCC...

Hi everyone,

I apologize in advance if this is a stupid question but is UCC welcoming of applications from non-Hispanic applicants with Spanish fluency? I'm a New York applicant with a non-traditional background. I really would like to be able to do clinicals etc in Spanish. This year I will be living and volunteering at an orphanage in Guatemala. If they aren't open to it then I'd rather not spend money on the primary and secondary apps. I'm also inquiring in the school-specific threads of the other two private schools on the island. From what I understand, the public school is not open to applicants without strong ties.

My stats are 3.35c/3.7bcpm/3.74postbac/30S MCAT(9P,12V,9B).

Thanks so much.

Hi there,
I had applied for 2012 matriculation and got in as a non Hispanic applicant with no ties at all to the island but fluent in Spanish with experience in medical field treating Spanish only speakers and gone to Nicaragua on clinical exchange. Hope this info helps. I applied again this cycle so not current student there.

How was the interview? I want to assume you live on/are from/have ties to island for applying there; correct?

Yes, I live in PR. The interview was pretty short. No tour, no financial aid orientation, nothing. It was completely closed file, and the big questions were: Why medicine? What makes you stand out? What do you do in your spare time? And describe any research.

It was laid back though, and it was a group interview, even though it was only two of us being interviewed. They said the admissions committee meets at the end of this month, and early october they are gonna start handing out acceptances.

When I called UCC, the woman told me the interview format they have is MMI. Not sure how I feel about it.

I did not apply there. Did you like staff and campus? Where do you live? What's your first choice?

Oui, si l'anonimite existe toujours! ;-)
What, if any, specialty do you practice in? What other programs did you apply to? I have an interview at ATSU soma in November. Exito! As they say on the beautiful island.

I did not apply to other programs. I only apply to SJB and UCC... I would love to apply to SOMA since I am extremely interested in primary care (family medicine) but I did not apply due to my low (22) mcat score... Keep me updated on SOMA because I might retake the mcat if I don't get in this cycle and apply to SOMA next cycle...
