Applied. Not sure whether I want to fill out the secondary... 20 spots is nothing for OOS.

Lol should've done my research before applying to this school(NJ Resident)...yup no secondary for you Marshall :/

I posted this in the 2013-2014 thread, but I thought I'd post here too. I'll be applying here, although I don't know if I have a realistic chance of actually getting in.

Out of State Applicant, not URM, not ESL
Stats: 3.9 GPA 26 MCAT (10/6/10) 🙁
ECs: 300+ hours of clinical experience, 80 hours hospital volunteering, 100 hours nonmedical related volunteering, 700 hours of research experience, served as a mentor for high school students, tutored math for entering freshmen, etc.
I've been told by multiple people my personal statement is very good and demonstrates my dedication to the field of medicine.
But that 6 though....

What do you guys think? Any advice will be appreciated!

I think you should call the admissions office. The secondary says to call if you want counseling on how competitive your app is and the woman I spoke with was great! She can tell you if you're not competitive, on the cusp, or competitive.

Definitely call them. They are really helpful. You really don't want to apply and turn in secondary ($100 if you're OOS) if they don't think you're competitive. But only they can tell you if it's a good idea to apply or not. Good luck!

lol I learned this my first time applying (I was very uninformed and didn't realize how competitive CA schools are lol) but that's why the MSAR is a must!

Secondary essays are:

Why did you decide to apply to the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine? If you have strong ties to West Virginia, please describe in detail.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Where do you want to serve or practice medicine?

If you are not presently attending school, indicate your employment or other plans for the time prior to your planned enrollment in medical school.

Do they consider applicant with strong ties to a neighboring state? I have lived in, gone to school in, and worked in OH for the past four years, but I am considered an IL resident.

I'd call them. You already have decreased chances just by being from a neighboring state. But it doesn't hurt to call them and see if you have a shot.

In-State interviewing on Oct. 21! Looking forward to it even though I live in enemy territory (Morgantown). Any advice from anyone?

I personally don't think that's going to get you very far, but if you are interested in rural medicine, it MIGHT.

Interview scheduled for 11/25/14. OOS applicant (Gallia County,OH) which is in Marshall's "Metro" area

Any updates from anyone who has interviewed?
I haven't heard back from them, but got a very good vibe during my interview. They have been very rigid with me proving my WV residency. I am trying to get a signed copy of my lease to give to them but my apartment complex admin won't get back to me. So frustrating! It is sort of my fault for not keeping a copy, though. 🙁 Ahh!

Interview scheduled 12/20.
OOS with very strong ties, non-trad, cGPA 3.67, sGPA 3.88, 40, good extra curriculars/volunteering, some research
Are there any OOS spots left?

Not sure, but unless you really want to go to Marshall, you should know you have a strong chance at A LOT of other med schools (basically any you want) as long as your apps are in!

Thanks!
I know, but I'm hoping to get into at least one of my home state schools so I have the option to be close to home and near most of my support network.
Reading that there are only 20 spots worries me.

20 spots, but those are reserved for exceptional students and it sounds like you are one of them! Best of luck!

Marshall isn't exactly a school that focuses on your application numbers. They care about your personality, what type of person you are, and if you possibly fit their mission statement. You have the stats to get accepted if they only go by numbers, but my suggestion is to rock the interview. I feel that is the most important aspect for Marshall and the admission committee.

Thanks for the advice!
I want to do rural family medicine and felt like the interview went well after every one I've had so far, but I keep getting disappointed. :-/

Best of luck my friend! You have amazing stats and I have a feeling you will possibly be asked to interview.

My experience with my interview:

My interview wasn't until 8am and I showed up in the parking lot of the school/hospital at 5am. I was so nervous and continued to review notes and reread over all my research material I did in undergrad since I graduated 3 years ago and forgot some of the specifics. I was very nervous.

HOWEVER, do not fret or be nervous over this interview. Cindy Warren is the first person you will meet and she is very kind and welcoming. She treats the students like they are her own kids and makes jokes throughout the day and keeps reminding us to just be ourselves and not to worry about anything. She has been at the medical school since it first opened in the 70's. I was interviewed by a pharmacist and a band director who are both on the admission committee and both reassured me to relax and just be myself and have fun. The questions they asked pertained to "tell me about yourself", "what are your hobbies", "how do you deal with stress", etc. They will ask maybe one or two questions about your application but they make the interview more focused on finding out who you are as a person and if you would be a good fit at Marshall. The two who interview you are the one's who try to support your application to the admissions committee. They are not there to make you fret and answer hard questions that will mess up your chances. They are the one's who help you!

Like I said before, I was completely freaking out before my interview since it was my first one ever and I really wanted to be accepted to Marshall. I thought for sure that they were going to drill me with hard questions. But I left the experience laughing at myself at how nervous I was, because the interview and experience is amazing and was a breeze. All the students interviewing had fun and they even gave us a little gift to take home.

Cliff Notes Version: -Be Yourself!!!!! I can't express this enough!
- Don't worry about what questions they are going to ask. The one's interviewing you are the one's who support your application to the ad com.

Completely agree. My numbers aren't the best, but I definitely rocked the interview and absolutely loved the people there.

Wanting to know if any in state students have heard back from Marshall and about how long you waited after your interview? I was interviewed December 13 but have not been contacted. Should I be worried?

My numbers were fair and I felt like I did really well at the interview also! Did you get any good news yet? Good luck!

Accepted! OOS
When I interviewed last week, I was told they would not make a decision on any out of state applicants until they had interviewed all of the approximately 80 OOS people they're considering.
How were you accepted so early?

I already got into my top choice so I will be withdrawing here! Good luck everyone!

Cindy contacted me today to let me know that they made a "no decision" on my application. I'm hoping that maybe I will have a chance when they review me a second time later.

I was told that they occasionally make exceptions. I wasn't expecting to hear back till February, so the phone call was a pleasant surprise

Kayaker said she's metro area. Sometimes they'll let them know as ISS timeline.

If anyone has any questions, let me know. I'm a MS-1.

I'll see you either tomorrow or on Feb 7 if you're interviewing then!

I wanted to drop by and say they are still sending out OOS interviews. I decided to turn it down due to an acceptance elsewhere, but there is still hope for those waiting to hear from them!

To those who have interviewed already, how was it? Was the interview one on one and open file? I'm OOS from NJ and interviewing there this upcoming Saturday! Any advice or suggestions would be most appreciated 🙂

I reallt hoped to interview here when I applied, since I really enjoy the location & WV, being from Maryland & all, but I guess it's not happening. Nicest admissions office I've had the pleasure to interact with though.

Just called JCESOM Admissions today and was told they are running behind on their committee meetings due to a 3 day closure last week. They said the week of March 23rd is when they will likely have a decision made for all OOS.

Thanks for the update. Here goes another two weeks of waiting.

Best of luck, fellow OOS people. Absolutely loved everything about this place. The faculty, students, administration--all high caliber. Everyone seemed genuinely passionate and fulfilled in their pursuits. It would be a dream come true to be accepted here.

Has anyone heard if they met last night, and if so, when they will let us know something? It seems like they notified people on Thursday evenings in the past based on the older forums.
