October interviewee here holding onto the dream that I may hear something before March, lol
That would be a big fat nope.Anyone get word or hear word from anyone that interviewed in October?
I never expected to hear in October...I think they may be changing the rolling admission process somewhat this year so don't lose hope haha
Thank you 🙂 good luck to everyone...UNMs process is very mysterious. Stay positive! Not even ashamed to say I was irrationally excited when you said you heard back in Oct.. That's the neurotic premed in me! Haha congrats on your acceptance btw!!
That's the most accurate word to describe it!! When others ask me if I've heard any news, I simply tell them I've been placed in purgatory hahahaThank you 🙂 good luck to everyone...UNMs process is very mysterious. Stay positive!
Does anyone now know the number of regular decision applicants applying this year?
That's a good point. Not sure if people are holding off because of that, or how many are holding off. But the new test is a completely different kind of beast. I'm curious on how many people are applying this year because I've heard it can vary quite a bit between 200 and 300.+1 I'm also very curious. I'm actually curious if there's less this cycle because of people holding off on the new MCAT
We were told in early December that there were 1,500 applicants and 280 are interviewed. Also, less than 50 spots were available then.Does anyone now know the number of regular decision applicants applying this year?
How many IS applicants? If 280 are interviewed, the total number of IS applicants is most likely close to that total. We were told in early December that there were 1,500 applicants and 280 are interviewed. Also, less than 50 spots were available then.
They didn't say, but yes, it's probably close to that, since 96-98% of IS applicants are interviewed. How many IS applicants? If 280 are interviewed, the total number of IS applicants is most likely close to that total.
Rolling accepted today!!!!
Lizzy M ~69, interviewed 10/27
IS or OOS?
IS, born and raised (and UNM was my undergrad). Also not URM.
I interviewed in the middle of October and I have not. Seems like we would have known by now if we were going to get rolling accepted/rejected. Looks like about 2 more months in purgatory. That's awesome!!! Congrats!! I'm still in hopes for a word before March. Anyone from the October 15th date get any word?
Congrats!! 😀Rolling accepted today!!!!

I honestly feel that using your LizzyM score to determine competitiveness at UNM is only useful to a certain extent. Realize that UNM's formula more or less considers 70 and up equally, and that LizzyM does not quantify the experiences of an applicant. I'd say anywhere at or above the mid 60's will have you set in that regard, and your interview and other aspects of your application will do the rest of the talking from that point forward.Congrats!! 😀
redferrari, purgatory is the perfect word to describe it. I interviewed today and although I thought it went well I already feel like I'm in purgatory. As of this morning before I interviewed, we were told there are 42 spots remaining. One of my interviewers was a doctor who said it took her multiple attempts to get in and to never get up!
Does anyone know around what Lizzy M is a safe bet to get in this year?
I'll second that LizzyM probably isn't all that important for this school. I posted mine because I know people like to have it for reference. I believe the lizzyM score is supposed to really determine your competitiveness for an interview (not necessarily acceptance) at a school, and we all know that with UNM that already doesn't matter a ton as state residency is the main factor in getting an interview.
The big plus is that UNM takes an incredibly holistic view (my impression anyway) of your application and you can compensate for a lot by really demonstrating a love for medicine!
I really hope to see all of you in July!
There's only 9 people in the class of 2020 Facebook group so certainly many many spots remain. Nobody should be losing hope by any means!
Even though there's only 42 spots left, I'd guess around 60-70 will end up getting accepted. Keep in mind that some applicants that aren't EDP get accepted to multiple schools, and for obvious reasons, can only attend one! Also, as harsh as it sounds, IS EDP applicants who didn't get in are a contingent you might as well subtract from the 278 total. Also, that 278 includes most if not all of the 58 spots already filled. May the odds be ever in your favor! At the end of the day, it's probably closer to 65/200 and not 42/278. I know this does little to ease anyone, but just because the odds may seem daunting, nobody should give up hope! But with 42 spots left out of approx. 278 in state applicants this year, I feel like it's still a far stretch for a lot of us. 🙁 I know it's a lot likelier than other med schools with thousands and thousands of applicants, but it still seems tricky. Staying optimistic though! I guess it's all a part of the process. At least there's the wait list also, which is how quite a few people end up getting in.
Thanks for sharing, that's definitely encouraging! I didn't realize that out of the 278 I was quoted on my interview day, that those included the 58 spots already filled. I thought those were an additional/separate 58. So from my understanding, that means actually competing with around 220 (or maybe even a little less?) others instead of 278. A 30-ish% chance is certainly better than a 15% chance, or a 1% chance like at many of the other schools out there! Does anyone know if the wait list ever takes around/more than 25 people? Or is it usually 20 max? I really hope at worst I can get in off the wait list.Even though there's only 42 spots left, I'd guess around 60-70 will end up getting accepted. I could be wrong (and someone please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong), but from my understanding, it's usually less than 10 people, maybe 1-3, since they claim that usually 98% or over 98% of accepted applicants are in state.Does anyone know the statistics on OOS? I know it is very few but does that mean 1 or 2 or maybe 10?
From anecdotal evidence, I've heard it's usually around 20, but it can vary a tad bit. Thanks for sharing, that's definitely encouraging! So you're positive the 278 includes all or most of the 58 spots already taken, right? 🙂From anecdotal evidence, I've heard it's usually around 20, but it can vary a tad bit.
I'm not 100% positive, but previous years have had roughly 280-300. I find it hard to think applications would spike to over 330 this year, especially with the new MCAT being implemented. Can you remember exactly how they phrased it when they said there were 278 applicants? So you're positive the 278 includes all or most of the 58 spots already taken, right? 🙂
A fellow interviewee asked, and Cindy said "around 278 this year." And then Dr. Sapien chimed in that this is a record year in terms of number of applicants, and that usually they have 30-40 less in-state applicants than this cycle. So I was kind of confused. Who really knows? I think we've established that UNM is one of the most mysterious places out there... Dr. Sapien probably chimed in as part of an effort to maintain the aura of mystery hahahaA fellow interviewee asked, and Cindy said "around 278 this year." I'm glad I'm not the only one obsessively checking my email. My paranoia sure feels like a disease! When I try to explain to people not familiar with this process about how long it takes to find out (after they ask me nosy questions), I just get strange looks. As if I enjoy waiting an eternity.I interviewed September 9th, and have been checking my email every few hours since then!
Thanks for posting how many seats were still left, I was wondering about that myself.
Compared to last years thread it seems like there have been less rolling acceptances this cycle.
One more week closer to March 🙂
I was under the impression the committee reviews applicants one interview group at a time and then they would send out rolling admissions/rejections to the ones with scores (either higher or lower) outside of the range to be considered. Then they would be reviewed once more in March for final decisions.Indeed! The mystery continues. Anyone with any updates on individuals that have heard anymore rolling decisions? As interviews continue, are candidate continually reviewed for rolling denials? Or are the groups of interviewees reviewed once by date and again in March only?
This was my understanding too. Not 100% positive though. I was also told on my interview day that if waitlisted, people will find out their waitlist number right away but I don't think that's true, unless things have changed. Because in previous years people found out their waitlist numbers 2 weeks to a month in the mail, after first finding out they were waitlisted in March by e-mail. Quite a process. And then at that point, in that letter, some people are also notified of PrEP Program eligibility. In the mean time I would like to think that no news is best (because it's not rolling rejection news).I was under the impression the committee reviews applicants one interview group at a time and then they would send out rolling admissions/rejections to the ones with scores (either higher or lower) outside of the range to be considered. Could be completely wrong, just what I have gathered from stocking UNMs sdn thread for the past two years and talking to them at my interview date.
Nothing but crickets and static. I personally believe it's insane that some people end up waiting 6-7 months, but hey, my opinion doesn't matter to the ADCOM hahahaIndeed! The mystery continues. Anyone with any updates on individuals that have heard anymore rolling decisions? As interviews continue, are candidate continually reviewed for rolling denials? "Everyone in purgatory" ....so true haha. The wait is driving me insane! So does anyone know - if we are to be rolling rejected/accepted, what's the maximum time after the interview date that we're supposed to hear that before assuming that we won't hear back until March? 2 weeks, 3 weeks?Nothing but crickets and static. From my understanding, they score you soon after your interview and there's an upper and lower that result in auto accept or auto reject. Everyone in purgatory is then put into a final pool at the end, from which a final ranking is derived. From there, all ties that impact accept/waitlist/reject are broken.
While this is inconvenient to applicants who just want to make a choice on where to spend the next four years and have some finality in life, I guess it's a good way to make sure everyone is evaluated against everyone else (although the criteria for evaluation is mysterious in and of itself hahaha).
May the odds be ever in our favor...

Ok, thanks for sharing! I guess ultimately it's all just very mysterious and semi-unknown. March really can't come soon enough...They made it sound on my interview date like we would be evaluated about a month following our interview and potentially get a rolling decision then. However, to add to the mystery (lol), I interviewed at the end of October, was told we would hear either at the end of November or in March, and got a rolling decision in early January.
And to answer the earlier question about whether there have been more rolling decisions- there hasn't been anyone added to the Facebook group in the last couple weeks for whatever that is worth.
Again, good luck everyone! There's certainly no reason to worry until March (and even then, the waitlist movement is strong) but I know the waiting game is brutal.
Definitely. My heart is set on this school, I just love everything about it.To UNMs credit, as much as the waiting is MISERABLE, the way they do their admissions makes it so you aren't totally SOL if you applied a little later in the cycle, unlike a lot of schools where you don't have a prayer unless you submitted your AMCAS in early June.

I really hope I get the opportunity to do the same 🙂I look forward to calling you all classmates!
