Congrats on the acceptance today!

Definitely come to Penn's second look. Hopefully that will be more than enough for convincing. Idk much about UW, but you really can't go wrong with Penn. It's a large program with a good support network. There's plenty of opportunities -- coming from a state school undergrad with somewhat limited resources, it was actually a little comforting when my PI said that if we run into a sort of roadblock on a project I want to do, we can start making phone calls and set up meetings with other PIs that do have particular resources our lab may not have. It's a large enough place to do that (not to mention one of Penn's philosophies at the university level is incorporated in the "One University Policy").

There may not be a person that does specifically x, y, and z that you want to do, but there's plenty of PIs who aren't far off from those things, and that's what's important. It is even more helpful imo when you're not exactly sure what you want to do coming into the program (which most of us don't know, like me). Although you may know you're interested in cancer bio or gene expression or computation or T-cells or whatever, when you start to really figure out what your specific interests are in those domains and how you want to tie it together clinically (that's the dream), you're not faced at a roadblock. There's always someone with the foundational expertise to help you. So the key is to find a good PhD mentor here and then branch out from there.

Now if another school has a PI that does specifically x, y, and z, you're dead-set on doing those things, and s/he is a good mentor, then that school might be best for you. But if you're not exactly sure what you want to do or if you decide to switch grad groups (a good proportion my year switched grad groups already, and I totally switched research fields), Penn is a great place to be!

Hello everyone! I need some advice about revisit. My top two acceptances are on the same days, and I am torn as to how to proceed. I am leaning heavily towards Penn, but the other program is fabulous as well and I already committed to attending its revisit. Should I zip around and try to visit both? Visit just Penn because it's my top choice? Visit the other school because I'm not sure about it?

(I will eventually put in my II, acceptances, and rejections for future years, I'm just cautious and want to wait until the cycle is fully over)

This is most easy to answer, and should have been asked in the General Questions thread...
Talk to Skip and/or Maggie. They both know where you have been accepted (AMCAS acceptance reports), and also know when the visits for each of the programs occurs (MD/PhD Google calendar). You are in the driving seat, now. They are catering to your requests.

Additional info: was waitlisted at UAB but withdrew from further consideration when I accepted Cincinnati. Also waitlisted at Houston and I'm assuming OHSU since I haven't heard a peep from them since interviewing.

Medical programs should enter a matriculation action for students in AMCAS immediately upon the start of enrollment or the orientation immediately preceding enrollment.

Thanks for all of the help Fencer! How exactly is matriculation defined? Is that just accepting an offer by that particular school's deadline? If so, how do students who are accepted to schools that have response deadlines manage to entertain waitlist offers following those deadlines? Thanks!

"You have "matriculated" as a medical school student if you were officially enrolled and attended classes as a candidate for a medical school degree."

Matriculation intends to reflect that the student is on campus, and started orientation and attending classes and/or a laboratory rotation for MD/PhD students. After May 15, there must be direct personal communication between the admission officers of the two schools as long as the applicant appears in the system as Accepted, not yet matriculated. The days for orientation and start for MD/PhD programs are listed in a document available to all Admission Officers.

Did anyone here NOT designate your research as a meaningful experience? I am kind of iffy about whether or not it should be for reasons below:

Should: It shows you want to do research and can commit to it for 3-4 years on top of your 4 years of MD.

Should not: You have a 10,000 character essay to describe your research and should list another if it would greatly showcase your personal growth.
 
It's a very subjective, case-by-case issue. Like you said, you do get the chance to describe your experiences and your tone in that essay can showcase your passion. If you personally feel that you have 3 non-research experiences that had a greater/ more meaningful impact on your life or path towards medicine than your research, I'd choose those.
 
I know it's subjective. But it does not hurt to know if there have been people who got in without designating research as a meaningful experience for a more objective view. After all, we are scientists. We don't do well with subjectiveness, we do objectiveness. That is why we always have controls in our experiments. ;)

We should also have good intuition. You are applying for training into a research career. I doubt that checking it as most important or not will make or break an application, but to me anyone willing to spend 4+ more years as a grad student who doesn't put research as their most meaningful experience better have some pretty interesting stuff in those boxes.

Perhaps, someone screen you out for not marking "meaningful" at least one research experience. As a rule, if you are interested in MD/PhD programs, you should mark at least one of your research experiences as most meaningful, as well as one of your clinical experiences.
