Out-of-State Applicants
Although our primary obligation is to residents of the State of Alabama, we do consider competitive, out-of-state applicants with strong ties to the State of Alabama.
Please write a brief essay explaining your ties to the State of Alabama.

Optional Essay - 500 words maximum
The learning community at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine benefits from the inclusion of students with broad life experiences, as well as students from diverse backgrounds. The Admissions Committee encourages you to share life experiences that you may have had and/or important factors in your background that illustrate your readiness for practicing medicine in a multicultural society.

Good luck everyone. OOS here, but lived around the Mobile area for quite a while and still have family there so giving it a shot!

.
Same! I lived in Robertsdale for a short time then Gulf Shores for a while and still have family in Daphne! Good luck, giving it a shot as well!

Hey! I applied Early Decision. I'm a non-traditional applicant already living in the area. If you are as well, best of luck to you!
I did apply ED! I’m attending college right now but I used to live about an hour from Mobile. Thanks! Good luck to you too!

Did anyone who submitted their secondary already get any kind of confirmation email? I submitted a couple days ago and never got anything and I just wanted to be sure that’s normal!

I submitted Monday and didn't receive anything so assuming it's normal, especially since their site says the committee doesn't meet until September.

Is there a shot at getting an II and eventually an acceptance if you’re OOS and have no ties?

From what I’ve heard, they are very in-state biased. But of course, if you have a stellar application I’m sure they’ll consider you. I remember seeing on google that the percentage of out of state applicants they interview is pretty small. (I’m assuming you’re not from one of their feeder communities, which I’m pretty sure is considered in-state, but I could be wrong there)

I lived in Birmingham, Al for about 6 years when I was younger and I am currently attending Auburn University. Would these be considered strong enough ties?

I can't say what the adcom considers strong enough ties; I would apply with those ties, though.

Whats good fellas? Let me lay out some stats for ya...

MCAT: 510
GPA: 3.8
100+ hours of shadowing and volunteering
Wee bit of research over a summer
Varsity Sport
My left foot is also a full size smaller than my right.
I am also from the area.
I submitted my 2 application on 8/20. What are the chances I get an interview to this school, and when would I find out if I get one or not?

Pretty decent chances, man. You can find out any time between now and January/February. If you get the opportunity, I would recommend trying to get direct healthcare experiences either via volunteering or via employment. Good luck!

II for late September. I didn't receive the first invitation and the office luckily reached out again to double check why I hadn't accepted. It wasn't in my spam folder, so if you applied early and haven't heard from South it might okay to contact them.

When did you submit your secondary?

Congrats! Were you an early decision applicant? Don’t they only start sending regular decision interview invites in October?

Thank you!! Nope I'm not early decision but my interview is on October 17 though

Are you asking a question?

OOS applicant, strong ties to Mobile area and Daphne... submitted back in July, complete early August... still a whole lot of silence... how far along is USA with IIs? Seems like they are just wrapping up the ED applicants?

What happen in your last cycle that prevented you from getting in, if you don’t mind me asking? You seem to have great stats for someone in state.

Does anyone know how they send out acceptances? Phone call, email, letter?

They felt that I was lacking in shadowing hours. I found some physicians to shadow over the summer and reworked my app (personal statement, activities, etc.) and it all worked out.

Random question, but does anyone know if there’s a Facebook page for people who have been accepted? I saw on old threads that those are a thing sometimes haha

Anybody heard anything lately? OOS but with strong instate ties
