2019-2020 Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM-Virginia)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thank you! And you’re sweet for replying so fast!! Does VCOM really practice yield protection? Now I’m worried about another thing hehe I also heard that VCOM fills its class very early; is this true?

Sorry for all the questions, I’ve been a ball of mess since I found out my shadowing dates

I’m very interested in primary care (rural area is a +), have a few friends who absolutely love VCOM, aaand would love to stay near my family in the state.
I'm usually just working on my manuscript so I always have my computer open and have no self control when it comes to ignoring notifications from SDN 😆
I'm not sure exactly how much they may or may not practice yield protection, but I wouldn't focus on that! Think about how your stats show you're well prepared to enter medical school because that's how admissions will look at it!
In terms of filling early, I am also unsure. What I DO know is that they look for applicants in their target region first. So, I'm a NY resident living in CT (for grad school) and admissions told me that no matter how competitive my application may be, I probably wouldn't get an interview until January, at the earliest. That's just how they function. When I went to the open house back in February, they were still interviewing people so their class was not full yet!
And you're alright! This whole process tends to make people crazy (yes, I am included in that)

When you say target region, does that include VA? It’s my home state also good luck on that manuscript !!!

So from their website they say, "VCOM focuses on preparing osteopathic physicians to serve in the rural and medically underserved areas of Southern Appalachia, including but not limited to Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, and the surrounding southern states." And seeing as this campus is located in Virginia, I would definitely think they would be more willing to pick applicants from VA because they know you are more likely to choose to go there!
Also thank you! It has been dragging over me for wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too long!

I feel you on this. Yield protection would suck but they should at least give an interview to see our true interest in their program. 4.0 and 512 here so I’m concerned about the same thing.

Does anyone know if this includes the regions around different campuses? For example I live in the Florida panhandle, 3 hours from Auburn. Any input on if they would consider that in their region?

I would assume that yes, they would look for people within a certain distance from the school. However, the way that their website is set up, there is only one admissions site for Virginia, Carolinas, and Auburn so the target region is listed as the same. Maybe reach out to the Auburn admissions and see what they say!

EDIT:
From their Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine- Auburn Campus -VCOM-Auburn - Choose DO page: "VCOM seeks to admit the greater portion of the class from qualified applicants who grew up in or are based in Alabama, followed by students from the southern Appalachian and Delta states; and traditionally medically underserved regions. (Target states for all VCOM campuses include Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia). "

Do you have DO shadowing? Maybe that’ll help! Precisely why I’m waiting until I add VCOM

I’m assuming my 16 hours will not be competitive then
It's not about the number, it's about the quality of the hours. They're more interested in you actually understanding what DOs do and how they operate in a clinic. It's also important whether or not you can create a relationship with a DO who would be willing to write a letter for you.

In regards to the LOR, if you submit them through AACOMAS do you just list the individuals who wrote the LOR on your AACOMAS app or leave it blank?

I believe that the curriculum and and everything is the exact same at all campuses. I am choosing my campus preferences based on location.
Current first year student here! The curriculum is the same for all four campuses. I picked to go to Auburn for the location and resources offered by Auburn University. Keep in mind Carolinas is the only campus that isn’t associated with another university. Also board scores is something to look at across the campuses as well. Good luck!

I am having trouble with my letters. Under "Document Status" they have my letter packet marked received from AACOMAS, but under "Status" it still says my letters of recommendation are Incomplete, despite having entered them in my secondary and submitting. Any insights as to why this is?

Mine was like this too. It changed several days later

Submitted secondary but my application status shows incomplete for LORs, but then under the document status, it has received all my LORs. Anyone else have this issue?
I also have this issue, but I just submitted. Did your application finally become complete?

No I checked about and hour ago and it hadn’t changed yet. I emailed them on Wednesday but haven’t heard back.

I had this issue as well!

I emailed them to give them an update and was told the LOR check mark still might take a while before turning green because an actual VCOM admin has to check to make sure the letters indicated on the secondary has been received from AACOMAS. For me, I think this took about a week?

Oh makes sense, thank you for sharing!

Hey, this may be a dumb question but I couldn't find the answer online-- do they accept AP credit to fulfill prerequisites?

So I received an email yesterday saying I was complete. I went to my portal and I have a new tab for scheduling an interview but the link doesn't work. Anyone else have this happen?

When did you submit? I submitted 10+ days ago and haven’t received a complete email, but my application says complete on the portal.

I never received a complete email either and submitted my application the first week of July. I just emailed their office to see why as all my items shown as complete on my portal.

Can anyone give me II chances? Received secondary 7/5 before MCAT scores were in, submitted today. sGPA: 3.82, cGPA: 3.86. MCAT scores just came out today: 497 (123, 127, 122, 125). Definitely lower than expected and retaking 9/6. ECs include some DO and MD shadowing, free clinic volunteer, and 1300+ research hours.

Your GPA is higher than average. Its your MCAT thats worrisome. Its good your retaking.
Do you have a DO letter? And have you already submitted?
The rest look fine. Also do you have leadership roles?

They place a high emphasis on GPA. Also, one of the cheaper applications because one primary and one secondary cover all campuses.

I do have a DO letter, multiple leadership roles, and just submitted the secondary yesterday!

well im not adcom so i cant really give the best advice. The only thing that sticks out is the MCAT.
I wish you best of luck this cycle!

II today! Received complete email this morning and saw an interview tab on the portal. Got the email for interview later in the afternoon

I apologize if this has been answered, but how many days does it take to receive a secondary upon primary submission? Thanks!

I got all of my secondaries (except NOVA's) within two weeks. Most within the first week of it being verified
