2020-2021 Pain Fellowship Interview Thread

Hey y’all,

I’m a bit late to the party here but thought I’d join in. Applying from EM so I know my odds aren’t great. I have good scores, good LOR, and did a Pain rotation. Unfortunately I don’t really have anyone to advise me in this process.

So far I have 2 interviews that I got in mid-March, nothing since then. I applied to 80 programs, and about 20 have sent out invites thus far. At what point should I start to worry? Seeing that I was 0/4 for invites sent out today isn’t giving me a great feeling...

Isn't 2 at this point in time good? It looks like 30ish programs sent invites so far 1/3 of all programs. I am assuming it is still early given all the COVID. This is just my opinion though.

Yeah I would generally agree. I don’t think the usual timeline can be expected in the slightest at this point. Each program probably going by own priorities in these unique times I would assume.

Applied to both UCSF and Stanford and haven't gotten a rejection nor invitation. But I applied pretty late in February so I'm guessing they're going in chronologic order. That, or I'm in the 'maybe' pile lol

Thanks @blastoff and @ErrantWhatever. I was hoping that I'd have more invites by this point, but I'm glad to have 2 at least. Just sucks getting passed up for a lot of the recent invites. Hopefully it's still early given COVID. Best of luck to everyone!

Out of curiosity, programs like Emory and UCLA that have March and April interview dates, did they end up doing these interviews virtually or did they cancel them altogether?

I just want to confirm, it seems like duke's email to me at least indicated that they have sent out first round interviews only, not that they rejected me (even if that may just be semantics). Did others get a flat rejection email?

I got the same message as you probably, but I read it as a rejection. "The fellowship receives hundreds of applications from many qualified candidates each year." That line is a classic rejection line. Ain't gonna be a second "round" of invitations for a program like Duke because no one is cancelling a virtual interview.

I actually worry that’s gonna be the case at almost every program. Lots of first round interview invitees who won’t cancel a virtual interview so people who would otherwise have gotten a second round invite won’t get one. So essentially, I suspect there will be a big gap between the number of interviews for “top candidates” and everyone else. Maybe I’m wrong? Who knows.

those programs will get a very nice reality check when they end up not filling because of silly practices like interviewing people who would never come to their program

No one wants to reject someone outright as they often move down their list of interviewees with cancellations and the fear of not filling. At the end of the day medicine in general is a very small world also, and everyone works to minimize negative interactions.

I'm told the application quality is down a bit overall this year although the numbers are up, but with the flux in major academic programs and the COVIDness, this will be an atypical application season for sure.

I would not stress missing out on any big names, as many places are cruising on the reputations built by giants long gone.

how do you know this information?

It's a small world and everyone is happy to talk if you're willing to listen. If you hang around long enough and can stomach the egos, you end up knowing many people. There's not much to do right now but reconnect with friends?

I've also been through a couple rounds of selection at different ivory towers for residency and fellowship applicants.

I just looked back at last year's interview thread, and by this time last year (4/12), 38 programs had sent out interviews. We are right at 38 programs now, so it seems like perhaps the schedule is still on the same track.

I was told the number of applicants skyrocketed this year but the attendings at our institution said the applications are also strong

that several people I know with excellent applications only have 1-2 interviews and have applied to 20+ on the list that people are posting thus far
Did they apply to programs unrealistically? I.e are they non-anesthesia DOs/IMGs/FMGs applying for programs outside the state where they are now?

I would imagine applying unrealistically would be applying to brand name schools that dont have any history what so ever of accepting DO/IMG. At this point does IMG or DO really make that much difference if you have good (not godly) scores?

According to those outcome charts someone posted in here from the match a couple years ago, it appears that it does.

I always thought LOR, research, interest in the field >> board scores or where you graduated medical school for fellowship in general, including pain

this would be ideal but LORs all variations of generic these days, everyone does research to put it on their resume, and those two things help gauge someone’s interest in the field. Unfortunately I’m sure anesthesia residency, step scores, AOA, etc play a key role. I’m sure this is especially the case for first round invites.
