2020-2021 Waitlist Support Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
so historically has early movement led to more movements after apr 30th? Thanks for your insight🙂
I think it also depends strongly on the yield of the school. If the people being pulled off the waitlist are those who likely don't have any other acceptances, it might lead to less movement later on. However, any waitlist movement before April 30th means that they have dipped below their threshold of over acceptance/class size, and taking people off the waitlist is only because they are completely sure they will not end up having a lower/higher than expected class size. So you can at least find some comfort knowing that the waitlist movement is starting at all, because who knows how many people have been accepted off of the WL and are going to decline the acceptance offer when they already have one at some other school. SDN is not indicative AT ALL of the general population of applicants, and anyone who self-reports they got off the waitlist your hoping to get off of has no obligation to tell you they don't plan on going.

My suggestion ( and is advice I need to follow ) is to stop worrying about what your chances are and move forward if you have already done everything you can like sending an update letter or LOI. You're only gonna find more to worry about surfing SDN. You will get pulled off the waitlist if you deserve it, and just because you don't this year, does not mean you don't deserve it next year or whenever you choose to apply again. Good luck fellow WL homie, we are all in this together.

let me just find 5000 to reapply real quick.
Praying for you my man!!! We will all make it. Even if we won’t all be physicians (ik its our dream) I’m sure we will survive and thrive!! Keep your head up king, I bet youre an awesome person and that’s what really counts. Fwiw I’m struggling too and I feel you.

yep, i just wish they were not stringing us along. i'd rather know for sure right now so i could plan my future. thank you though i appreciate the kind words. as someone in their 30's i just have low tolerance for a school not matching the same professionalism that they expect from us. very low tolerance for the hypocrisy of this whole process. anyways cheers! enjoy the day!

I wholeheartedly agree that there is, unfortunately, plenty of disrespect and a lack of professionalism in the admissions process as potential applicants outnumber spots by such a large number that there is always someone to take a spot, regardless of the treatment they receive. Cheers to you as well!

I don't know, and didn't mean to imply that it did. I only meant that more movement is better than less, and early movement is better than late. If nothing else, early movement means you are left hanging for less time.

Early movement can be a sign of a lot of future movement, but not necessarily. All it means is that at least that school had a need, and was on the ball and did something about it early. To me, that's better than the alternative, but it's not necessarily a reliable indicator.

Bottom line -- if you are sitting around waiting for movement, is it better to see something happen early, or to see nothing?

just when i thought this misery failed wait was finally coming to an end, the school im WL'd at released a notice that we wont know our position on the ranked WL until potentially july 2. this process CANNOT at this point get any worse.
This is just pure evil. What it means is that your position is locked in, but they are not going to provide any transparency to you until it is all over, since, I guarantee you 7/2 is so close to the end that I'm sure it's right around their CTE date. This means you're never going to know anything until after you have received a call or it is obvious that you are never going to receive one. Evil!!!

what do you think is their reason for doing something like this? my thought was that they are going to cherry pick students that they need but without the ranked wL? or am i getting too deep into conspiracy thinking ha.

Just looked back at my 1 WL school's thread from last year... they started accepting off the waitlist April 29th/30th last year... rip
Not at all. There can be MANY reasons for a delay, like maybe a global pandemic. Waaay to soon to rip!!!!

1 WL school is less than ideal, but no movement by 5/1 means NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hang in there.

If the list is ranked, it is ranked. They have a choice. If they told you it's ranked, I'd take them at their word and believe them. No conspiracy. It's a legit way to do it that involves no decision making on their part after ranking the list. It means they are okay with the class becoming a little out of balance at this point, and they are not looking to replace male with male, ORM with ORM, etc.

The lack of transparency is really pure evil, given how uptight they just know everyone is. It just goes to what you said before about the "sellers' market," because they know there is no consequence to treating people like this, and they don't want to be bothered providing periodic updates like the good schools do, or to have to deal with everyone calling and e-mailing them constantly. So, they are saying, in essence, don't call us, we'll call you, between now and the end of the cycle. EVIL!!!!

It would cost them NOTHING to tell you your place on the list so you can plan accordingly.

crazy ugh....no words.

Question for anyone in a similar position, if you were fortunate enough to have a DO acceptance under your belt but are on the WL for an MD program that is your first choice - are ya'll putting down deposits for housing at said school or waiting until the last minute to hear back from the WL before all of that?

Exact position. Waiting till last minute, but judging from past years at my WL MD school they have used their WL positions well before I would have to worry. I would suggest trying to find out their timeline if possible

Literally same boat. But not entirely sure what to do. I think I might look into putting a deposit down because WL movement at my top school seems unlikely according to past years. :////

Have there been any general thoughts/predictions as to how much WL movement could occur at state schools this year?
Yeah this is what I’m wondering.. I’m currently on a highest ranked highest priority wait list at my top choice school which is the state school I’m currently doing my master’s and did my undergrad at. I would totally cry if I got in this week. According to their past years threads the Friday after April 30th is when calls start going out. Anxiety through the roof 😭

I'm in this exact situation. My DO school starts first week of June (F**k me, right?). I have acquired a lease but have yet to sign. I'm trying to wait it out.

It's an n of 1, but my state school has seen more movement this cycle so far compared to previous years. But, as I've discussed with the almighty @KnightDoc, movement of [12] in previous years compared to [19] this year isn't really a notable difference.

I can't get over how terrible the application cycle is set up. Not just this cycle, but in general. Leaving applicants to get a decision potentially RIGHT BEFORE classes start is pure evil. Everyone wonders why there is a shortage and severe mental health crisis among physicians....

Anyone else just totally putting off reapplication stuff... I know I need to start focusing but I don’t know if I have the energy for it and panic mode hasn’t set in😂
How many waitlists you waiting on?

Does anyone have any info on WL movement for Dartmouth?? Everyone on that thread has been silent

State schools are part of the same ecosystem, so there are no general thoughts regarding state schools versus private.

The two things governing movement are the extent to which people hold multiple As, and the extent to which schools over accept in the first round. Public/private are not distinguishing features, because there are schools in both groups that historically have a lot of movement and schools that don't.

Not only reapplications, but I'm seeing jobs I'm qualified for pass right in front of my eyes too...if I'm forced to take a (*another) gap year, I'll have to find a job, but I don't feel comfortable applying if the outlook for me is that I'll have to quit in a month and a half. Damn this cycle to hell

For schools ranked in the top 10, is it fair to assume that the vast majority of waitlist movement would happen next week? My thinking is these schools will have less of that trickle down effect. Just want to know when to have more of a sense of closure. Looks like nobody posted for some of these schools after May 13th last year, but not sure if thats just because sdn is a small sample.
No. It's fair to say it will happen when it happens.

You are correct about little trickle down effect (although, PLENTY of people turn down T20 for state schools due to location and money, so it's not unheard of!), but, there is plenty of movement between top tier schools that does not involve trickling down. There is also less movement in general because some of them have very high yields.

On the other hand, there is no rush for them to make WL calls next week, because many people would happily trade up to them whenever they receive a call. Bottom line, no, next week is not a drop dead deadline for WL movement anywhere, even T10. If you truly want closure, withdraw. Then, you'll have closure. Otherwise, you definitely have a shot until the school tells you otherwise, and no school is done done by 5/13, even if the lack of posts on SDN makes it look that way. Activity will peak in the next two weeks, but it will continue into late May and June.

Came here with the same question. I feel like that thread got a little awkward for those of us still on the WL. In past threads looks like movement started about a week after April 30th

Every time I hear of someone getting accepted off of a school im WLed at, my soul dies a little bit 🙁
This is my biggest fear come tomorrow haha it's going to be hard until we get that call (which I'm manifesting will come!!) but hey! you have 5 WL - you are bound to get accepted to at least one of those. I highly expect to hear of an A from you @Microbe_Hunter and am already hyped for you!!

This. Thanks for pointing this out. I'm not the only one in my circle of friends who opted for a state school instead of a T20; it's a misconception that there isn't overlap in those admitted, or that everyone who chooses a school chooses based on prestige. I can't comment on DO schools, but I don't think there's any hard and fast rule to which tier of school's WL moves fastest.

Thanks man!! I appreciate your kind words, your support, and your belief!! I've lost most of my hope, but I'm coming to terms that it's not the end of the world if I don't get in. Wishing the best for you and praying for you!

Wishing everyone the best of luck once tomorrow rolls around!! I’m wondering if that’s when the bulk of WL movement going to begin. My schools have been pretty silent so far. Quivering in my boots right now!
