Hey yall, I have my admissions day event next week, but I havent had a phone call to schedule my interview. It may be because of the holiday, but just getting a bit worried LOL. Can the interviews happen the day after the admissions day (compared to other interviews that happen on the same day on the 'orientation'/'admissions' day).

They called me the day after my admissions day, they could call you before or after. You will get an email early next week letting you know to expect a call. There were multiple days available for scheduling.

Has anyone else not gotten a call to schedule their interview yet? For the people who did admissions day this week?

I decided not to submit my secondary to HMSOM after struggling to find any information about the school on their website. They boast an individualized and open 4th year, but fail to share any specifics regarding what you can actually do with this final year. I even went through the very thick student manual and it was equally as vague. I couldn't find any info about research or anything unique or specific to comment about in their 500-word why us essay. If anyone on admissions sees this, please either remove the why us essay or provide us with info about your school.

You need to fill around 40 weeks of electives in 4th year, after taking Step 2. This is pretty typical of any medical school (at least the electives and dead time in 4th year are) but the difference is you finish Step 2 in late March of your 3rd year so a few months earlier. It is completely unstructured/self-scheduled and you can do this in a choose your own adventure combination of:

1) Self-directed research/study/vacation time for up to 12 weeks
2) School-run electives, these are all pass fail and 2-4 weeks long and they offer literally hundreds in every specialty
3) Away rotations
4) Getting a free MBA or MPH which eats up most of the 40 weeks

As far as I know (like any other US MD/DO program) you would need to take time out of this cycle to do a formal research year if you want to apply to derm or something.

Happy to clarify anything else about the program

Is it possible to get the MBA and take some electives? If so, about how many electives could you feasibly squeeze in?

Yes, MBA is remote and at night so you could conceivably fill your whole year with electives while also doing MBA if you want.

Schedule is like this -

Finish Step 2 in March/April 3rd year
Electives/vacation March of 3rd year - July of 4th year
MBA officially starts July of 4th year so at that point you have some online night classes
People would typically also do away rotations (if applicable) July - September 4th year while in MBA
Submit ERAS September 4th year

After this you are interviewing for residency & almost all of your required credits are satisfied by being enrolled in MBA program. You could take electives purely for fun or do nothing at all except MBA for the rest of medical school. Some people say it's a good thing to take some electives late 4th year just so you're not starting intern year having not set foot in the hospital for a year. I don't remember the numbers off the top of my head but I believe there are 4 weeks of electives you have to take during 4th year outside of MBA to meet credit minimums.

Is Hackensack interviewing later into the cycle, or have they basically given out all their interviews?

I think the increase in interviews is due to the increase in class size. During the info session, one of the deans mentioned that they had been ramping up the class size every couple of years, now at a size of 140 students. I'm not sure what year the data on admit.org is from, but I imagine that with a larger class size comes more interviews and likely a similar percentage of acceptances to maintain their yield.
the class size hasn’t increased in 3-4 cycles and it’s 160

Does anyone know when the next round of admission day events are being held?

My application was under review on November 12.. any chance of getting an interview

How long after receiving admissions day email, do they let us know the interview date?

This actually makes for a pretty easy screening. Did you try reaching out to the staff? Did you try reaching out to a Student? Did you ask any current students if they know someone who could answer your questions? Part of assessing applicants is finding out whether they are one, resourceful, and two, interested enough to pursue another means of getting that information.

I agree. At first it was a bit hard locating things on their website but then I asked AI to do the searching for me and I found out about the human dimension aspect of their curriculum, and it gave me a whole lot more to write about. If you really want to go to the school you'll take an extra step in researching it. Although, it would be a whole lot easier to just make that information more accessible on their website

I am planning to take Mcat on Jan 10 to improve my score for the year 2024-2025. Will the Med schools will be alerted or Do I need to inform the schools.
If the schools get alerted if I have a lower score.. will there be a downside.
Most MD programs dont accept MCAT exams taken in January because the score will result near or at the end of the interview season. There are some DO schools that do, though.

That will be far too late for a majority of schools. Look up the policies for schools you applied to. Most schools will stop considering any mcat taken after September 2024 for this cycle.

R after 2nd interview. I know in past threads 2nd interview data points are rare, so I wanted to share my perspective. Seems like some people (not all) with 2nd interviews in past years had a similar experience as what I’m describing below.

I’ve had a lot of interviews at this point and Hackensack was by far my worst experience.
My 2nd interviewer was so aggressive and rude and it was almost like they wouldn’t believe anything I said. Yes I did a lot of impressive and cool stuff but it felt like I was constantly fighting to get them to even take me seriously and believe my application. When I explained things it felt like it was just going right over their head and they weren’t ready to understand anything. Again this was like my 9/10th interview so I think I had my interviewing skills down pretty well, but I really felt like I was the crazy one in the interview the way they were questioning my experiences. I was like okay fine whatever for that part but then they also had some pretty aggressive lines of questioning about a sick family member I wrote in my PS which I even debated reporting but I decided it was more passive and not blatant enough to report. Do they seriously think I made up a whole illness and story and narrative for a direct family member and lied through my teeth for the entirety of my application ?!? Absolutely bonkers. Not upset since I have other As, but I’m yet to have a good experience with this school. (I had applied to their BS/MD in high school and decided not to accept the offer because even high school me could tell the school was extremely novel and disorganized).

Dang sorry to hear that was your experience. Not do the typical SDN bs but did they just get back to you today? When were your interviews?

Ok that’s all I got but seriously I’m sorry your 2nd interview panned out that way. Glad you have other acceptances to rest on tho! Best of luck the rest of the cycle.

They got back to me today ! Don’t want to give exact interview dates but both were in November.

I have two other As, and tons of other T20 decisions pending so not upset/stressed at all, I guess I just wanted to share because I wasn’t able to find information in past threads especially about the 2nd interview. The only other anecdote I could find from might have been reddit I think ? In some past year someone for their 2nd interview had the interviewer do the interview with someone else’s file in front of them and insist that it was the applicants and had a similar aggressive line of questioning. I had brushed it off thinking it’s a one off thing won’t happen to me….

Anyhow, I hope you hear good news soon from this school, or any other

I’m so sorry this happened to you and am glad you have great options still on the board. Just to clarify, was this a second interview on the same day as the initial? I can’t remember how many I did for Hackensack.

A separate, second interview day for some mysterious reason is offered to only some applicants (which is what i’m referring to). The interviews on the first day went fine for me, uneventful.

Just got waitlisted around 10 am... I had one interview with a med student early november

+1 OOS WL, I interviewed twice (beginning oct and beginning Nov). Does anyone know how much movement there is on hmsom waitlist?
