2024-2025 Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences (Kansas City) KCU-COM

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I applied in late July. Received my secondary a week later. Then received an II in late Oct. but didn’t have my actual interview until Feb.
is that how long it usually takes to receiv e a secondary? just one week after sending the primary?

is applying (submitting primaries) july 1st too late? i know KCUCOM goes through interveiws quick.
Has anyone gotten an interveiw applying july?
I submitted my AACOMAS 07/14/2024 and received secondary invite 07/24/2024, interview invite for KCU 09/19/2024, scheduled for 01/27/2025. Hope this gives you a perspective!

I don't think July it is late at all, I applied quite late in the cycle. I submitted my primary 10/01, got my secondary invite a week later, then got my interview invite late October and I had my interview 02/18. Hope this helps a bit. I would suggest to reach out to admissions and ask them about the status of your app if this is your top/one of your top choices. They are always very nice and helpful!

It’s not late as others have mentioned above. But also I don’t know if you noticed the trend, people that submit later tend to interview later. Assuming you’ll also get invited for an interview, you want the earliest interview date you can possibly get when there are plenty of spots still open. Otherwise, you might have a higher likelihood of ending on the waitlist instead. Just my 2 cents.

I'm not really sure how the exam schedule works for OMS1, but would it be possible to take a day off in the middle of the week around mid-May? I've been planning on attending an important personal event for a few years now and wanted to plan ahead.

Exams are almost always on Fridays, with practical exams on Thursdays. Occasionally holidays alter that schedule but that is generally how it goes. If you know well ahead of time you can reach out to COMT scheduling and let them know the date you need to be free. They are able to work with you with enough notice from my experience.

That would be a question for the professors/dean of acadmeics. Not sure if any applicant would know.

Hi everyone, currently a first-year medical student at KCU here. I wanted to share some important information that may not have been communicated to prospective and accepted students. For the Class of 2028, KCU has eliminated independent core site rotation options. This means that during third-year rotations, students will no longer be able to set up their own sites. Instead, rotations will be assigned through a lottery system from the school's contracted sites which is the standard way of setting up rotations - link to current options here --> (KCU Core Clinical Clerkship Sites)

If you were planning to arrange your own third-year rotations closer to home or in specific locations, that would not be an option. This was a major factor in my decision to attend KCU, and had I known they could take it away, I might have made a different choice. Since deposit deadlines are coming up, I wanted to make sure you all had this information before committing.

Hope this helps!

Hey, thank you so much for letting us know, really appreciate it. Is there a benefit to doing third year rotations in specific locations for residency, or was it mostly for the option to rotate in a familiar area/near family?

Anyone know hoe difficult it is to stay in KC for third year rotations? Which sites are the hardest and easiest to get into?

every year has different popular sites dependent on the student makeup/wants. I’m an ms[emoji[emoji[emoji6][emoji6]][emoji[emoji[emoji6]][emoji[emoji6]]]] and KC was very popular and thus more difficult to get, but last year it was apparently not as competitive. Otherwise the general trend is that major city sites (Colorado, Michigan, California etc) are popular and the rural sites are less popular.

Most of the people that made their own rotations wanted to be closer to family (in an area our school doesn’t have a preset rotation at) or had a high desire to practice in a specific area.

I would argue that the effort is better placed into your sub-i’s in [emoji[emoji[emoji[emoji6][emoji6]][emoji[emoji[emoji6]][emoji[emoji6]]]][emoji[emoji[emoji[emoji6][emoji6]][emoji[emoji[emoji6]][emoji[emoji6]]]][emoji[emoji6][emoji6]][emoji[emoji[emoji6]][emoji[emoji6][emoji6]]]][emoji[emoji6][emoji6]][emoji[emoji[emoji6][emoji6]][emoji[emoji[emoji6]][emoji[emoji6]]]]]th year, because your core rotations are going to be pretty similar in most locations. So, yes, losing the ability to make a rotation is a loss. But having the school set up [emoji[emoji[emoji[emoji6][emoji6]][emoji[emoji[emoji6]][emoji[emoji6]]]][emoji[emoji6][emoji6]][emoji[emoji[emoji6]][emoji[emoji6][emoji6]]]]rd year rotations is still generally advantageous compared to some other DO programs if I recall.

There’s nuances to this question based on personal preference, but just my two cents.

There were a ton of people this year who wrote letters and didn’t stay (I’d say upwards of [emoji[emoji[emoji[emoji6][emoji6]][emoji[emoji[emoji6]][emoji[emoji6]]]][emoji[emoji6][emoji6]][emoji[emoji[emoji6]][emoji[emoji6][emoji6]]]][emoji[emoji[emoji6]][emoji[emoji6]]]+). Can’t say what got me to stay vs why others didn’t but it’s not full proof.

Has anyone that interviewed on 2/18 received any news yet? At this point how likely is an acceptance?

Current 1st year here, got just a bit of time to kill over spring break, down to answer some questions.

How has your experience at KCU been so far?
Only going to speak about KCU as a whole, and not about either Joplin or KC campus, and might ramble a bit.

Overall it’s been good, but I also haven’t really compared it to friends in other medical schools. It’s tough for sure, but they did a decent job easing us into it in terms of pure workload. There are some things like an additional course that almost everyone have passionate opinions about, but I’m sure I will have something to vent about in a different school. I would say just be mentally prepared to accept that you will always be in a state of catching up, and really get your schedule organization down as early as possible. First semester is somewhat forgiving, but second semester is more fast paced. If you want to tweak your studying habits, do it during the first block. All that being said, I got along pretty well with most of my classmates, and we still do have some free time, usually after exams.

This is not comprehensive and just what I could think of at the time of writing, and my opinions only. Another student may have a different list:

Pros
  • Some professor's slides are 👌you could just read the slides and be chilling
  • Second years who are in tutoring prepares practice questions for the core blocks as well as the OMM course
  • There isn't too strong competition between classmates and at least in my experience, everyone tends to get along with most people despite the size of the two campuses.
  • For the KC campus, there tend to be more clubs available to participate in events and I think the early clinical experience is better in KC.
  • For Joplin, there isn't really much to do, and depending on how you view it, could be a pro where there is fewer distractions than KC.
Cons
  • Some professor could use some improvement in how they organize their slides
  • There is one course added for our year that could have been better implemented.
  • There are some weirdly placed required classes that could've been done over Zoom.
  • I think research opportunities are okay, but more effort could be made to increase opportunities.
  • Some clubs seem to be only available to the KC campus, and it takes active effort for Joplin students to gain the same access.
  • For Joplin, some things you will have to drive to either Springfield or Bentonville to buy stuff or do activities.

My reasoning is mostly being in an area that my family is in and just having more exposure to programs where I'd like to match for residency. many people use the 4th year/sub-Is for this but I have a strong inclination for where I'd like to practice and I just wanted to be able to expose myself to that while also being close to my support system.

When does most WL movement start for KC campus? Or will there likely be very little? Also is there anybody who has not heard back from their Interview date or is it all waitlist now.

Intl WL 03/24. Interviewed 02/18. Does anyone know when most WL movement happens for either campus?
