Hello all pre-dents!

The ADEA AADSAS app for the 2023-2024 cycle is now open!

It would be a good idea to jump in now and start filling it out, answering questions, and uploading transcripts to help speed up the process for when you want to apply! This will save you a few hours, or more, of valuable time! Also, the sooner you apply, the sooner your app will be verified and the sooner it will get in the hands of admissions.

If you have specific questions about the application, feel free to respond below!

BUT please read this post FIRST before asking your question, it may have your answer!

Good luck to all those who are applying this cycle!

Common AADSAS Application Questions:

Can I edit my application after submission?

Short answer, no. However, you are able to edit a couple of things: demographic information, contact information, updated experiences, and updated transcript entry. You cannot submit more LOR's or update your DAT score from the application (if you did end up retaking, schools will still get the official score). However, if the LOR's were added (but not submitted by the writer) they should still be added to your application. You just can't add another letter writer. Generally, it's probably easier to have everything ready and then submit, rather than trying to figure out after submission what you can and can't edit.

What if I didn't do well on the DAT and wish to retake it during the cycle, how will that affect my application?
Your best bet is to include your current score and indicate when you plan on retaking the test. Schools will place your application on hold until they receive the updated score, and once they do it will then be passed to admissions for review (assuming everything else is completed). This is better as you won't be immediately screened out in the admissions process should your DAT score be lower than you'd like. It's also better to submit right away if you have everything ready outside of your DAT score. This way, your application can be placed in the queue to become verified (which can take anywhere from 1-3 weeks depending on when you apply), once verified, your application will be ready to be reviewed by each school once the DAT score becomes verified (which itself can take 2-4 weeks). Some schools will accept an unofficial score report to start reviewing your application.

Can I have more than 4 letters on AADSAS, can I choose which letters get sent to which school?
No, and No. AADSAS only allows a maximum of 4 LOR's to be uploaded. Should you wish to send another letter, you will have to contact each school you wish the letter to be sent, and once confirmed (ask for what email to be sent to), have your LOR personally send the letter to each school. You cannot come in contact with the letter. You also cannot choose which letters can be sent where. I recommend having 2 Science LOR's, 1 Supervisor (From a job, volunteer position, or research) and then a non-science LOR (Could be a prof outside STEM, or a dentist). These 4 letters will cover almost 90-95% of all school requirements. However, make sure you keep track of each school you plan on applying to. I recommend having an excel sheet open to help keep track.

When is it considered Early vs. Late for applying? Does it affect my chances of admission?
Generally, the consensus is June/July applications are early, August is on time, and September or later is considered late. Because dental schools work on rolling admissions, it's first come-first served. So the sooner you apply, the better your chances are in receiving an interview and pre-December acceptance. That's not to say if you apply in September you can't get an interview, but statistically, you are fighting for fewer interview seats available than someone who applied in June. So, generally, yes, the later you apply the harder it will be to get an interview and be accepted. Simply because schools have filled most of their interview slots. Public schools generally fill sooner than Privates, but it's school dependent. If you are in a position where it's apply in November or wait until the next cycle, I would recommend waiting as you want to maximize your chances and being a first-time applicant is to your advantage. Reapplicants are generally expected to have improvement in their application and held to a higher standard compared to first-time applicants. So you want to try and be one cycle and done!

How many schools should I apply to?
This question is difficult to answer as each applicant is different. Your best bet is to post a formal WAMC's thread and have our community offer suggestions based on your overall application (do your research before posting!). Someone who has a high GPA/DAT score could afford to apply to fewer schools (as long as they're a mix of safety, range, and reach) than someone who has a below-average GPA (<3.5 Overall) and below-average DAT (<20.5AA). However, the average number of schools applied to across all applicants is about 10.

How do schools handle Pre-Requisite coursework, how many CC credits can I have?
Each school handles prerequisite coursework differently. A few schools require all prereqs to be completed before applying, but most are fine having you indicate on the transcript entry that they are planned credits. Just make sure nothing is planned for the summer before enrolling. Schools will not accept prereq credits that are planned for the summer before entering dental school, they must be completed by the spring of the year you plan to enter school. In regards to CC credits, some schools do not care how many CC credits you have, some have a maximum of 60, and some have even less than that. It's up to you to determine which schools have which requirements. Some will be more lenient if you are just barely over the number, you can always reach out to admissions for clarification.
**Make sure you check each school's pre-requisite requirements on what courses are required vs. recommended. Failure to check will mean your submission to the school just became a monetary donation should you not take a course that was required and not indicated as planned.
* Stony Brook requires all pre-reqs be taken at the time of application, not matriculation (so if you plan on finishing up pre-reqs after you apply, don't apply to Stony Brook) *

Check this thread/excel file (also linked in my signature) to see which schools accept AP credit and which do not:

Check this post out about which schools accept/don't accept/kinda accept CC credits.

If I have a C- on only one (or more) pre-requisite course(s), do I have to retake it?
If it's a pre-requisite course you must have a grade > C for it to be accepted. Schools will not accept a grade of C- or lower for pre-requisite courses. You will have to retake the course for it to be accepted. You can take the course at your local CC if it's easier, it will not hurt your application. Schools will, however, average the 2 grades. Should you have a C- and then get an A, the course GPA will be averaged to ~2.85.

How does AADSAS Calculate my Overall, Science, and BCP GPA?
The GPA's are calculated using this breakdown, you can find the courses that count as Bio, Chem, Physics and Other Science HERE
Science and Non-Science Breakdown
BCP GPA:
Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Biochemistry
Science GPA: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Biochemistry and Other Science
Non-Science GPA: English, Behavioral Sciences, Non-Science

Is applying to a lot of schools expensive?
YES!
Applying to dental school is expensive! That's why it's critical to develop a well-rounded list of schools to apply to (and this is why), and not just apply to a ton of schools that might not even look at your application (refer back to WAMC). AADSAS charges ~$115 per school, with the first school being $264. If you're applying to the average amount of schools, that will cost you ~$1,300 to submit your application. This is before paying for each school's additional supplemental fee, which can range from $50-$150. In addition to this, you may have to travel for interviews (budget $1,000 per in-person interview) as well as pay a deposit if accepted (that can be another $1,000 - $5,000). So before applying, make sure to make a budget, and a plan, for how you plan on paying for applying. I believe it cost me ~$7,000 to apply (and enroll) in dental school. This number came from having to pay for study materials and travel to take my DAT, Apply to 9 schools, fly/spend the night to 2 schools for a required visit/tour, and place my $1,500 deposit (which is non-refundable).

So I have taken the DAT already last year but I didnt do so well. For this cycle, should I submit my application with the previous score or submit the application without mentioning the previous score, or should I submit my new score upon taking the DAT again. If I can submit my new score later, will I be able to make edits to the application that way I can show that I retook the DAT and did better on it? Im new to this process and was hoping someone can help guide me through the process.

I would submit the score and indicate on the application that you plan on retaking it. So at least you have a score attached to your name and they can expect another score to come along with it.

Alright and so with that, would I be able to make changes to the submitted application and add my new DAT score after submitting my application? Or will I just have to send my scores later. I feel that dental schools would see my previous score and reject me right away

They shouldn't reject you if they see you indicated you are retaking. They'll keep your app on hold until the new score arrives and then it will be sent for review.

The DAT score should automatically be added to your AADSAS app after you take it and it's been verified. You'll be able to add in a preliminary score from the day you received it, which you should definitely do since some schools can move your app forward then and will receive the official score shortly after. Just make sure you select all schools to receive the new score so you don't have to pay for each school after taking the exam.

How soon are you going to take the DAT? That would determine my feedback to your question.

Usually your old score will already be included in your AADSAS application (we will see both your unofficial disclosure and the official score released from the ADA). Not disclosing your DAT isn't usually a big deal since we focus on the official score reports. Ask your schools about how they might handle copies of unofficial score reports from you.

You usually cannot make changes once you submit your application except for directory information (name, email, address).

How do letters of evaluations work for AADSAS? I have 4 letters: 2 Chem, 1 Dentist, and 1 Dental school professor. However, one of the schools I am applying to requires a Biology professor. Am I able to use those 4 letters above for the schools that I want, and then substitute one of those letters for the Biology one for the one school that requires it? Thanks.

No, you can’t pick and choose. All 4 letters get sent to all schools. You will have to have a bio prof email their letter to the school directly or remove your dentist letter. (Most schools don’t require a dentist LOR)

How do some schools know whether or not my classes had labs? In community college all of my classes had labs within the lectures.

I think it would go with credit load. My biology classes were 3 credits with a 1 credit lab. My physics classes were 4 credits with a lab included. They might also just have knowledge of the school or could reach out and ask.

How do I submit my official DAT scores? I took it last year summer. When I first registered for the DAT, and I selected all of the dental schools on the list. Does ADA automatically send my official DAT scores to my ADEA AADSAS application portal, or do I need to request ADA to do that?

You just have to put your dent pin in and whatever else information they require when you put your preliminary scores in. It takes a few days for the scores to merge once you’ve put the information down

In trying to give you advice on how to manage your AADSAS application:
1) If you don't want schools to decide based on your last DAT, you should indicate a pending score when you submit your application. Many schools should put your application on hold until your new scores come in. If not, they can screen you on your old score, and usually your application will not be reviewed again once new scores are reported.

2) Once you submit your application, you cannot change any information on your AADSAS except for directory information.

This isn't any more complicated, and you need to manage your application. Make sure the schools know when you took the DAT and your provisional score report in July.

So I will be taking it July 28th.
Will this make it complicated and mess me up for this cycle?
It won't make it complicated. The only thing it will do is cause your app to be reviewed in August rather than when you submit it. Just like @Mr.Smile12 said, make sure to indicate you will be retaking the exam and you have a date scheduled, then they will put your app on hold until the new score comes in. It shouldn't mess anything up as long as you do that step.

Does anyone know if dental schools care if my letter of rec comes from an oral surgeon instead of a dentist?

I had an internship under an oral surgeon and it means a lot having him write my letter of rec. Does anyone think this would be an issue?

It’s not an issue. Though schools would prefer a general dentist than an oral surgeon simply because dental schools are there to create general dentists, not specialists. However if you think they can provide a solid letter then it’s fine. Just make sure you have hours shadowing a general dentist too. You can have some with oral surgeon but you want to make sure you have a majority of general dentistry as well.

Does it hurt my chances if I submit my applications on June 21st and take my DAT on July 19th? or is it better to submit everything together?

No, I would submit as soon as you can and indicate a planned date for the DAT. It will allow your app to get verified sooner and once the score comes in it’ll get marked completed. Don’t submit all at once because then it won’t get verified until late July.

I have a question on the institutional action. I was given academic dishonesty for a book review assignment. On the aadsas, there are two sections that deal with the IA. One mentions academic performance, and the other mentions student conduct violation. Should I check yes for both sections or should I check yes only for the student conduct violation section? Thank you!

@Mr.Smile12 any advice? I'm not sure what to say for this situation

Academic performance. (Student conduct is for things like getting caught drinking in the dorms.)

Looking for some advice on the application.
(1)In the experience section, what is the difference between "part time" or "temporary". I'm not sure what the difference is.
(2)I got a C- in general biology I, but have since gotten all B+ up to A in all my other biology classes as a biology major. I got mixed advice on the C-. Some said re-take it and others said just take upper level bios and do better. I did not retake it and took upper level bios ending with a 3.5 science gpa. In completing the application, some of the schools say they require a C minimum in general biology. I am concerned that this may mean that my application will be automatically not considered. I sent emails to some of the schools asking if an upper level bio can be substituted in place of general biology.
Looking here to see if anyone has any experience with this and how it was handled.

Just a quick question on the ADEA Application. So I'm a current junior and am planning to fulfill some of my prereqs for dental schools in my senior year. Is there a way to indicate this on the ADEA application? Should I just enter my full senior year course plan for the transcript entry section and then select those classes for each program's prereqs? Thank you!

Yes. And make sure to indicate they’re planned on the transcript entry for your senior year. And yes when you select schools and start to fill out/select classes for prereqs just select the planned courses that meet them. Make sure there’s no summer classes after senior year. Schools won’t accept summer prereqs the summer before entering dental school. Previous summer coursework is fine.

It’ll ask you to assign the class a grade. Just choose “planned” or whatever it says other than a grade.

Hi! I have a quick question regarding volunteer hours for the ADEA application. Under the experiences section of the application it allows me to pick between "Volunteer" and "Extracurricular Activities" at the beginning but also a box that allows me to check off whether the experience was compensated, for class credit, or volunteering later on. I was wondering if I chose to categorize an experience as an "Extracurricular Activity" (such as being a teaching assistant or being a major ambassador) where I volunteered my time and checked the box for volunteering (since I wasn't for compensated/received class credit) if it would count towards my overall volunteering hours or if the experience has to be initially categorized under "Volunteer". Sorry if that was a little confusing I just want to make sure schools get an accurate estimate of my volunteer hours.

If it's related to school then yeah, extra curricular and volunteer. If it was outside of school, like feed my starving children, or your local food bank/homeless shelter then I would classify it as volunteer work originally. I didn't have a whole lot, and personally, I wasn't asked much, if at all, my volunteer work during my interviews. So as long as you have it, they'll see it on your app. You should be alright if you have it on your app and don't lie about the experience and hours

I think in this case, the licenses are in reference to dental licenses, if you click on the drop down menu in AADSAS you only have a few options. Though you could certainly mention in the experiences sections that you contain a few licenses in scuba and briefly relate to dentistry and touch up on it if brought up in an interview

I am filling out the activities section for TMDSAS and AADSAS, and I am unsure how to enter the community engagement/volunteer hours. I have participated in 100+ different volunteer hours through several organizations, and my pre-dental advisor recommended I section the activities and hours for one organization by semester or by year instead of entering each event because it looks cluttered.

Would that be the correct way to enter it? I thought entering each event separately allowed me to provide a description to showcase my involvement instead of listing all the events in one. Does anyone have advice?

Sorry, I accidentally posted my question in its own thread.

I would do the multiple listings since you only get so much space to describe the experience and you want to make sure you can give a good view of what you did. How many experiences do you have?

If I took a class such as Biology 1 with the lab as well, however, the lab doesn't show on my transcript since it's incorporated in the class itself, is there a way to show schools that the lab was included other than just emailing every school I apply to and letting them know? Thank you!

I am a little confused on the transcript entry. So I intend to take micro and retake biochem in my gap year (aka in the next 12 months). Should I be putting this in my undergrad class list/when i request my transcript? Or wait until after? I know for each school you have to match the classes you have taken with your prereqs, so should micro be included eventhough I have not taken it yet?

you would just put it in and indicate that it is a planned course. You can still add in courses later during the academic update period which will first occur sometime in august/September for summer coursework, then December/January for the fall coursework.

So if you are worried about it being on your transcript or not, you could always add it later. However, if you are using microbio as a prerequisite, you should include it on your application now so schools see that you plan on taking it. if it's designated as planned, I don't think it has to be on your transcript when you send it in.

if it's like a 4 credit class, I think schools could figure it out from there. You could email/ask your prehealth advisor or prehealth center to see what they recommend. I think most schools, if your school is well known, can deduce the information about the lab if they've had previous applicants apply from the school using the same class. However, it never hurts to reach out to each school and ask for direct confirmation.

Thank you for the advice. I have 30 non-healthcare related community service experiences throughout my 4 years of college. An example of different entries I entered were: hand-made blankets for needy children, prepared snack bags for hospital care packages, and foodbank. My pre-dent advisor said to list them all together in one entry because they were all done with one organization.

Ahhh I see, yeah, if they were done within one organization I would try to condense them into one if possible. Just be very brief in the writing portion since you don't have a lot of space, and you can touch up more on it in interviews if asked.

An example for me, I had a student club I was a leader of, we did different volunteer events and I essentially just listed them under the one club, and when asked about it in my interview I just went more in depth. I wouldn't recommend having 30 different EC's on your app, readers would most likely get overwhelmed and idk if it would let you have 30. So definitely try to condense it down if you can.

I would just put it where you think you will, then when you take the course during the given semester and do your academic update you can update/change the course then. I had a chemistry course planned and submitted to schools for the fall, then things changed and I didn't take the class and just switched/updated my courses that I actually when the academic update period opened in December and I had my final grades determined. You'll just send in another transcript for verification when you do that.

I’m applying this cycle and it’s the first time I’m applying. Any advice on the whole process? Also, I’m retaking 2 classes that I got C- grades in for pre-reps do you guys know if I can take these classes online?

What would you say is the sweet spot in terms of the number of ECs on the app? I have 15 and have been wondering if that is too many.

You can. Check your academic advisor about whether they can count towards your degree.

Quality is better than quantity. Which ones are most germane for insight of your potential as a dentist? Don't put things in that are just filling spots.

I have a question on Casper. I'm applying to Temple and Case Western, and these schools are the only schools that require Casper on my list. I scheduled to take the exam on 6/1, and I was wondering if I can still submit my aadsas application on 5/31 before receiving the results?

You can. I would make sure that your AADSAS application is as perfect as possible. You don't have to submit on day 1, and remember that once you submit, you cannot revise the application if you find stupid unforced errors (spelling, incoherent grammar or sentences). Do not rush.

You won't get Casper results for 2-4 weeks after taking the exam. I believe schools get your results first before you do. So just take your time with submission. Read it over, again and again, to make sure it's perfect. I submitted it halfway through June and was totally fine. Good luck!

I don't think so. The Casper scores go directly to the schools. I don't think the scores are integrated with your AADSAS application (unless they figure out the IT details on this, but I haven't heard that they have) so that is just a different data point that will be put into your file. The schools should be able to integrate the scores on their end.

We have an @Acuity Insights representative here who can address your questions.

Yeah no, it doesn't get uploaded to AADSAS so nothing to worry about there. Schools should reach out to you once they receive your score to update your application. Or you can email them and ask. Casper will let you know when your scores have been sent as well.
