Auburn c/o 2017 Applicants!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
First time applying to Auburn, and first time applying in general! I have a lot of friends that go to Auburn, which were helpful in showing me how nice of a school it was. I found the supplemental essay more difficult than other schools, though.
Good luck to everyone! 🙂

The "Tell us why you want to go here"?! Uh....because you have a very program if I'm completely honest!!!!! I mean, I love the school for sure but I'll go wherever they take me 🙁

Did anyone else go to the lecture at UK by the new Interim Dean of Admissions at Auburn last night? He said that if you are a KY/AL resident and you meet the minimum requirements, you will get an interview. Just a heads up so we can start obsessing about the interview now. 😀

Psssshhhh lucky 😉 I live so close to KY!!!! My home town is 45 min away from Paducah. That should count right?!?!?!?

Dear Auburn,

I'd love to visit you. I'd love even more if you would let me in to your vet school.

Sincerely,

Irrelly

Ps. I'll bake you lots of vegan cookies if you let me in. K, thanks.

Bumping this and making you guys quiver in fear and dread.

Looked up last year's interview invites on here. Here are the dates: 1/9, 1/12, 1/13, 1/17, and 1/20

Those sound like the interview dates for OOS. If I remember correctly, contract and in-state are in March.....wait and see I guess.

They are indeed OOS. I kinda ignored all IS dates in my research

👍 quiver quiver!

Their holiday email about gave me a heart attack. Auburn, you tease.

i emailed them and they said early to mid january, will take about a week and will be in manageable batches of 40 so probably starting next monday the first batch will be received right?

Probably over thinking things because interview invites are so close but I have a few questions.

So I know Auburn averages your organic and physics grades. The statistics page also said they use your cumulative GPA. But do they use your last 45? And do they count the writing portion of the GRE?

I didn't get a holiday email! The last I heard was they would let you know if they would like to have your fall transcripts sent in. I never heard word of this either. Does this mean bad news for me? I haven't heard a peep from admissions since Oct. 1 🙁

Aubs doesn't want Fall grades, correct?

If they're having trouble deciding whether to offer you an interview or not (or if a fall class is an important pre-req), they might email you and request them. That's what happened to me last year.

If you get offered an interview they'll have you bring fall transcripts at that time.

Crap, I just sent mine today. Couldn't find anything about it on their website, so I just went ahead and sent them. Hope they don't mind. :scared:

i thought for sure emails and letters would go out today...anybody heard anything?

I'm contract so might be different from some of y'all...here's been my experience so far.

A little before the semester ended, I was told they would need my fall grades ASAP, and that attaching an unofficial transcript would be fine. Immediately after my grades posted, I sent my unofficial transcript. A few days after that, I was told my application was complete and that I will be notified late February about an interview in early March. (I've heard we get interviewed after the OOS people)

I have heard on good authority that all in-state and contract students with complete applications will be interviewed.

For the record, I did have quite a few required prereqs in fall, so maybe that's why they asked me to be so on top of it. I have not heard anything about sending my official transcript.

Any idea when OOS interviews are?

Just got mine as well. First thing I woke up to this morning. Definitely not a good way to start the day. 🙁

Rejected as well 🙁

🙁

Sorry to hear that guys...that sucks.

I'm sorry, guys. That's a terrible way to start the morning.

I've heard nothing yet...

I guess Auburn is doing rejections before interview invites this year? Anyone else hear anything?

Awe man.. Sorry guys. 🙁

Auburn is my IS school.. I'm getting impatient with all this waiting!!

Aw guys, I'm so sorry to hear that!! 🙁 That's no fair!

I'm nervous now because I still haven't heard anything. Auburn is in my top 5 schools, well top 3 if you exclude the two schools that I have minimal chance of getting in to. :scared:

Did anyone else get the rejection email twice? I just got a second rejection email this morning because apparently the format was wrong in the first one.

Thanks, Auburn, really needed to see that two mornings in a row. 🙄

I did. Because you know, I want my rejection to be formatted properly.

yeah doesn't it make you feel better knowing that that the rejection is properly formatted?...thanks auburn for telling me twice that you don't want me

Ouch. That's a bit of an admissions fail. :/ sorry. I know how you feel though. Last year I got the email from Florida and then a letter saying the same about a week later. It's like Yes, I got it the first time, thanks!

I'm still peeved about the comment posted in the rejections thread about Auburn not considering people with gpa's under 3.5. What are your guys' thoughts on the matter? I haven't received a rejection just yet, and my gpa was 3.49 including course repeats and transfer credits.

Fwiw, I reported a 3.49 last year and got an invite. I honestly think a lot of it is due to the increased number of applications they have received since they increased the number of oos spots available. Like I said in the rejection thread, you're competing against those who applied with you, not previous years so there will be fluctuations in gpas that are looked at each year. Considering there avg gpa for admitted students has been around a 3.5 I have a hard time believing they rejected every single person who was below that number since it wasnt an explicitly stated cutoff point. Could be wrong though.

I'm not really surprised, I think a lot of schools are starting to do this just because it helps them deal with the sheer volume of applications they receive every year. They can't read all 900 applications, so they weed out the lowest gpa's first and go from there. I know when I got rejected from Minnesota they said that they considered their applications in three stages: academic credentials, non-academic credentials, and interview. If your academic credentials aren't competitive enough with the majority of the applicant pool, then you're out and the rest of your application is never even considered. Sucks for those of us with lower gpa's, but what can you do?

When the rep from Mizzou came to talk to the pre-vet club at my university he talked a lot about not considering applications with less than a 3.7 gpa, and how a well qualified candidate with a 3.69 may not be considered at all because they're below the cutoff. I'm not sure if that's the actual cutoff they were using that year or if he just pulled it out of thin air (I got the distinct impression that he was trying to scare some of the younger students), but basically the "arbitrary" cutoff seems to happen at a lot of schools.

Absolutely. I was anticipating the increase in competition, I just didn't realize that it would so heavily influence how they go about considering applicants. I knew that my GPA was lower than I would like, but I was hoping (and am still hoping) that the other aspects of my application could play a factor in the decision as well. I'm glad that you mentioned that you had a 3.49 gpa reported last year as you go to penn (another school I applied to) and got an invite to interview at auburn. I still think that no news is good news and that for every awesome 4.0 applicant, there is someone on the opposite side of the scale balancing it out. I am very interested to see how this goes. I knew I would have rejections but am staying optimistic 🙂.

but basically the "arbitrary" cutoff seems to happen at a lot of schools.

Oh, yeah! I was very thorough this application cycle, taking in to account every possible statistic or reason I would be deemed unsuitable for a school before I applied. After last cycle (rejected to 5 schools including my IS and waitlisted after an interview at 1), I wanted to not throw my money at schools that I realized would never accept me based on stats alone (ie Wisconsin & Michigan). However, I imagined the arbitrary cut off would have some wiggle room for students with high marks in areas other than numbers. As I applied to 9 schools, I should not be shocked by the increase in competition seeing as I tried to cast a wide net for this very purpose. I guess we'll see!

I reported a cum gpa of 3.39 and still have yet to hear anything.

My cumulative is 3.50 exactly, no repeats though. My organic-physics average is 3.75 and my GRE is 316, and both of those were way above last years average. Not that that means anything.

I also answered in the other thread but i believe it has more to do with the fact that there was a difference in the reported GPA and the fact that they did not use the grades from the first round of courses taken. According to my pre-vet advisor it is a big red flag if you make a mistake in the course/grade section.
I agree with Orca that if the average is a 3.5something someone has to have under a 3.5

I did too. I actually got my hopes up for half a second thinking "maybe they changed their mind"

on the vmcas, it says to type in ur gpa as it is listed on your primary transcript so i did which was a 3.55, and my official transcript from my school fau also said a 3.55 so it wasn't the way i calculated it, it was the way my undergraduate college calculated and i can't change the way they calculate it or the way they report it on my transcript so i don't think it was the fact that i made the mistake of not including the repeated courses

I saw further back in this thread someone had stated that all KENTUCKY students get an interview automatically? Does anyone know where that information came from? I'm just asking because the pre-vet advisor at UofL said that there will be rejection emails sent for KY students before invites. Either way I would be happy to interview.. just wanted to know if it would be narrowed down before interviews??
