AZCOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

Every apartment comes with a microwave as far as I know.
On that note, what things are included in the studio apartments? I know there is not furniture, but besides the fridge and microwave is there anything else (I am thinking shower curtain, garbage cans, etc.)? Are there shelves in the patio storage area? Can we BBQ on the patio?

Do the apartment buildings have elevators and/or stairs? My mother is in a wheel chair and wants to visit. I am on the 3rd floor building H.

Basically all of the apartments include a stove+oven, fridge, and microwave. That's it. Some floor plans ("with added upgrades" and "luxury") also include a dishwasher. The apartments supply you with recycling bin but no trashcan. There aren't shelves in the patio storage area. I don't believe we're allowed to bbq on the patio, but the courtyards in each building have charcoal grills and the clubhouse has gas grills. Unfortunately, all of the apartments are stairway-only. If you contacted Jose and explained the situation, you MIGHT be able to get him to consider switching you to the same floor plan on the first floor.

You can apply next year but word on the street is that preference is given to incoming MS1's. Also, it would appear that the practice requirements differ from state to state. My agreement with the state of Arizona is that I'll work here in this state one year for every year they give me funding. It can be in any population and any specialty. That's what makes WICHE PSES so amazing.

Well I just heard back from WA and they currently don't have any funding for the WICHE program... BOO!! Yay huge loans!

Thanks for the info. I only added that last elevator question as an after thought! I guess everything does not have to be wheel chair accessible. That is a real bummer.

To the MS1's on here - I have an opportunity to continue to work where I'm currently employed for 5 hours a week every Saturday morning once I matriculate. Will I be able to handle this? What are your Saturday's like? As always, thanks.

I know for me, I spend the bulk of Saturday studying and some of my best studying is done then, while other people I know get ample studying done on Saturdays but still have the time to go out fairly-regularly. It all really depends on the person, how efficient they are at studying, and the week. Perhaps you could give it a trial run?

When are our immunization forms/other forms due? I'm reading the orientation paper and it says to bring the forms to orientation so I'm assuming that is when they're due. Someone correct me if I'm horribly mistaken.

There's some fudge-room as for when they're due, but if you want to make your life easier you should get them done soon, make copies, and mail it all to the school by mid-summer so that you don't have to deal with anything like that during orientation.

Hey, Did anyone else just get interview this week? They opened up interviews for this week & said they still have spots available :]

I interviewed last week. They do still have spots open.

How long does it usually take to hear back from AZCOM after an interview? The admissions lady said the admissions committee would meet today.

It depends. Some people have heard back a day after interviewing and some have had to wait two weeks. I would assume if they told you they are meeting today you would hear back by Friday. You can check your status by checking your online portal. If you see an accepted student checklist, you are IN! You can always call admissions and ask for a status update.

Do any of you who interviewed last Friday and this week see any changes in your portal yet? Could you post if you do? Thanks! I'm so nervous :>

I interviewed on Friday. I have checked the portal a few times today since I heard admissions would meet today. Nothing has shown up on mine.

I interviewed on Monday and we were told Wednesday evening or Thursday the portals could be updated since they planned to meet Wednesday to decide on 4/29 and 5/2 interviewees. Nothing yet either but I'll be checking it constantly!

I have nothing of worth to contribute to the current discussion, except goog luck with your interviews! Also, a reminder to those of you who have been recently accepted: Join the AZCOM 2015 group!

Facebook has made some changes to make it more difficult to use, but we still have a getting to know you section. Check it out and tell us about yourselves. Also, I think with the new rules, you have to be approved as a member, but we are pretty quick to add you in once you've requested it. 🙂

I'm curious - did anyone who interviewed send a thank you note after their interview? I didn't even think about that until now, but now I'm wondering if I should or how schools normally look at that sort of thing.

thank you notes, not necessary, you can if you really want to but has no impact on decision

I sent thank you emails, but that's about it. I have no idea if they even received them..

I sent a Thank you note/Letter of Intent two days after I interviewed and was accepted the next day.

Who did you sent your letter to? Dr. Speicher?

I called admissions and asked who I could send them to after the interview. They said to put ATTN: Dr. X in the subject line and send it to admissions and they would forward it away. I don't know how much it helped at all. People got accepted before I did.

I just sent thank you letters because I thought it was courteous. These people take time out of their busy schedules to interview us; especially the student interviewers.

I sponsor a lot of kids for sports teams and its nice to get the odd thank you.

I called admissions today and was told that they will be meeting on Monday to make decisions and the portal should be updated by Tuesday evening. I believe Monday is the last interview day. They probably want to get everyone in the same pool before deciding.

I interviewed Thursday and they said there were still 20 spots available. They also said that acceptances ONLY will be posted on Tuesday. If you are an alternate or rejected you will have to wait for a physical letter, but I bet you could just call.

Has anyone been able to find board score stats that compare schools? The graphs from that powerpoint were great, but I can't seem to find anything online.

i sent a thank you note to each interviewer with the same basic template plus a little sentence about something i discussed with each specific person and one to the admissions office in general thanking them for a well-organized day etc.

even if it made no difference (i was accepted a week later), i think that professional courtesy is especially important in the field of medicine so it's good to get used to that now already 👍

I am in need of some education regarding student loans: I just got a letter stating that my Direct Plus Loan was approved for somewhere around $32,000, which sounds like a lot of money, but really isn't compared to the amount we need. Just to be sure, the Direct Plus and the Grad Plus loans are two different loans right? (i.e. the Grad Plus will cover the difference). Otherwise it's gonna be a rough year with only 32K in loans to cover 82K in expenses (according the the new COA... http://www.midwestern.edu/Documents/Financial Aid documents/MEDICAL COA_AZ1112.pdf).

Also, just wanted to wish good luck to those still interviewing, or waiting to hear from the school... I still get anxiety thinking about the interview/waiting period. It's not a fun time. But once you're past it, it is awesome. 🙂

They're the same.

Check here:

Anyway, I pulled up my note, and this is what I have in term of loans (to cover CoA):

6000 - Perkins - 5%
8500 - SUB Stafford - 6.8%
34222 - UNSUB Stafford 6.8%
~30K+ - Graduate PLUS 7.9%

:wow::wow::wow::wow::wow::wow::wow::wow::wow:

Random question to current med. student, do you see anyone in class using Cardiology III Stethoscope (Black Edition)?

That makes sense. Assuming I get the same amounts for the stafford and perkins loans, then it all adds up and I feel much better.

Thanks!

Edit: On the online portal under Financial Services, the "Award Letter" option tells you what you're eligible for. Wish I had seen this earlier. Thought I'd let everyone else know who may have been as lost as I was.

Perkins isn't a standard thing most people get; you'll get the same amount in Stafford but your GradPlus will be higher by the amount listed for the Perkins unless you happen to qualify for the Perkins.

Lots of people use the cardiology III, including myself. I'm not sure about the colors, don't pay that much attention.

Go big or go home. :smack:

Seriously though, I wouldn't spend $800 on a stethoscope unless it gave me some strategic advantage on the exams. I am wondering what the difference really is between a $50 and a $150 stethoscope... is it actually worth the extra money?

Don't ever...ever get electronic one. 😛 Trust me.

Anyway, here is a 2008 research on the acoustic stethoscope:

A side note: They didn't test out the Harvey DLX which is "supposedly" better than Cardio III.

I see. When did you Award Letter show up on your online portal? I haven't received mine yet, but I only completed all my "document checklist" in March.

So... I'm sort of embarrassed to ask this, but is the Accepted Student Checklist always in the Portal or does that mean I'm an accepted student? I don't remember if it was there before today.

I haven't received my award letter yet and was wondering when you completed your financial aid stuff -I thought we wouldn't be receiving our awards until June sometime.

i think the two links "Matrilculation/Payment" and "Accepted Student Checklist" are always there under the posta-ccepted category. The only difference for accepted students and other applicants is when you click on the "Accepted Student Checklist". If you have been accepted, it would *not* say "Checklist is available to accepted applicants".

DorothyMantooth, what did yours say?

My portal has changed!!! Accepted student checklist is updated to include "required documents", etc.

Reading the last few posts... looks like I'm in:banana:

It changed sometime between 4 and 5:30 pm today. Oh, and I interviewed last Tuesday - crazy week!

Congrats! Welcome to the desert.

They said they were planning on updating them today so don't worry if you didn't get anything yesterday.

Yeah, mine has the checklist with checks and red X's (apparently they don't think I have a bachelor's degree. lol). And it has some forms to fill out.
