Hi

So exciting that you're applying to vet school! Did you know you can apply to the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph through VMCAS as well? We're fully AVMA accredited and have students from all over the US in our classes. Chances are our alumni teach at the vet school you're applying to!

We're a 90 minute drive from Buffalo NY and an hour from Toronto, so not too far! And it's our 150th anniversary this year!

You don't have to finish your degree first to apply here, just 2 years of university.

If your're interested you can still apply for THIS FALL entry, and start on your journey to becoming a vet sooner.

And it is something you can definitely support to adcoms when they ask. The high school and up thing has more to do with rewards I would say in general. Obviously everyone shouldn't be putting thousands of hours for owning turtles since they were little, but working on a chicken farm (and actually doing the work) I think should count toward something. Like I said, being able to support your claim to adcoms is what matters IMO. That experience shaped you. Definitely worth noting with a "low abitrary number" 👍

Yeah, as a kid it sucked pretty bad to have to move to the suburbs after growing up in wide open spaces, but that's the way the cookie crumbles sometimes. It gives me a whole new perspective on food animal med, so for that, I am thankful.🙂
 
I'm in a pickle and I need someone's opinion. Stupid me, narrowed down my schools without looking at ALL of the pre-reqs. While I fulfill most school requirements I am just missing a few classes. Michigan require Nutrition and Western U requires Psychology and Speech. My question is...is it worth it to pay to take these classes post bacc or should I just change the schools I am applying to? I have some other possible options as replacements (VMRVM and Missouri)..but I really don't want to budge on Michigan.

That is totally up to you. I personally don't think there is anything wrong with taking classes post grad. But you have to decide if it is worth it to get into certain schools.
 
Remember, you are going to be at/stuck at said school for FOUR years!!!! If you do NOT see yourself realistically going there, do NOT apply! 🙂

I took three classes between applying and starting this August... nothing wrong with it at all. As long as Michigan knows you are taking nutrition (one of the classes I'm taking now actually) it shouldn't be a problem. It's not something I would change schools over, personally.

Check with each school though, they each require different (but usually very similar) requirements of how many classes you need completed to apply. But its usually like 3 classes can be missing at the time of app, so I'm sure you're fine with Michigan

Also check when they need to be completed by...I ended up not applying to at least one school because the animal nutrition course they required wouldn't count if I took it the summer before I enrolled.
 
Yeah I checked that. I was wondering if they would accept community college credit? It would just be cheaper for me to take classes at a community college. Going back to my university post bacc for 9 credit hours is $3,000 D: ....

From what I read, as long as it comes from an accredited college or university then its fine. ?

Yeah, I graduated May this year.
 
Definitely see how your application compares to past applicant stats for the schools you want to apply to before you register and pay for the extra classes! I applied to michigan last cycle without taking a cell bio course thinking that I would take it online if necessary. However, I didn't have to worry about it as Michigan seems to prefer high GPAs and mine was less than stellar (like a 3.42 when I applied last cycle). In hindsight, I should have looked at this before and not even applied, but that is one failure among many last cycle. I was also OOS and had very little experience so that contributes to the denial as well.

I don't know your stats, but my advice is to look at your chances before applying to schools that require extra courses. That's something I wish someone would have told naive last year me 🙂

Just be careful. Some schools will not take community college credit and some will. Some will accept it for some courses and not others. You might wanna call up the schools themselves and ask. I would hate for you to enroll and pay for extra classes and then find out later that the vet school won't accept it.

When I was in undergrad, my advisor told me not to take any vet school science prerequisite at a community college. I don't know if it's true or not, but I followed his advice to be on the safe side.

I had been told this as well and was looking to take a course for Cornell at a community college. They said it was okay as long as the majority of my courses weren't done at one. Turns out, the course was a nursing students micro class so it wouldn't have counted anyways.

Whenever in doubt, call the individual school.

This.👍 So true and definitely one of the best pieces of advice for those who are applying this year. It never hurts to call them up and ask.
 
Does anybody know of a good online Genetics class? If so, where? I'm registered for it in a traditional classroom for the fall, but I may be moving and it's be nice to have an alternative that I can use no matter where I'm living this fall.
 
I just called one of my LOR writers and confirmed that he'll write for me and got his email so they can send the eLOR request! :clap:

...It feels like such an accomplishment, but really it's small, and I still have up to 5 more to do...

I know how you feel! I sent two of mine last week, feels pretty good! still have one more to do, but I'm not sure how to contact her because she changed her phone # and never answers emails... my goal for this week is to figure that out lol

I was calling one at around midnight last time. She didn't answer because she was working on it and knew I was sweating bullets.

This is for the application that is due in like three months, right?

I was starting to feel on top of things because I had all my experiences entered (not descriptions or anything yet, but just names and dates), but, never mind. I've only talked to one recommender and haven't formally requested anyone yet.

In other words, I'm jealous!

eLOR progress:

-called 3 to confirm that they'd write for me, then formally requested them
-waiting for the end of the summer for the experience I'm doing now
-waiting on an email from Penn to see whether one of my letters will fill their requirement
-haven't decided whether I'll go for a sixth

Yay progress! I feel so accomplished!
 
Yeah I had a recommender who sent it like TWO hrs before the deadline and she was on "medication'

However, the interviewers hinted it was really good, but I swear I lost 5 years of my life that day.
 
If any of my eLORS wait until the last minute I think I'm going to die. I'm kind of pissed at myself now though. I was going to apply to Tufts, which requires two letters from professors, but now I'm not going to. So I had asked one of my professors to write one who doesn't know me super well, but I did really well in her class and talked to her about vet school a couple times. I'm supposed to work in her lab in the fall too which is good. But I'm nervous it's not going to be a super outstanding LOR and now I don't really need it anyways.

I graduated in December 2010. I emailed two professors three weeks ago asking both to write a recommendation (one of them wrote one last year). I got no response from either of them. Sent them asking again, because maybe they were just too busy. I am doubting I will get a reply. Even if it is no, I just want it confirmed. I already have three people, but I want one of them as my academic.
