C/O 2017 Applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just wrote this on the LSU thread, but I want to share with the whole class.

Time seems to drag on after you submit your app, and you stalk your mailman, and your email server hates you for refreshing 12 million times in a day, and any post on SDN sends your nerves out your eyeballs, and an hour feels like a week. You get the interview emails, you spend lots of money, lose lots of sleep, eat way too much chocolate, and bumble through your interview.... more waiting, more SDN breakdowns. Then you get accepted (and you will 😉) and the next thing you know, you are begging for time to slow down to get all your paperwork done, move, take a mini vaca, etc.

I know it is insanely easier said than done, but try try try to enjoy the process and look at it as a progression toward your dreams. Because the next thing you know, you are looking back at an entire year of your life gone by, full of stress, and tears, and breakdowns, and happiness, and dreams coming true. ENJOY YOUR DREAM COMING TRUE, even if the road to it is BRUTAL! I sincerely hope you all get to experience your dream coming true this year, or at least get a better understanding of the process to improve and pursue it again next year. Have faith in the process and don't let other people's statistics stress you out. You are a whole package, not just a statistic, and sometimes the right school finds you, sometimes you find the right school. Sometimes, it is a huge load of crap, none of it makes sense, and you feel like a worthless pile of dung... be prepared for that too! 🙄

I am rooting for y'all SOOO hard! :luck::xf::luck::xf::luck:

^^^Except I JUST went through this. Sigh. Turning around and doing it again sucks!!!! 😳

I know 🙁. I am rooting extra for those of you who are doing this for a second, third, or fourth time. And Abney, I don't remember your stats, but I just have a really great feeling about you this year. SDN is gonna EXPLODE the day you get in!! 😀

Just curious: How many schools are everyone applying to? At the moment I'm planning on 6.
Edit: Is that even grammatically correct? Oh god, I'm having an I don't know how to speak english moment...

apply to NCSU 😍😍

(slightly biased)

I applied to 11 last year :scared::scared: waay overkill, but honestly you never know what to expect. I would get rejected from low ranked schools, accepted by high ranked, rejected by high rank, accepted by middle of the road schools. Sooo don't necessarily base it off of rankings! GOOD LUCK 2017ers!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would totally apply to NCSU, but I can't take nutrition in time. Nutrition and genetics are held at the same time in the spring, and I can't take genetics in the fall 🙁

Seriously! When you get into Wazzu I'm going to drive to AZ and give you a hug!

Take it online?

Take it online?

Yeah, that was my only other thought except that would be the only school I'd have to take it for and they don't let you take classes the summer before. So I would hate to take it while I was waiting to hear back and then not get in and have wasted the money.

Applying to 5. Same number I applied to for undergrad, actually.

I didn't know you applied to 11?!?!?

Seriously guys, don't do that. I applied to 11 also. I could be using that money to buy a couch 😀

And just bc you see a ton of people get accepted on a certain day on SDN does not mean you won't be accepted the next day. Don't cry at the gas station and try to pass it off about rising fuel costs.

But I swear I was the only one on here accepted the next day

bahahaha I second the don't apply to that many... 12 here... biggest waste of money EVER! I could be ROLLING in dough right now and I'm flat broke.... spent damn near $4K on the process btwn interviews, app fees, GRE scores, transcripts, etc. 😱

I'm applying to 4 for sure, but I may possibly apply to one or two more.

Someone last year started bawling because they couldn't find a stapler! 🙄

I remember I got really mad at the cal state for not sending in my transcripts twice. I believe Fromthebox offered her services to go ahead and beat them up.

I stalked those people and had their direct line and everything!! :meanie:

 I've narrowed it down to... 11. The plan is to shoot for only 10, but I just don't know what else I should eliminate and on what grounds. I'll take any advice possible! I gave my stats in the "What are my chances" thread, but I'll do a little recap and if anyone can give me advice, hugs all around!

Second time applicant. The first time, I had a worse GPA, a C- in Orgo2, and a 480 V/ 720 Q/ 4.5 W GRE as the new one wasn't accepted by some of the schools I applied to. I applied to 6 schools and was rejected from all of them except KSU where I am waitlisted... blah
My IS is Illinois. I plan to do wildlife med, but I'll take what I can get.

GPA: 3.48/3.51 depending on averaging/substituting the one course retake I have (Orgo 2..yuck)
GRE: 158 V/ 158 Q/ 5 W Which are 79th percentiles for V+Q and an 80-something for writing
~600 hours just vet experience
~600 hours research experience
Lots of hours in animal (too lazy to add) both internationally and domestic.

What I'm looking at:

Illinois- In state. Wildlife Clinic 😍 Desperately want to get out of this state though.
Auburn- Raptor center. Everything I've seen about Auburn is gorgeous.
Edinburgh- Accepts a lot of international students. I've never been to europe so this would be a nice little international fling before I become too workaholic to travel.
Florida- International Vet Med certification. Zoo and wildlife med courses. And it's Florida so I'm willing to take a gamble here.
Iowa- Wasn't really sure about Iowa until I realized they had a wildlife clinic. That kind of sealed the deal.
Kansas- Strong exotics program. Everyone was so nice and caring during the open house/ interview. The only school that gave me the time of day so I'm definitely reapplying.
Missouri- A lot of OOS applicants. Closer to family.IS tuition possible after 1st year. But, little to no exotics except for the usual clinic rotations elsewhere.
Tennessee- Supplemental app is pretty cheap. They have a much higher OOS GPA than I do (3.72) but a lower GRE score (like 1100 something whereas mine is ~1340) so hopefully that will help. Might as well. Area is nice too.
Tufts- Wildlife. Wildlife. Wildlife. And no VMCAS fee? Worth the effort. Not sure if I'll get considered for anything, but I'll give it a try.
Virginia/Maryland- They like students with research backgrounds and are now accepting 40 OOS students.
Washington- I'm considered a 1st tier applicant here. I've heard great things about WSU.

If you can't tell, I'm casting a wide net this year to maximize my chances. I really don't want to do this again and hopefully won't have to. I have all the prereq's for these schools and would be okay with living/attending any of these. Basically, I'll go anywhere.

Okay.. Time to go make money to pay for these applications...

omg, this is sooo me. One time, I completely broke down because I couldn't get something to fit into the freezer... lol one of those days I guess! This application cycle will be interesting. I'm interested to see how I will react to it all.

I'm sure about 3 school I'm applying to, considering 3 more. My original # was five, but one of my LOR writers told me about another school that I'm interested in now. It's a work in progress. I don't think I will know exactly where I'm applying to until I finally submit everything!

Hey, if you have your reasons to apply at each school, by all means, go for it! :luck::xf::luck:

If y'all have time for this stuff, yer not busy enough. Quit thinking about vet school and do something fun and/or worthwhile. I was taken by surprise when my results showed up.

Sometimes, it is a huge load of crap, none of it makes sense, and you feel like a worthless pile of dung... be prepared for that too! 🙄

That only gets worse once you start vet school and you become acutely aware that the process is mostly designed to create hoops for you to jump through (good dog! good dog!).

... and that's coming from someone who mostly LIKES vet school. 🙂

Emiloo is a great cheerleader. I'm a great grump. 🙂

Alright, I think I've decided where I am applying this cycle. Here goes:
  1. University of Georgia
  2. Auburn
  3. St. George's University
  4. Mississippi State
  5. VMRCVM
  6. Oklahoma
  7. Ross
  8. Royal Veterinary College
  9. Colorado
  10. Florida
  11. Tennessee

Let's Do This.

If you do it online (not saying next summer), but what about taking it during the semester? OK State and NCSU are both schools I know that offer it online. Yeah it would be an extra class to take, but you could do it! If NCSU really isn't one of your top choices though, I would say not to do it. It's a lot of extra money to burn for just one extra school.

Chyyaaaa....I don't know what I was thinking. It was 14 at the time of the "are you sure you would like to submit your application?" page. Panicked. Took three off. Sooo long euro dream. Ah well.

I tried to add some realistic grump in at the end 😉. And he's right about not thinking about it. That's why I said to try and enjoy the journey as it goes along, don't be all stuck on staring at emails. It doesn't make them show up faster... promise! 😀

Are you OOS at UGA? It's really hard to get in like that here and might end up being a waste of money. Unless you're super competitive or have awesome reason to try. Don't want to be discouraging you!

I second this. And again it is NOT to be discouraging, but they literally accept 1 or 2 people OOS. Not sure about this past year's stats, but the year before, they accepted one OOSer and it was a Puerto Rican citizen. If it is your dream school and somewhere you really want to go, then by all means go for it! But if you are "casting a wide net" to have better chances, UGA is a huge waste of money.

UGA is my IS.

Well if you get into UGA, we should totally hang out!

Good luck! I'm always excited when people apply here. I feel so alone on SDN.

Sounds good! You live near Athens, I guess?

In Athens now permanently. I just moved into my new house a few days ago. 🙂

If you need to look for housing, talk to me at that time 😉

The best thing about keeping (really) busy - especially if it's vet-related busy - is that if you don't get in, you've been improving your application the entire time. So if - hopefully not, but if - you get the rejection in Feb or whenever, and the application is due again a half year later .... you can take a deep breath and pat yourself on the back for having foresight and being ahead of the game.

And if you DO get in ... you've spent that time building connections so you can get a summer job, do an externship, have someone to tip you off to opportunities, speak on your behalf, whatever.

Keeping busy is a no-lose proposition. The fact that it helps keep you from depressive preoccupation with your app status is just icing on the cake. 🙂

Haha, seriously. I didn't realize that they accepted like 0 OOS people when I applied to them my first cycle. Figured it was a good school to apply to because my uncle and aunt live outside Atlanta. Somehow got wait listed there. Blew my mind. Haha. Can't imagine how it would have been if I got accepted.

Awesome. That's what it would have been! Duh.

Arggggg. Just realizing how little 5,000 characters is.

I have maybe a quarter written of my personal statement (if you count the paragraph I have and the sentence-based outline of the rest) and it's over 2,000 characters.

So frustrating!

Just going to try to finish it and then see where it is, but I know I will be cutting a lot out.

When I first started writing mine I wrote 2 paragraphs (which ended up being nothing more than an overly wordy introduction)...and, yeah...it was well over 2000 characters. 😱 It was quite the slap in the face haha. I think writing and then going back and cutting out/rewording is a good method. Good luck!

I basically wrote what I wanted and then I went back and condensed each thought. It wasn't easy though. Good luck 🙂
Mine was 5000 characters exactly
And there wasn't a single other one I could have taken out. I almost had to leave the period of my last sentence off lol.

Mine was exactly 5000 characters last year. It is so hard condensing everything.

When I first applied, I didn't read it correctly and thought it said 5000 words, not characters. Imagine my shock when my advisor looked over my PS and said it was too long. 😱 I'm just glad she corrected it before I submitted it...:scared: that was a lot of correcting and cutting out...
